Babulal sheds crocodile tears for tribal land owners, says JMM

Ranchi: JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya on Sunday accused the leader of the opposition and state BJP president Babulal Marandi of shedding crocodile tears for tribal raiyyats (landowners), who are opposing land acquisition for second campus of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (Rims) in Nagri area under the Kanke block. Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Bhattacharya said during Marandi's tenure as chief minister, police firing incidents took place during which people protesting against land acquisitions for projects in Tapkara in Khunti and Neterhaat in Latehar were fired upon. Marandi should apologise for the incidents, the JMM leader said. Notably, Marandi visited Nagri on Saturday and met people, who were opposing Rims-2 in their area. Marandi alleged that the state govt wanted to displace tribals from their agricultural land but he would not allow the acquisition of even an inch without approval of the gram sabha in the villages. Reacting to Marandi's visit and statement, Bhattacharya said so far, the state govt has not issued any notification regarding the place where the new hospital would be built and according to the plan, the new hospital should come up along the ring road. He also claimed that Marandi is raising the issues to serve the interest of one Sunil Sahu. "Details will be provided later on," the JMM leader said. Bhattacharya also said Marandi as the first CM of Jharkhand, adopted the Bihar rules for administering the state which was against the vision of separate Jharkhand for preventing exploitation and protection of tribal identity and rights. He also said during that period, the opposition had demanded the framing of the state's own rules for protecting the tribal land, but Marandi ignored it. "There is a provision in the Land Acquisition and Reform Act 2013 which states that any acquired land not used for five years should be returned to the raiyyats. Marandi must request the BJP-led central govt to return the surplus land of Steel Authority of India Limited, Coal India Limited and Heavy Engineering Corporation in the state," Bhattacharya said. He also took potshots at Marandi saying that when BJP national president and Union health minister J P Nadda called the state's health minister Irfan Ansari for discussions on improving the health facilities in Jharkhand, the state BJP president felt bad about it as he was ignored.

JMM, Cong demand greater support from fin panel, BJP seeks more transparency

1 2 Ranchi: The key ruling coalition partners in the state on Friday appealed to the 11-member 16th Finance Commission team to ensure equitable distribution of resources and curb disparities. The team has wrapped up its four-day tour of Jharkhand and will leave on Saturday morning. During their meeting here, JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey and state urban development minister Sudivya Kumar sought "justice" for Jharkhand from the commission through proper financial support and resource allocation. Pandey said, "More than the grants, it is our right to get proper support and we have made submitted the details to the commission, hoping that they won't disappoint the people of this state." JMM has pointed out to the commission that most tax collection is done by the Union govt, benefiting larger and more developed states. "Smaller, resource-based states like Jharkhand do not receive an adequate share of the taxes. We have demanded that the share of backward states in tax distribution be increased so they can play an effective role in the country's overall development," Pandey said. He added, "We have also asked for special assistance under disaster management to stabilise agriculture and the rural economy affected by climate change. JMM's ally Congress also made several demands on similar lines. Former finance minister Rameshwar Oraon said the state's share in central taxes (the divisible pool) should be increased to 50%. A Congress statement said, "More emphasis should be placed on the income gap (the difference between the per capita income of wealthy states and Jharkhand's per capita income). Since states with more forests face a cost disadvantage in development efforts, there should be more devolution of funds to tide over the financial loss. Moreover, the inclusion of performance indicators in the fund devolution will increase economic disparity among the states. Therefore, we requested that this criterion be dropped, or at least the weight for demographic performance should be reduced to zero." Both BJP and Ajsu-P, part of NDA, on the other hand, accused the state govt of financial mismanagement and diversion of funds. They appealed to the commission to ensure transparent accounting of central grants. "The state govt is not serious about development due to financial mismanagement and corruption over the past five to six years. The state is facing several structural, social and economic challenges, for which special attention from the finance commission is requested. Jharkhand should receive a fair share of the revenue from mining projects. There is a need to implement the PESA Act and conduct municipal elections," Ajsu-P's Praveen Prabhakar said. BJP further said despite the court's directives Jharkhand couldn't conduct municipal body polls for the last two years and demanded more checks, including funding for 'One Nation, One Election', while deciding on the devolution.

Hemant Soren government should take steps to stop conversion if they are concerned about tribals: LoP Marandi

RANCHI: Amid the ongoing protest by the JMM and Congress demanding a Sarna Religion Code, Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi said that if these parties are truly concerned, they should take concrete steps to stop the conversion of tribals to Christianity. According to Marandi, if all tribals who believe in Marang Buru or worship nature are converted to Christianity, then who will write 'Sarna' in the separate column of the census form. Notably, tribal leaders across Jharkhand have been demanding the implementation of a Sarna Code in census surveys to identify tribals as followers of the Sarna faith. Marandi said religious conversion has become a major challenge in Jharkhand, which is why the previous Raghuvar Das-led BJP government had brought in a bill to curb it. Addressing the media at the BJP headquarters in Ranchi, Marandi cited the 2011 caste census, claiming that 15.48% of the tribal population in Jharkhand had converted to Christianity. He added that nearly 26% of Oraon, around 33% of Munda, over 67% of Kharia, more than 2% of Ho, and about 1% of Santhal populations had adopted Christianity. 'Why doesn't the government explain how lakhs of tribals who traditionally followed the Sarna religion have now been converted to Christianity?' he asked. Marandi said that in 2011, Jharkhand's total population was 3.29 crore, of which 86.45 lakh (26.2%) were tribals. 'Out of these, nearly 14 lakh (around 15%) identified themselves as Christians. The question is, how did so many tribals shift from their original Sarna faith to Christianity, and why is this trend continuing?" he said. He added that the upcoming caste census would reveal the actual figures of tribal conversion, and warned, 'When all tribals will become Christians, then where will Sarna survive?'

"If such acts happen again, will not listen to anyone and retaliate accordingly": All-party delegation member Sarfaraz Ahmad

Panama City [Panama], May 28 (ANI): JMM MP Sarfaraz Ahmad, who is part of the all-party delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, issued a strong warning on Wednesday (local time), asserting that India would not hesitate to respond decisively to terrorist attacks like the April 22 Pahalgam incident, declaring that the country 'will not listen to anyone' when it comes to defending its national security. Ahmad, while addressing the Indian Diaspora in Panama City, highlighted India's unified stance on national security, emphasising targeted anti-terrorism operations and the country's long-standing struggle against terrorism. 'When this Pahalgam attack took place, the government held two big meetings with leaders and delegations... Leaders of all political parties said that whatever steps the government wants to take to eliminate these things, we are all with them... As Shashi ji explained, we never killed civilians but only targeted specific places where terrorism was brewing... The government has sent these seven multi-party delegations to other countries to tell them that if such acts happen again, we will not listen to anyone and will retaliate accordingly,' the JMM MP stated. He further countered narratives of communal division, emphasising India's pluralistic identity while addressing the global context of terrorism, drawing parallels with the post-9/11 awakening in the US. 'Our country has been facing the problem of terrorists for years... After 9/11, America also found out what terrorism is... Small countries in this world have been facing these things for a long time... But I know this much: that after Indonesia, India has the highest Muslim population... Those people opted that even after the formation of Pakistan, they considered India as their country,' he added. Ahmad is part of the delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor that includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), G M Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar K Lata (BJP), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora. The delegation aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism while engaging with leaders in the United States, Guyana, Panama, Brazil, and Colombia.
