Florida stays put in ESPN team recruiting rankings to close summer

Florida's position remains unchanged at No. 12 on the ESPN class of 2026 team recruiting rankings at the close of July. August 1 kicks off a dead period until the season begins. While Florida didn't add anyone during the second half of July, the work done over the summer has Billy Napier's recruiting staff in position to sign another top-10 class. Retaining the verbal commitments until the early signing period in November is critical, but the foundation for an elite class is there. Landing a few more of the team's top targets over the season should do the trick. There were several minor shakeups inside the top 25 since the last update. Miami moved up to No. 9, sending Oregon down a spot. Florida State gained a spot on Florida, passing Clemson for the No. 13-ranked class. Tennessee jumped two spots from No. 17 to No. 19, and Penn State dropped to No. 16. North Carolina also fell a spot to No. 17. The rest of the field stayed put, except Texas Tech, which jumped into the No. 25 spot. What ESPN says about Florida's 2026 recruiting class "Landing one of the top defenders in the country is the fastest way to climb the recruiting rankings, and that's exactly what Billy Napier did by securing five-star defensive end JaReylan McCoy. Ranked No. 9 overall and the second-best defender in the ESPN 300, McCoy would be Florida's highest-rated defensive signee in more than a decade. "A late close helped the Gators rise in the past cycle, but they've ascended much earlier this time around with an active summer. In June, they added a pair of dynamic pass catchers in Marquez Daniel and Justin Williams, as well as Georgia running back Carsyn Baker. "An early but key pickup was QB Will Griffin, who came on board in June 2024. A big-bodied passer with a strong arm and good accuracy, he could eventually be a nice transition from current QB DJ Lagway. Napier's staff has also bolstered both lines of scrimmage with several high-upside prospects ranked just outside the ESPN 300, adding critical depth as Florida looks to reassert itself in the SEC." Billy Napier and his Florida Gators notch their second big commit of the day, scoring a commitment from four-star defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy out of Tupelo, Mississippi. McCoy was previously committed to play for Brian Kelly at LSU, but decommitted in February. Advertisement The 6-foot-6 defensive lineman is ranked as the 163rd recruit nationally and 17th at his position in the class of 2026, according to On3 "Physical gifts are readily apparent on Friday nights," said Charles Power of On3. "Flashes good speed and functional movement skills. Closes to make some impressive plays. McCoy chose Florida over schools like Texas and Ole Miss, stating that he likes their player development. Florida head coach Billy Napier.© Brett Patzke-Imagn Images 'The brotherhood the players have with each other is something I really like," McCoy told On3. "The development system is big for me too. They have guys like Caleb Banks who is going to be a top five pick, so it's hard not to want to get in a place like that." McCoy also had high praise for Billy Napier, telling On3 that the coach really sold him on the school during his official visit. McCoy believes that Napier is building something great in Gainesville. Advertisement 'Coach Napier is taking Florida to a championship,' McCoy told On3. 'It's crazy that I can even be a part of something that he's building.' McCoy's commitment adds to a big weekend for Florida, which scored a commitment from four-star wide receiver Marquez Daniel earlier in the day. The two four-stars join a 2026 class for Florida that ranks at the 13th in the country, and sixth in the SEC. McCoy, who decommitted from LSU in February, named the Tigers, Florida and Texas as his top three options. He will announce his decision on July 1 after reopening his recruitment earlier this year. The four-star prospect is No. 8 out of Mississippi and No. 17 at his position, according to On3's Industry Rankings. He's currently on an official visit to the Gators and has trips scheduled for June to Texas, Ole Miss, and LSU. McCoy would add to the nation's top class in the 2026 cycle. The six-foot-seven, 245-pounder would be the second commit at his position alongside five-star Richard Anderson. Head coach Brian Kelly's staff made enough of an impact on him the first time around. With other schools still in the race, expect the Tigers to pull out all the stops to regain the services of one of the region's top prospects.

Texas surging for elite 2026 DL from Mississippi

Four-star defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy is still looking for a home after he decommitted from LSU in February. His list of suitors has been narrowed down to four. One of them is the Texas Longhorns, who he has an official visit to see on June 13. As his June 1 commitment date approaches, a few schools are separated themselves although McCoy's list is small. He recently mentioned that Texas along with Florida are leading the way in his recruitment at the moment. Advertisement "Everything is bigger in Texas for sure," McCoy told Rivals. "It was good meeting with the coaches and seeing the atmosphere out there. When I went out there, they did a meet-up with the fans. All the fans came out and the players signed autographs ... that's somewhere I know I can be ... with the fans supporting the team, that played a big role for me." McCoy is listed as the No. 108 recruit nationally and the No. 10 defensive end prospects according to Rivals. He is ranked as the No. 4 player out of Mississippi as well. The 6-foot-7, 245-pounder came out the gate as a freshman and showed that he was an elite talent. McCoy finished with 70 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and six sacks. As a sophomore in 2023, McCoy has his best season on the high school level. He racked up 44 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and two forced fumbles. While helping Tupelo High School win the Mississippi 6A state title last season, McCoy registered 30 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Advertisement The Longhorns didn't offer McCoy until March of this year. It says a lot about head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff that they have moved up McCoy's list of programs so fast in a short amount of time.
