Chinese EV brand JMEV officially launches in Singapore with the Elight sedan, Lifestyle News

Another day, another new Chinese car, and the latest to arrive on our shores is JMEV, an EV brand that is targeted at budget-conscious consumers. JMEV joins the growing contingent of Chinese brands that have been launched in Singapore over the past couple of years, and they are now the 16th Chinese passenger car brand go for sale here. The brand was actually previewed at The Car Expo earlier in May, but it was officially launched by its local authorised distributor, Valor Auto, at an event held at its new showroom at 237/241 Telok Kurau Road on July 29. The first model that JMEV is offering here is the Elight (pronounced 'e-light'), an electric sedan that is similar in size to mainstream family sedans like the Toyota Corolla Altis and Honda Civic, and is an indication of the type of target market that it is aiming at. The Elight comfortably sits in COE Category A, with its electric drivetrain that produces 145hp and 225Nm of torque. While the performance is modest, with a 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 150km/h, JMEV says that the Elight can deliver a range of up to 600km with its 65kWh battery fully charged. The design of the car bears a sleek and contemporary style, with a sloping roofline that gives it an almost coupe-like profile, and the slim LED headlights which further accentuate its sense of sportiness. The interior features a simple and fairly traditional setup, with a large 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen complemented by physical buttons on the centre console, the latter being a relatively rarity in newer Chinese cars these days. It does come with a host of modern features though, including driver assistance systems like automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera. There are also nice and fancy stuff like a wireless smartphone charger and a panoramic sunroof available as standard. As of now, there is only one variant of the JMEV Elight available, and Valor Auto is retailing it at a launch price of $156,888 with COE. The brand also announced that it intends to introduce more JMEV models to Singapore in the coming months, including at least one SUV, although it did not reveal any further details.
