‘Legend of radio and TV broadcasting' — tributes pour in for Darren Scott

Industry colleagues, friends and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to radio presenter Darren Scott. The Hot 102.7FM presenter, who suffered from melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, for more than 38 years, died on Tuesday. He is survived by his sons Mark and Matthew. Tributes from colleagues are mounting on social media as people express their sadness about his passing. Darren is remembered for the impact he made on the airwaves, having worked for stations including Radio Bop, 5FM, Jacaranda FM, East Coast Radio and Hot 102.7FM. 'We salute a South African radio legend who made a massive impact in shaping 5FM. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Rest in power, Darren Scott,' read a statement shared by 5FM. 'Rest in peace #DarrenScott, legend of radio and television broadcasting. Gutted to hear this news but know Darren has been suffering for a long, long time. Was privileged to have worked closely with him on SuperSport broadcasts in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The ultimate professional with a real sense of humour and quick wit like no other. His love of broadcasting probably lay in radio, but his ease of presenting on television in shows such as # BootsAndAll and all the many #rugby and other sports encounters was second to none,' wrote performance coach and consultant Dave Nosworthy.

What time will Ramaphosa meet Trump?

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to meet with Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday in an effort to reset relations between the two countries. Recently, tensions have escalated between the US and South Africa, as Trump has accused the South African government of discriminating against minorities, particularly Afrikaners. Ramaphosa will be accompanied by four key ministers: Ronald Lamola, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development; Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the Minister in the Presidency; John Steenhuisen, the Agriculture Minister; and Parks Tau, the Trade and Competition Minister. Also joining Ramaphosa's delegation will be prominent South African businessman Johann Rupert, along with former golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. There were rumours that South African-born billionaire Elon Musk would attend the meeting, but reports indicate he may not be present. Ramaphosa is expected to arrive at the White House around 17:30 (SA time) for the important bilateral meeting with Trump on Wednesday. Political analyst Boitumelo Senokoane says Ramaphosa must be well prepared when meeting Trump on Wednesday. 'As soon as he (Donald Trump) gets the deal that he wants to achieve, he will argue that he was convinced otherwise. He's not naïve, he's not a fool, he knows what's happening on the ground, he knows the history of South Africa. So, it's not about the Afrikaners, it's about him bullying the world,' he said as per JacarandaFM . 'Expect bullying': Ramaphosa warned as he prepares to meet Trump

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to meet his United States (US) counterpart, Donald Trump, on Wednesday in Washington DC. The two presidents are scheduled to discuss the restoration of diplomatic and trade relations between their countries. Recently, tensions have increased between the US and South Africa, as Trump has accused the South African government of discriminating against minorities, particularly Afrikaners. Ramaphosa will be accompanied by four key ministers: Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Ronald Lamola, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, and Trade and Competition Minister Parks Tau. 'We can't be bullied and we should not allowed to be bullied. In fact, I'm of a view that if USA did want anything that has to do with South Africa or its investment, they would have closed the embassy of South Africa. But it's about that—it's for them muzzling in front of everyone, proving to everyone that they can be able to do certain things but they operate within certain limits,' Senokoane added. Ramaphosa will meet Trump at the Oval on Wednesday amid strained diplomatic relations between South Africa and the US. 'Good Morning Angels' rally behind 10 year old Eben Beukes

The spirit of community shone brightly this week as Jacaranda FM's 'Good Morning Angels' initiative stepped up to support 10-year-old Eben Beukes. Euben is a young boy whose life was turned upside down by multiple strokes. Eben suffered severe cerebral damage after a viral infection triggered Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS) and a secondary streptococcal infection. The boy is now blind, unable to walk or speak, and requires full-time care, according to Good Things Guy. EBEN'S STORY Eben's story is one of heartbreak and resilience. In December 2024, what began as a routine illness rapidly escalated into a life-threatening condition. The strokes left Eben with severe disabilities, mirroring the tragic loss of his mother, who passed away from strokes two years prior. Now, Eben lives with his father Hendrik and 15-year-old sister Ané, with Hendrik carrying the heavy responsibility of caring for his children alone. Faced with overwhelming medical and homecare costs, the family reached out to Good Morning Angels. The response from the community was swift and generous. Round Table Pretoria donated R50,000. Caring Daisies matched this with another R50,000. Corestruc contributed R30,000, and the Good Morning Angels Fund NPC pledged R30,000, bringing the total to R160,000. Martin Bester, host of Jacaranda FM's Breakfast with Martin Bester , expressed the collective sentiment. 'No 10-year-old should have to go through what Eben is going through – and no father should have to do it alone. 'Good Morning Angels' is about giving families like the Beukes family the support they need when life becomes too much to carry on their own. We're proud to stand with them.' The funds will be used to equip Eben's home with specialised medical equipment, including beds and therapy tools. To ease the financial strain on Hendrik as he prepares to care for Eben full-time once he returns from rehabilitation. This remarkable show of solidarity highlights the power of community in South Africa. From school friends to local organisations, South Africans have rallied to give Eben and his family hope amid their darkest days. As one donor shared, 'From one parent to another, we're with you.' Good Morning Angels has been changing lives since 2005, offering a hand-up rather than a hand-out to those facing hardship. Eben's story is a poignant reminder of the initiative's impact and the kindness that thrives in South African hearts. In a country where community spirit often makes the impossible possible, Eben's journey is a testament to the strength found in unity and compassion. Together, South Africans are lighting the way for this brave young boy and his family. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
