Toronto family ‘devastated' after 3 kids killed in alleged drunk driving crash
The family of three Toronto children who were killed in an alleged drunk driving crash says they are 'utterly devastated' as they plan a funeral for the victims later this month. Ramone Lavina, 15, his younger brother Jace, 13, and their six-year-old sister Mya died in a collision on May 18 that Toronto police allege was caused by an impaired teen driver. The family's lawyer confirmed a publication ban on the children's identities was lifted on Thursday. Police have said the crash happened shortly after midnight at the eastbound off-ramp at Renforth Drive and Highway 401. They said a 19-year-old behind the wheel of a Dodge Caravan was allegedly speeding as he exited the highway, lost control, went over a raised median and slammed into a Chrysler Pacifica minivan that was stopped at a red light. Inside the minivan were a mother, her four children and a male acquaintance of the family, police said. The Lavina-Galve family said they are reeling from the 'unimaginable tragedy,' and they thanked the first responders, hospital staff and community members who have provided support. Police said 19-year-old Ethan Lehouillier of Georgetown, Ont., was arrested at the scene of the crash and faces 12 charges, including three counts of impaired driving causing death and three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm. The allegations have not been tested in court. Jim Cantos, a family friend, said in an interview after the crash that the Lavina siblings were 'tight-knit.' He said he's known the Lavina family for years — the children's father, Maverick Lavina, is an old friend of his sister's, and they went to high school together. 'Whenever Ramone came to practice, his siblings were there as well, cheering him on. I believe they did everything together.' Cantos said the Lavinas are Filipino Canadian and he'd heard from many in the community who are shaken by the news. He said the family is well-liked in the community. 'The Filipino community is hit hard by this,' he said, adding it's been a tough time for Filipino Canadians, especially after the late April tragedy at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, where 11 people were killed after an SUV rammed into a crowd. 'Filipinos, we move as a group… We are very tight family-wise and community-wise,' said Cantos. 'No parent wants to go through something as tragic as burying their own kid. That's something that a kid does to their parents, not the other way around.'

Publication ban lifted for 3 siblings killed in crash with alleged drunk driver in Toronto
A publication ban covering the identities of the three siblings who died in a crash involving a suspected impaired, speeding driver has been lifted at the request of Crown prosecutors. On Thursday, an Ontario court removed the ban which had previously forbidden the naming of 15-year-old Ramone, 13-year-old Jace and six-year-old Mya Laviña-Galve. The family of the children has indicated the funeral service is planned for June 13 and 14. The three siblings died in the early hours of Sunday, May 18, after their family car was struck while waiting at a red light by an allegedly drunk driver coming off Highway 401 in Etobicoke. At the time, Toronto police said a Chrysler Pacifica was sitting at a red light on Renforth Drive when a speeding Dodge Caravan, leaving Highway 401, lost control and collided with the minivan. The only surviving child and their mother were both taken to hospital and expected to make a recovery. They said the mother — also named Jace — remembered the details of the crash clearly. 'She remembers everything pretty vividly, she remembers the car coming so fast towards them,' they said. Another cousin said, 'She thought it was a dream, she can't imagine this car going this fast, this can't be real.' The family requested the publication ban be lifted, court heard. A GoFundMe set up for the family has surpassed $230,000 in contributions. 'The Laviña-Galve Family, a family that is so core to our community, now needs our support during this incredibly difficult time,' the GoFundMe read. Mikayla Matthews opened up in a new interview about how "traumatizing" her first pregnancy at age 16 was The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star had just met her now-husband Jace Terry weeks before Matthews talked about how the long-term effects of the sexual abuse she endured as a child "triggered" her in her marriageMikayla Matthews is candidly opening up about her first pregnancy. Matthews, 25, appeared on the May 21 episode of The Squeeze with Tay Lautner and spoke at length about the sexual abuse she endured in her younger years and how it continued to affect her as she learned she was pregnant at age 16. After moving out of her mother's house at age 15, she met her now-husband Jace Terry through her sister and his roommate, who worked together. 'I think I got pregnant literally a year, almost a year exactly after I moved out of my house at 15,' she said. 'And then I'm jumping into now being a mom and raising a kid at 16, 17. I think all that was traumatizing, but also it was so helpful being with someone like Jace because, again, he's been like so patient with me and he like truly wants me to be the best version of myself.' Even though Jace is now a 'safe place' for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star, the start of their relationship was challenging. She explained she 'had only known him for like a month before' she got pregnant. At the time, she was living with her sister and she eventually dropped out of high school when she learned she was expecting. 'I didn't really tell any of my friends. I kind of just dropped off the face of the earth,' she remembered. She explained that she found out she was pregnant after she spent time in a sauna and passed out. Her mom took her to the hospital, and a blood test showed she was in the early stages of pregnancy. 'Immediately,' she decided she wanted to 'keep' the baby, she recalled, noting that Jace's 'immediate reaction' was to support whatever she wanted to do. Even though Mikayla and her mom still hadn't talked about the abuse she had faced, she still relied on her because she was one of the few people who knew about the pregnancy. 'None of my friends knew. So I was just so isolated and alone,' she remembered. 'And at this point, I barely knew Jace. . . . So, although I wasn't comfortable around [my mom], it was just like more comfortable than with Jace at that point.' At the same time, 'being around her [mom] was obviously very triggering," she added. Mikayla and Jace ultimately welcomed their son Beckham in 2017. They married in 2018. The family welcomed a daughter, Haven, in August 2019 and a son named Tommie in November 2021. She is currently pregnant with their fourth child. Mikayla said that after she welcomed her first child, she still 'internalized all of that hurt and abuse' and only recently began working through it in therapy. During her second pregnancy, she noted that 'sex became very triggering,' but Jace didn't know about her past. Mikayla would have sex with him in hopes it would help their relationship but then, she said, 'Subconsciously I was resenting him and making him the abuser where it wasn't the case.' She added that she's already 'learned a lot through therapy' about why that happens and how to deal with those triggers. Mikayla praised Jace as 'really patient' with her as she dealt with both her lasting trauma and her struggles with chronic illness. She noted that she started to open up to him about some of the abuse she faced about 'six years ago.' 'I had to kind of tell him because it would get so frustrating," she explained. "And I feel like a lot of that anger was being put on him and he felt a lot of rejection of like, 'I'm not attractive. My wife doesn't want to sleep with me.' And that made me feel so guilty.' She noted that she would react defensively, but opening up to him more helped him 'really understand.' She added, 'He's very gentle with me because he knows the situation.'
