JPJ open IP against lorry company in FRU fatal crash
KOTA BHARU — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has opened an investigation paper against the lorry company involved in the fatal accident which took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak, last month. JPJ senior director (enforcement) Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the investigation was being conducted under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. 'JPJ has seized the lorry involved, and the investigating officer has been instructed to complete the investigation paper by the end of this month. 'Once completed, the investigation paper will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,' he told reporters after observing the Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha here last night. He said the initial investigation found that there was a violation of permit conditions involving the lorry company. 'The lorry company was found to have violated the permit conditions by carrying an unauthorised load, namely stones, while the permit approved was to transport coal. 'We are still investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken,' he said. On May 12, a lorry driven by a man collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampan, Teluk Intan, while they were on their way back to Ipoh. As a result of the accident, nine FRU members were killed, while nine others were injured. — BERNAMA

JPJ Sarawak launches state-wide road safety campaign for Gawai Dayak, Aidiladha
Norizan shows Ahmad Nadzri the inspection certificate affixed to each bus which has passed the necessary safety checks before they are allowed to operate. – Photo by Jeremy Lanson KUCHING (May 30): The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ Sarawak) has launched a state-wide Road Safety Advocacy and Enforcement Programme in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations. Federal Secretary for Sarawak, Dato Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan, said the primary focus of the programme is to ensure the safety of road users, particularly passengers of public transport services. He explained that the initiative includes comprehensive inspections of public buses, particularly those operating from the state's three major terminals in Kuching, Sibu and Miri. 'Technical inspections are conducted prior to departure to ensure each vehicle is fully prepared and in optimal condition,' he said during the launch of the programme at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal on Thursday. 'In addition, traffic offence records are reviewed, and preliminary urine screenings are carried out on drivers to prevent individuals under the influence of drugs from operating vehicles,' he added. Ahmad Nadzri said the approach reflects the department's commitment to safeguard road users, especially during festive and school holiday periods. 'To date, all public transport vehicles inspected have complied with the set regulations, and all 30 drivers tested for drugs returned negative results,' he reported. Meanwhile, JPJ Sarawak has also launched two special enforcement operations: Ops Gawai Dayak 2025, running from May 24 to 31, and Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha, scheduled from June 4 to 10. 'These operations aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of the travelling public,' he stated. Ahmad Nadzri also revealed that JPJ Sarawak has deployed plainclothes officers to selected locations. 'The presence of these officers is intended to monitor compliance with road laws more effectively. However, for security and operational integrity, the specific locations will not be disclosed publicly,' he said. He emphasised that JPJ Sarawak will not tolerate any traffic violations or negligence that endangers the safety of others. The integrated approach to advocacy and enforcement aligns with the government's aspiration to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2030. He further encouraged the public to play an active role in promoting road safety by reporting traffic offences, such as illegal U-turns at 'P' junctions, which are known accident hotspots.
