The children have been identified as Jabari Elijah Solomon, 10, and Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria, 4, per multiple outlets
University of Miami linebacker Adarius Hayes was also involved in the crash and was hospitalized over the weekend, ESPN and The Miami Herald reportedTwo children are dead and several people, including a college football player, are injured following a car crash in Florida.
Jabari Elijah Solomon, 10, and Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria, 4, died on Saturday, May 10, after a Dodge Durango collided with a Kia Soul that was making a left turn in the city of Largo at around 1:45 p.m. local time, according to ESPN, The Miami Herald and NBC affiliate WFLA.
The Largo Police Department (LPD) confirmed on Facebook that it was investigating the "double fatality crash" on Saturday afternoon in the area of Ridge Road and Orangeview Drive, with a large portion of the area closed for several hours so they could investigate.
In an update later that day, the LPD confirmed the road had reopened.
Public information officer Megan Santo confirmed, in a statement to ESPN, that University of Miami linebacker Adarius Hayes was involved in the crash.
While the outlet reported that the officer did not clarify if he was driving one of the involved vehicles, she allegedly identified him as one of the drivers to WFLA.
Authorities do not believe that alcohol played a factor in the crash, per both ESPN and WFLA. The Herald reported that several unidentified people had been hospitalized with 'serious injuries," and local reporter Andy Slater also confirmed on X that Hayes had been "hospitalized" following the crash.
"This is an ongoing and active investigation, and no further information is available for release at this time," Santo said in a statement to ESPN.
The LPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Sunday, May 11.
The crash left behind a twisted fence, with witnesses telling WFLA that the football player appeared distraught when he got out of one of the vehicles.
An unidentified neighbor spoke with the outlet about what they witnessed on the scene, stating that they were "the first one out" when the crash took place. The neighbor "started calling for somebody call 911 because there was a child" involved.
'This all happened because the hot rod in this road all the time. We come down here and they're raising the car or you're speeding here, come through here at 60, 70, 80 miles an hour even, and many times we call the police," the neighbor said. "No, there's nothing. Not much changes.'
During his freshman season in 2024, Hayes played in 12 games and finished with four tackles and one interception, according to his school's website.
He was previously one of the top-ranked linebackers in the nation at Largo High School and committed to Miami following offers from Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Multiple friends and teammates shared their thoughts on social media following the crash, including linebacker Raul Aguirre, who posted an image from a team outing. "Got you bro🤞🏼🙏🏻 keep fighting," he wrote on X.

Police ID man arrested after chase with officers, crash in west Lubbock

Police on Monday identified a 21-year-old man accused of leading officers on a chase that ended in a crash with another vehicle early Saturday in west Lubbock. The chase began after a Lubbock police officer reportedly saw a Lincoln Town Car driving recklessly around 3:11 a.m. in the 5800 block of 19th Street and attempted to make a traffic stop, according to a statement from LPD. The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Diego Castillo, is accused of fleeing from the scene, prompting the pursuing. The vehicle was traveling south in the 4500 block of West Loop 289 and exited at the Marsha Sharp Freeway, where it attempted to pass a pickup truck that was in front of it. However, the car collided with the truck. Police say Castillo attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested a short time later. He was taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center. He faces charges of reckless driving, evading in a vehicle, evading on foot, possession of marijuana, failure to ID and failure to stop and render aid, along with an unrelated warrant. Jail records indicate Castillo was no longer in the detention center as of Monday. The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries. The incident remains under investigation. Heartbreaking Update on Investigation Into Death of Brett Gardner's Son

Nearly three months after the shocking death of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner's 14-year-old son, Miller, authorities have been unable to rule out a homicide. Miller Gardner died on March 21st, 2025, at a resort in Costa Rica, where he was vacationing with his family. Authorities initially considered asphyxiation and food poisoning, but later cited carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death, with a carboxyhemoglobin saturation of 64% detected in Miller's body. They also initially insisted that it was an accident. Now, in mid-June, officials have yet to determine if the gut-wrenching tragedy was indeed an accident or otherwise. Officials in Costa Rica, according to ESPN, are attempting 'to determine whether the cause of death was a homicide or not, and, if so, to establish responsibility.' Adding to the concern about the death of Brett Gardner's son is the fact that authorities aren't exactly indicating that the investigation into whether or not this is a homicide is part of standard operating procedure. Asked precisely by ESPN if there is some concern that would lead them to keep looking beyond the accidental, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said the following: 'The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide. For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed.' This is not to say they're leaning one way or the other. But the fact that we're in June and they can't rule out foul play on a 14-year-old is shocking. There is reportedly no timetable to reach a conclusion either. RELATED: All of this has to be a heartbreaking layer to an already tragic story for Brett Gardner and the whole family. 'We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,' a statement from the family read at the time of Miller's death. 'Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile,' it continued. 'He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.' Now, the questions still linger, sadly. Brett Gardner spent his entire 14-year MLB career with the New York Yankees, debuting in 2008 and becoming a key outfielder known for his speed, defensive prowess, and clutch hitting. He helped the team win a World Series title in 2009 and earned an All-Star nod in 2015. Gardner retired in 2022, leaving a legacy as a reliable, hard-working player who embodied the Yankee spirit. Fans adored Gardner for his gritty, never-say-die attitude, hustling on every play and delivering in big moments. His loyalty to the team, staying with the Yankees his entire career, cemented him as a fan favorite in the Bronx. ‘We will not be intimidated': Tampa Bay organizers increase security ahead of area protests

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With dozens of Tampa Bay area protests against policies enforced by the Trump Administration expected Saturday, safety is a concern for many. In other cities, some demonstrations have turned violent. Florida state and local officials spoke against riots. 'We are not California. We do not allow rioting in the state of Florida,' said Florida State Attorney General James Uthmeier. 'We do not tolerate rioting as groups talk about assembling over the weekend, we haven't seen much of that in Florida. But if you do… we are ready across the state to ensure it is nipped in the bud right away.' 'We will kill you': Democrats, Republicans at odds over protest warning language Threats of violence have been seen on social media. The Citrus County Sheriff's Office posted about a scheduled protest in Inverness, then they followed up with a video about the post. 'I am hopeful that some of the negative comments referring to violence or disruptions are made by a small minority, and maybe not even people from Citrus County,' said Sheriff David Vincent. In Jacksonville, a man was arrested for threatening potential protesters when he posted a comment saying in part, 'I seen any large gatherings to protest ICE, I'm going to grab my buddies tow truck and plow through.' 'Well, it's certainly scary but we will not be intimidated by threats of violence,' said Helen Amburgey, an organizer with Pinellas NOW. She said their priority is getting their message across in a safe way. 'Everyone at our event is committed to a peaceful protest. We make sure of that when they sign up,' Amburgey said. 'In light of current events, we have recruited additional volunteers, additional safety marshals.' Amburgey said if someone starts causing problems during a peaceful protest, do not engage with them. Instead, she said to move to another area and get law enforcement involved if necessary. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
