Federal Secretary for Sarawak, Dato Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan, said the primary focus of the programme is to ensure the safety of road users, particularly passengers of public transport services. He explained that the initiative includes comprehensive inspections of public buses, particularly those operating from the state's three major terminals in Kuching, Sibu and Miri. 'Technical inspections are conducted prior to departure to ensure each vehicle is fully prepared and in optimal condition,' he said during the launch of the programme at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal on Thursday. 'In addition, traffic offence records are reviewed, and preliminary urine screenings are carried out on drivers to prevent individuals under the influence of drugs from operating vehicles,' he added. Ahmad Nadzri said the approach reflects the department's commitment to safeguard road users, especially during festive and school holiday periods. 'To date, all public transport vehicles inspected have complied with the set regulations, and all 30 drivers tested for drugs returned negative results,' he reported. Meanwhile, JPJ Sarawak has also launched two special enforcement operations: Ops Gawai Dayak 2025, running from May 24 to 31, and Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha, scheduled from June 4 to 10. 'These operations aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of the travelling public,' he stated. Ahmad Nadzri also revealed that JPJ Sarawak has deployed plainclothes officers to selected locations. 'The presence of these officers is intended to monitor compliance with road laws more effectively. However, for security and operational integrity, the specific locations will not be disclosed publicly,' he said. He emphasised that JPJ Sarawak will not tolerate any traffic violations or negligence that endangers the safety of others. The integrated approach to advocacy and enforcement aligns with the government's aspiration to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2030. He further encouraged the public to play an active role in promoting road safety by reporting traffic offences, such as illegal U-turns at 'P' junctions, which are known accident hotspots. Reports can be submitted via the MyJPJ mobile application, the e-Aduan@JPJ portal, or by email to [email protected] . Also present at the advocacy programme were JPJ Sarawak Director Norizan Jili, Sarawak National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Director Abdul Hamadiee Ibrahim, and Sarawak Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP) Assistant Director Faizul Azri Suhaili. enforcement JPJ Sarawak lead public transport road safety

248 PPP certificates issued for express buses in Sarawak

KUCHING: A total of 248 express buses operating at three main terminals in Sarawak have been issued Certificates of Completion and Compliance (PPP) by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Sarawak JPJ Director Norizan Jili stated that this number is the result of a week-long Road Safety Advocacy and Enforcement program held in conjunction with the 2025 festive season, which concluded yesterday. She mentioned that PPP certificates are only issued to vehicles that pass safety inspections conducted by the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP). 'No compounds were issued following the physical inspections conducted on the vehicles,' she told reporters after observing enforcement operations at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal tonight. Besides Kuching, other main bus terminals in Sarawak are located in Sibu and Miri. Norizan emphasized that any bus without a PPP certificate is not allowed to operate and may face action, including vehicle detention and seizure. 'If any deficiencies are found, such as imperfect tyres, the owner must replace them first before the vehicle is permitted to operate,' she said adding that the special operation involved 105 JPJ Sarawak personnel as a measure to enhance passenger safety in conjunction with the Gawai Day and Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations. Meanwhile, an estimated 2,000 passengers use bus services daily through the Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal to various destinations across Sarawak approaching the festive season. Earlier, Sarawak Federal Secretary Datuk Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan also joined Norizan in observing the operation. The program was implemented in collaboration with JPJ Sarawak, LPKP Sarawak, and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sarawak.

S'wak expands Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme to Miri schools to tackle youth road safety crisis

