Memorial grows after crash kills 2 children, 1 woman in Largo

LARGO, Fla. - A third person has died after a car crash in Largo on Saturday afternoon, according to police. The backstory The Largo Police Department says a Dodge Durango collided with a Kia Soul that was making a left turn at the corner of Ridge Rd. and Orangeview Dr. around 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Police say Jabari Elijah Solomon, 10, and Charlie Herbert Solomon Rivera, 4, were killed in the crash. On Sunday, police said the driver of the Kia Soul, Gail Price, 78, had died from her injuries. Police say an adult passenger, Herbert Rivera, 58, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. "The whole cul-de-sac knows him as, you know, he helped everybody in the neighborhood." Some neighbors heard the crash happen and say it was a devastating scene. "I was home from lunch and we heard a car downshift, roaring engine and we heard it backfire," Scott Kelley said. "And then all of a sudden, I mean literally seconds later, you heard the impact. The whole house vibrated." Kelley says they didn't know who was involved in the crash at first, but he says they learned that it involved their neighbor and his two children. "And they were here for the weekend to spend time with their father," he said. On Sunday, neighbors built a memorial that continued to grow, as people stopped by to leave mementos and pay their respects. "I never want to see anything like that." Police say the driver of the Durango, Adarius Hayes, 20, was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Hayes is a linebacker at the University of Miami, according to the school's website. Police say neither driver showed signs of impairment. "Stay in prayer for the family," Hedden said. "They need it right now." What's next Police are still investigating to figure out what led up to the crash, including trying to determine whether speed was a factor. The Largo Police Department (LPD) confirmed on Facebook that it was investigating the "double fatality crash" on Saturday afternoon in the area of Ridge Road and Orangeview Drive, with a large portion of the area closed for several hours so they could investigate. In an update later that day, the LPD confirmed the road had reopened. Public information officer Megan Santo confirmed, in a statement to ESPN, that University of Miami linebacker Adarius Hayes was involved in the crash. While the outlet reported that the officer did not clarify if he was driving one of the involved vehicles, she allegedly identified him as one of the drivers to WFLA. Authorities do not believe that alcohol played a factor in the crash, per both ESPN and WFLA. The Herald reported that several unidentified people had been hospitalized with 'serious injuries," and local reporter Andy Slater also confirmed on X that Hayes had been "hospitalized" following the crash. "This is an ongoing and active investigation, and no further information is available for release at this time," Santo said in a statement to ESPN. The LPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Sunday, May 11. The crash left behind a twisted fence, with witnesses telling WFLA that the football player appeared distraught when he got out of one of the vehicles. An unidentified neighbor spoke with the outlet about what they witnessed on the scene, stating that they were "the first one out" when the crash took place. The neighbor "started calling for somebody call 911 because there was a child" involved. 'This all happened because the hot rod in this road all the time. We come down here and they're raising the car or you're speeding here, come through here at 60, 70, 80 miles an hour even, and many times we call the police," the neighbor said. "No, there's nothing. Not much changes.' During his freshman season in 2024, Hayes played in 12 games and finished with four tackles and one interception, according to his school's website. He was previously one of the top-ranked linebackers in the nation at Largo High School and committed to Miami following offers from Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
