Game Thread: Rangers at White Sox
It looked like the White Sox were going to have a big pitching edge today, but that was before Jonathan Cannon got scratched because of lower back tightness and Bryse Wilson got the emergency starting assignment. Wilson hasn't pitched in 10 days, and last time out gave up seven earned runs in 5 1⁄3 against the Reds, raising his ERA to a nice, even 6.00. That may give a slight edge to Rangers starter Jack Leiter, who has problems of his own. The hard-throwing (97.1 mph average on his fastball) righty began the season with two solid starts, but then went on the IL with what must have been a really bad blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand, because he was out for 25 days. Advertisement Since being back, Leiter has had a very hard time finding the plate, with 15 walks in 26 innings across five starts. Opponents only bat a paltry .186 against him, but the control problems have led to a 4.25 ERA. The White Sox are middling in walks this year, a big improvement over the last decade or so (well, except for Lenyn Sosa), and two walks were key to the three-run inning that beat the Rangers last night. If they can remain patient, Leiter may give them enough freebies to score some runs. Leiter will face a Sox lineup that is the same as last night's except for Matt Thaiss taking over the catching duties. Wilson gets to take on a weak Texas lineup that has lost five in a row, not scoring more than three runs in a game since last Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. Central, on a cool but pleasant 60°, partly cloudy with light wind from left to right. Usual broadcast suspects. Advertisement More from

Rangers' offense reappears in 11-1 rout of Cardinals
May 31 - Marcus Semien went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Texas Rangers broke out of their offensive funk with an 11-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers' Josh Jung and Sam Haggerty each had three hits and three RBIs. Wyatt Langford added a two-run homer, and Kyle Higashioka (2-for-3), Haggerty and Semien scored three runs apiece. Jack Leiter (4-2) was the beneficiary of the outburst, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing three hits and two walks and striking out six. Caleb Boushley handled the final three innings, permitting one run. The 11-run outburst was the Rangers' largest since April 29 and more than Texas scored in the past four games combined. St. Louis starter Matthew Liberatore (3-4) gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out five in his worst outing since surrendering five runs in a loss in Pittsburgh on April 7. The Cardinals had won five of their previous six games, while the Rangers had lost eight of 10. Texas jumped on top in the first inning when Jung's two-out single drove in Haggerty, who opened the frame by reaching first on a throwing error by Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn. Texas then produced a four-run second. Haggerty tripled to the right field corner to send home Higashioka and Semien. Langford followed with a towering home run over the left field fence to stoke the lead to 5-0. The Rangers added to their lead in the sixth off St. Louis reliever Gordon Graceffo. Jake Burger singled, Higashioka walked and Semien singled home a run. One out later, Haggerty plated Higashioka with a base hit to make it 7-0. Langford then walked to load the bases, and Jung followed with a two-out, two-run single to left field to push across Semien and Haggerty and make it 9-0. Semien's two-run homer in the seventh expanded Texas' lead to 11-0. The Cardinals finally scored in the eighth when Lars Nootbaar's double plated Victor Scott II. The game was the opener of a three-game interleague series. --Field Level Media

Cardinals vs Rangers: How to Watch and What to Watch for
Cardinals vs Rangers: How to Watch and What to Watch for originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The St. Louis Cardinals are now eight games above .500 for the first time since 2022 and continue to push the Chicago Cubs — who sit three games ahead of the Cards — for the top spot in the NL Central. Advertisement Next up, the Cardinals (32-24) travel to Arlington, Texas, to face the Texas Rangers (27-30), who currently sit in third the AL West. St. Louis comes into the contest with two-straight series victories against the Diamondbacks and the Orioles. The Rangers come into the contest having lost eight of their last 10 and have lost their last three series. Hot vs. Cold The Cardinals enter the series on a high note, having won five of their last six games, including a recent 6–4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Their offense has been productive, scoring 29 runs over this stretch, while the bullpen has posted a commendable 2.79 ERA. The Rangers on the other hand have been one of the coldest teams in the MLB. Their offense has been an absolute disaster during that stretch, scoring just 22 runs in their past 10 games. Advertisement 2. Pitching Showdown: Liberatore vs. Leiter Cardinals' left-hander Matthew Liberatore has been impressive, not allowing more than two earned runs in his last eight starts and boasts a 2.73 ERA over 59.1 innings this season. Opposing him is Rangers' right-hander Jack Leiter, who holds a 4.17 ERA over eight starts. 3. Managerial Connections The series also features a reunion of sorts, as Rangers' senior advisor Skip Schumaker, a former Cardinals player and bench coach, faces his old team. Schumaker joined the Rangers' front office in November 2024 after managing the Miami Marlins.
