MOT to set up special task force to probe FRU truck crash
PUTRAJAYA: The Transport Ministry (MoT) will set up a special task force to investigate the fatal accident involving Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Teluk Intan today. Its minister, Anthony Loke, said the task force will comprise experts and independent members who will examine the incident and recommend safety improvements. 'The task force will be set up very soon,' he told a press conference after chairing the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion (JK-MKKJR) here today. Nine FRU personnel from the Unit 5 base in Ipoh were killed in the crash, which occurred at 8.50 am along Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam while the convoy was returning from duty in conjunction with the Chitirai Pournami celebration. Eight victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital.

Govt panel agrees to funding mechanism for road safety initiatives
PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion (JK-MKKJR) has agreed in principle to establish a funding mechanism for road safety initiatives, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today. He said the proposed mechanism involves allocating 50 per cent of revenue collected from the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) summonses to the Transport Ministry (MOT) for implementing targeted safety programmes. 'Among them are improving highway lighting in accident-prone hotspots, and this will be implemented immediately. 'We hope to have a more sustainable source of revenue to support mitigation efforts aimed at reducing road accident risks,' he told a press conference after chairing the committee meeting here. Loke also said road safety along the East-West Highway (JRTB) between Gerik and Jeli will be enhanced, particularly concerning wildlife crossings, following a recent heartbreaking incident involving a mother elephant seen refusing to leave her calf's side after it was killed in a collision with a lorry in the area. 'Among others, we will look into improving lighting in that stretch and introducing wildlife crossings as part of broader safety upgrades,' he said. He said wildlife protection will also be a key consideration in railway infrastructure projects. 'This will be addressed along the Gemas–Johor Bahru rail line, especially since there have been past incidents of elephants crossing railway tracks. 'This is something we take seriously, not only to protect wildlife but also human lives. Railway lines pose significant risks if high-speed trains collide with large animals such as elephants, and the consequences can be severe,' he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry suffered a malfunction that caused its steering system to fail, a situation that would not have occurred if the vehicle had been regularly inspected. 'This should not have happened if the vehicle had undergone a Puspakom inspection. We should not only place the responsibility on the lorry driver, but the company owner must also be held accountable,' he said. Ahmad Zahid was speaking at a press conference after chairing the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion (JK-MKKJR) here today. At 8.50 am today, nine FRU personnel were killed and others injured after the truck they were travelling in collided with a lorry carrying stones on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said the government would immediately install street lights along several highway stretches identified as fatal accident blackspots. He said the matter was agreed upon at today's Cabinet Committee Meeting on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion (JK-MKKJR). In addition, he said the committee also agreed that drastic measures should be taken to reduce traffic congestion in Malaysia caused by the high number of vehicles. 'The fact we are facing is that Malaysia has 34.1 million residents but 38.7 million vehicles… this means the number of vehicles exceeds the number of residents, and this may have contributed to road congestion and road accidents,' he said. Ahmad Zahid said among the measures to be taken was the addition of dedicated bus lanes in the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru.
