KUCHING (May 30): The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ Sarawak) has launched a state-wide Road Safety Advocacy and Enforcement Programme in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations.
Federal Secretary for Sarawak, Dato Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan, said the primary focus of the programme is to ensure the safety of road users, particularly passengers of public transport services.
He explained that the initiative includes comprehensive inspections of public buses, particularly those operating from the state's three major terminals in Kuching, Sibu and Miri.
'Technical inspections are conducted prior to departure to ensure each vehicle is fully prepared and in optimal condition,' he said during the launch of the programme at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal on Thursday.
'In addition, traffic offence records are reviewed, and preliminary urine screenings are carried out on drivers to prevent individuals under the influence of drugs from operating vehicles,' he added.
Ahmad Nadzri said the approach reflects the department's commitment to safeguard road users, especially during festive and school holiday periods.
'To date, all public transport vehicles inspected have complied with the set regulations, and all 30 drivers tested for drugs returned negative results,' he reported.
Meanwhile, JPJ Sarawak has also launched two special enforcement operations: Ops Gawai Dayak 2025, running from May 24 to 31, and Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha, scheduled from June 4 to 10.
'These operations aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of the travelling public,' he stated.
Ahmad Nadzri also revealed that JPJ Sarawak has deployed plainclothes officers to selected locations.
'The presence of these officers is intended to monitor compliance with road laws more effectively. However, for security and operational integrity, the specific locations will not be disclosed publicly,' he said.
He emphasised that JPJ Sarawak will not tolerate any traffic violations or negligence that endangers the safety of others.
The integrated approach to advocacy and enforcement aligns with the government's aspiration to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2030.
He further encouraged the public to play an active role in promoting road safety by reporting traffic offences, such as illegal U-turns at 'P' junctions, which are known accident hotspots.
Reports can be submitted via the MyJPJ mobile application, the e-Aduan@JPJ portal, or by email to [email protected] .
Also present at the advocacy programme were JPJ Sarawak Director Norizan Jili, Sarawak National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Director Abdul Hamadiee Ibrahim, and Sarawak Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP) Assistant Director Faizul Azri Suhaili. enforcement JPJ Sarawak lead public transport road safety

Permit applications drop but police to tighten firework monitoring

KOTA BARU: As Hari Raya Aidiladha approaches, the Kelantan police have noted a low number of permit applications from traders intending to sell fireworks and firecrackers - a stark contrast to previous festive seasons. Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said that despite the drop in applications, police would continue to monitor trading activities, especially in public areas such as roadside stalls, markets and night bazaars. "We remind traders with valid permits to strictly adhere to the conditions set. "Non-compliance could lead to legal action, including seizure of goods and possible revocation of permits," he said. Mohd Yusoff also advised parents to remain vigilant and monitor their children's activities during the festive season, especially to prevent accidents involving unauthorised or dangerous fireworks. "Public safety is our priority. While we want everyone to enjoy the celebrations, safety should never be compromised," he said. A check around several areas in the state today found that fireworks and firecrackers were already being sold, particularly in high-traffic spots such as the 24-hour Wakaf Che Yeh night market. During the previous Aidilfitri festive season, the Kelantan Health Department reported more than 30 cases of firework-related injuries, many involving children and teenagers. "Let's not repeat past mistakes. What may seem like harmless fun could end in tragedy," Mohd Yusoff added.

Police launch Ops Lancar to ensure smooth Aidiladha travel, deploy 1,858 personnel

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — The police have launched Op Lancar, starting today and running until Monday (June 9), to ensure the safety of road users and maintain smooth traffic flow in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, which will be celebrated tomorrow. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said 1,858 police personnel will be deployed to locations expected to experience traffic congestion. He said the JSPT machinery would be mobilised comprehensively and systematically to ease traffic congestion on highways, federal roads, state roads, and municipal roads. 'Road users are advised to stay informed on the latest traffic updates via JSPT's official social media channels, which can help them plan their travels more effectively,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Yusri urged the public to act prudently and comply with traffic regulations, reminding them not to queue jump, misuse emergency lanes, and obstruct traffic flows. 'Stern action will be taken against road users who commit offences that could lead to accidents,' he stressed. He said JSPT is committed to ensuring the public can celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha in a safe and peaceful environment throughout their journeys, adding that their cooperation is crucial to ensure the comfort and safety of all road users. — Bernama