Lee (seated, centre) highlights some points during the press conference. Joining him is JPJ Sarawak director Norizan Jili (seated, left). MIRI (May 17): The Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme (BLM) is being expanded to schools across Miri in an effort to reduce the high number of road accidents involving young motorcyclists. Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin announced the expansion during a recent press conference, stating that the initiative builds on the success of last year's Signature Programme held within the Senadin constituency. 'In 2024 alone, over 11,944 participants joined 14 BLM programmes held across various parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak. In Senadin specifically, 587 participants successfully obtained their licenses last year. This year, we are extending the programme to schools throughout Miri,' said the Senadin assemblyman. The BLM programme aims to make motorcycle licensing more affordable and to promote safer riding habits among students. According to Lee, many students already ride motorcycles to school but do so without a valid licence, which increases their risk of being involved in road accidents. 'This initiative provides them with a proper and legal pathway to become responsible road users,' he added. A total of 1,000 students across Miri are expected to benefit from the programme this year. Eligible participants will only need to pay a minimum of RM250 to obtain their B2 motorcycle licence. Lee stressed the urgency of the initiative in light of worrying statistics, noting that Sarawak has recorded more than 6,500 road accident cases so far this year. 'Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, so it is crucial they are properly trained and licensed,' he emphasised. Application forms for the BLM programme will be distributed through schools from May 22 to June 3. Each application requires school verification and parental consent. In addition to the BLM programme, complementary initiatives such as the Transport Awareness, Behaviour, and Change (TABC) programme and traffic simulation games are also being introduced to raise road safety awareness among school children. Lee added that the programme not only reduces the financial burden on families but also fosters a culture of road safety and legal compliance among the younger generation. The implementation of the BLM programme is made possible through strategic collaboration between the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Sarawak Transport Ministry, Royal Malaysia Police, the Miri District Education Office, and local school principals. 'This programme reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to developing safer, more responsible road users from a young age,' Lee concluded. Adopt voluntary ePlate system for safety, standardisation, S'wak Transport Minister tells EV owners, dealers

Handout photo shows the ePlate which was the subject of the compliance query. KUCHING (May 9): Electric vehicle (EV) owners and dealers in Sarawak are encouraged to adopt the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) electronic number plate (ePlate) specifications, even though the initiative remains voluntary for now, said State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. His remarks follow recent public concern over a notice issued by JPJ to an EV owner for allegedly not complying with ePlate standards. JPJ Sarawak has since clarified that the notice was issued as part of advisory enforcement and did not involve any penalties. A subsequent review found that the number plate in question met the required specifications, and the matter has been resolved. Lee stressed that while the ePlate programme is a federal initiative currently limited to passenger vehicles, the Sarawak Transport Ministry supports its implementation by helping raise awareness among the public and industry players, according to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report today. 'We appreciate JPJ's responsiveness in reviewing the case and providing clarification. This incident highlights the importance of public awareness and understanding of new initiatives,' he said. Lee noted that while ePlates are not yet mandatory, they offer significant benefits in terms of enforcement, standardisation, and most importantly, emergency response. He explained that EVs present unique challenges during rescue operations due to their high-voltage systems. Proper identification through ePlates can enable first responders to act more swiftly and safely in such situations. 'Although not yet compulsory, all EV owners are strongly encouraged to adopt the JPJ ePlate to align with national efforts toward better enforcement, standardisation, and play an important role in supporting road safety and emergency response operations,' said Lee. He emphasised that green mobility is not just a global movement but a vital component of Sarawak's Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy, which aims to build a developed and sustainable region. Lee also called on both the public and private sectors to collaborate in embracing cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions for the benefit of present and future generations. electric vehicle ePlate EV JPJ lead Lee Kim Shin

JPJ seizes two vehicles with expired road tax during Sibu operation

Nor Azlan (left) is seen while JPJ officers check a staff member's vehicle at JPJ Sibu. SIBU (April 24): The Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized two vehicles with road tax that had expired during an operation at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here yesterday. JPJ Sarawak deputy director Nor Azlan Ibrahim said the car and van drivers were also issued summonses for operating vehicles with road tax that had expired for over six months. 'A total of 28 summons notices and 28 enforcement notices were also issued to drivers for various offenses during the operation,' he said in a statement. More than 390 vehicles of various types were inspected during the operation. Separately, JPJ Sarawak is also conducting an audit on compliance with standards and specifications involving vehicles owned by its officers and staff at all offices and branches throughout Sarawak. Nor Azlan said the audit covered regulations on the use of tinted windows and vehicle registration numbers. 'We want the vehicles used be JPJ Sarawak officers and staff to serve as the best example and reference in terms of compliance to all established regulations, as well as being consistently safe to use on the roads. 'We also highly encourage vehicle owners in Sarawak to visit any nearby JPJ Sarawak branch to obtain accurate information about permissible modifications approved under the Road Transport Act (RTA) 1987 and its subsidiary regulations,' he said. Nor Azlan added any staff vehicles found to be non-complaint and failing the audit would be issued a notice for further investigation and action. He said as a department responsible for enforcing road laws, it would be inappropriate to allow officers and staff to disregard the rules and set a bad example for the community. 'Compliance with road regulations and laws is not just about vehicle modifications but all aspects of road safety regulations, to ensure that the road environment, particularly in Sarawak, remains safe and conducive,' he added.
