Jordan: Deir Alla records highest temperature in Jordan amid heatwave at 46.2°C

AMMAN — Deir Alla station recorded on Monday the highest temperature in the Kingdom at 46.2°C, followed by Al Baqoura at 45.8°C, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD). Southern Al Azraq recorded 44.5°C, followed by Wadi Al Rayyan, Zarqa, and Al Jafr at 44°C, then Aqaba at 43.9°C, the JMD said as reported by Al Mamlaka TV. Wadi Al Dhuleil recorded 43.4°C, Al Safawi 43°C, and Queen Alia International Airport 42.5°C. Meanwhile, Spokesperson for the Jordan Electric Power Company Mohammed Maharmeh stressed that enhancing the company's readiness does not eliminate the possibility of power outages due to increased loads during the current heatwave. He noted that the company's teams work to respond 'swiftly and address malfunctions as soon as they occur,' Al Mamlaka TV added. Maharmeh added that the heatwave has increased electricity loads due to rising demand and consumption, noting that outage management over the past few days was handled 'smoothly', ensuring the quickest possible restoration of power. The average repair and restoration time was only one hour, according to Maharmeh. The spokesperson pointed out that power outages under these conditions are normal due to the sharp rise in temperatures and high consumption, stressing the importance of rationalising consumption by citizens. Maharmeh urged electric vehicle owners to charge their cars after midnight to reduce pressure on the grid during peak hours. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Kingdom braces for extended heatwave, relief expected by Thursday

AMMAN — The Kingdom remains gripped by a searing heatwave that is expected to continue through Thursday, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) announced on Monday. According to the department, weather conditions will remain hot across the highlands and extremely hot in most other regions, with dusty skies prevailing, particularly in the eastern and southern parts of the country. By midday Monday, the Kingdom is expected to witness a state of atmospheric instability, bringing chances of scattered rainfall in several areas. Some showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms, with the potential for heavy downpours over short periods, especially in the southern and eastern regions. Winds will range from moderate northwesterly to northeasterly, occasionally picking up speed, especially in desert areas, causing dusty conditions and reduced visibility. The JMD has urged the public to take necessary precautions, including avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, exercising caution on slippery roads during rainfall, and staying alert for potential flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, particularly in the south and east. Similar weather conditions are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, with high temperatures persisting and continued chances of atmospheric instability in the afternoon hours. Scattered showers, possibly accompanied by thunder, are expected to return, particularly in the southern and eastern regions. A slight drop in temperatures is expected on Thursday. However, the weather will remain hot in mountainous areas and extremely hot elsewhere. High-altitude clouds are likely to appear, with moderate northwesterly winds picking up occasionally in the eastern parts of the Kingdom, the department said.

Heatwave grips Kingdom through Tuesday, public urged to take precautions

AMMAN — A severe heatwave continues to sweep across the Kingdom, with scorching temperatures expected to persist through Tuesday, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD). JMD has issued several public safety warnings, urging residents to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and to stay hydrated. It also cautioned against reduced visibility due to dust in desert areas during evening and nighttime hours. (See story on page 2) The heatwave is expected to continue on Sunday and Monday, with hot conditions forecast over high mountainous areas and extremely hot weather elsewhere. There is a slight chance of brief, light, and scattered afternoon showers in parts of the south and east. Winds will remain moderate to active from the northeast to northwest, stirring dust in desert regions. By Tuesday, the weather will remain hot across most of the Kingdom and extremely hot in the Badia region, the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Clouds at medium and high altitudes are expected to persist, with moderate to active winds in desert regions, according to JMD. The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) said that the load on the national grid on Saturday reached 3,900 megawatts. NEPCO director general Sufian Bataineh said that the company is raising its readiness to handle electrical loads during the heatwave, the Jordan news agency, Petra, reported. He said that the Kingdom's electrical system, both in the transmission and generation networks, has increased its readiness to meet electricity demand, adding that the company has completed its regular and preventive maintenance programs, supported by 'sufficient' generation capacity to absorb the loads resulting from the rising temperatures.
