Neil Nitin Mukesh reveals Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was offered to him: ‘Was asked to choose between this and Johnny Gaddaar'

Jaane Jaane Na turned out be a dream debut for actor Imran Khan but do you know the film was first offered to Neil Nitin Mukesh? Neil recently revealed in an interview that he was offered the film but with a caveat. (Also read: Neil Nitin Mukesh says many in the industry celebrate when a film doesn't work, admits it has become 'toxic') In conversation with Just Too Filmy, Neil said that producer Jhamu Sugandh offered him both Johnny Gaddaar and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na on the same day but asked to choose one. 'I loved Jaane Tu… It was a love story, and that was the trend," Neil said. However, the actor wasn't comfortable with people calling him a "chocolate boy" hence he went for a more uncoventional, darker role which led him to choose Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddaar. The New York actor further said, "Jaane Tu… was destined for Imran. It was an honour that I even got to read the film. I will never say that I rejected Jaane Tu… I didn't have the honour of working on that film. If I had the privilege of working on both, I'd eat both of them and give my 100 percent but unfortunately for me, I couldn't work on Jaane Tu." Directed and written by Shriram Raghavan, Johnny Gaddar was a neo-noir crime thriller which marked Neil's debut and earned him rave reviews. Produced by Adlabs the film also starred veteran actor Dharmendra Zakir Hussain, Rimi Sen, Vinay Pathak, Govind Namdeo, Dayanand Shetty and Ashwini Kalsekar. The film was a sleeper hit and received critical acclaim too. Neil will next be seen in Hai Junoon! Dream. Dare. Dominate, an upcoming musical drama television series directed by Abhishek Sharma. Produced under Jio Creative Lab, it also stars Jacqueline Fernandez. The series is scheduled to premiere on 16 May 2025 on JioHotstar.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was offered to me first, recalls Neil Nitin Mukesh: ‘I got Johnny Gaddaar and this, was told to choose one'

Neil Nitin Mukesh comes from a film family but unlike many of his peers, he did not get a starry launch in the movies. Instead, Neil made his debut in Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddaar where Neil did not play a traditional hero. In a recent interview, Neil shared that at the time, he was also offered Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, which was a quintessential college romance film, and he was given the option of choosing either one of these movies as his debut vehicle. In a chat with Just Too Filmy, Neil shared that he 'was offered two films on the same day' by producer Jhamu Sughand. 'One was Johnny Gaddaar and the other was Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, which was Imran Khan's debut,' he said. Neil recalled that Jhamu gave him scripts for both these films and asked him to read them both. 'I loved Jaane Tu… It was a love story, and that was the trend,' he said and recalled that at this time, he was often told that he looked like a 'chocolate boy' and Neil did not enjoy this tag. 'This annoyed me and I also thought to myself, 'Is that how I look?' he wondered. Neil Nitin Mukesh said that when he met Jhamu Sughand at a party, he got an invitation to his office. Upon landing there, Jhamu told him that he would be able to take up only one of the two films being offered, and he will have to audition for both. At this time, Neil decided to take a step back as he wondered that actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Harman Baweja were going to get launched with films like Saawariya and Love Story 2050, and he had to wonder if his launch film would hold against these big budget films. Nevertheless, Neil auditioned for both but his 'gut instinct' told him to choose Johnny Gaddaar. If I had the privilege of working on both, I'd eat both of them and give my 100 percent but unfortunately for me, I couldn't work on Jaane Tu.' In the same chat, Neil shared that even though he is the son of illustrious singer Nitin Mukesh, and the grandson of singer Mukesh, he was told at a very young age that he won't get a starry launch. 'At 13, my father told me that I have a daughter and I have to get her married. I also have a younger son who is ten years younger, I have to get him educated. Don't ever think that I can even put Rs 5 in making a film for you. I was 13 and I panicked. I didn't sleep that night,' he said. Neil Nitin Mukesh has been in the movies since 2007. He was last seen in the Zee5 film Hisaab Barabar, and will next be seen in the web series Hai Junoon.

Prateik Smita Patil's painful confession: 'My grandmother died seeing me a drug addict'

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Actor Prateik Smita Patil recently opened up about the dark chapter of his early years, candidly sharing how his dependence on drugs led to his expulsion from Subhash Ghai 's prestigious acting institute. In a heartfelt interview, the actor reflected on how substance abuse cast a shadow over both his personal relationships and budding who first appeared on the big screen in 2008 with Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, confessed that he had become what he described as a 'troubled soul' due to his addictions. Today, he carries deep remorse for the choices he made during that turbulent time."I took a series of destructive turns," he admitted. "I don't think I could have behaved differently back then. From an early age, I was grappling with emotional weight. Eventually, I chose to escape through alcohol and drugs. I surrendered to my vulnerabilities. I had my own reasons—complex, layered reasons. It's not as straightforward as it may seem today. But those decisions led to the collapse of everything—from my career path to my personal stability."Raised by his maternal grandparents after losing his mother during childbirth, Prateik described how his addiction hurt not just himself but also those who loved him most. 'In the final years of her life, my grandmother saw the worst version of me,' he shared with visible regret. 'I was deep into substance dependence. She passed away while I was still struggling. That remains one of my biggest regrets. I so badly wish she had lived long enough to witness who I've become now.'He also recounted the specific moment he was asked to leave Whistling Woods International , the film school founded by Subhash Ghai. 'After shooting Jaane Tu, I enrolled at Whistling Woods,' he recalled. 'I dabbled in classes, unsure of what I wanted. I stayed there for almost two years, but then I was expelled for using drugs. Looking back, there's a strange irony to it. I got kicked out of every academic institution I attended. I had become a danger to myself and a disruption to others.'While his journey was filled with painful mistakes, Prateik's story now carries a message of growth and healing. Through painful reflection, he is confronting his past and striving to shape a better future—one not defined by the chaos he once embraced but by the strength he's now building.
