Former Prairie View A&M college football player Jackson Bailey has died at the age of 22, the school announced on Tuesday. Bailey, who began his college career at Arizona before transferring to Louisiana-Monroe, was on Prairie View's roster for the 2023-24 season. In a statement on the athletic department's website, the school did not disclose a cause of death for Bailey. 'The Prairie View A&M University Department of Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, teammates, and fraternity brothers of Jackson 'Jacks' Bailey, a cherished member of the Panther football program and the PVAMU community,' the statement began. 'Jackson joined the football team for the 2023–24 season. Although he did not appear in any official games, his presence and energy were felt deeply within the locker room and across campus. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. – Zeta Beta Chapter, Jackson exemplified brotherhood, resilience, and purpose. The statement went on to say that Bailey 'brought a light-hearted and grounded spirit to everything' before touching on his faith. 'His favorite words to live by were: 'God got me.' The Panthers' athletics department shared a lengthy post announcing Bailey's passing on Tuesday. Bailey was a member of Prairie View A&M football during the 2023-2024 season, but he did not appear in any official games that season. Bailey was a standout linebacker at Red Oak High School in DeSoto, Texas, where he earned 5A Division I all-state honors his senior year, when he registered 64 tackles and four interceptions. He moved on to play at Arizona, where he redshirted his freshman year. He then transferred to Louisiana-Monroe, where he appeared in nine games. He recorded 14 tackles and one quarterback hurry during the 2022-2023 season. According to Prairie View A&M University, Bailey transferred to be closer to home his junior year. Though he did not appear in a game for the Panthers, his presence was deeply felt within the locker room and across the campus community, according to a statement released by the university's athletic department. Bailey, a defensive lineman, joined the Prairie View A&M University football team for the 2023–24 season after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe. He began his collegiate career at Arizona, where he redshirted. Originally from DeSoto, Texas, Bailey starred at Red Oak High School and earned all-state honors in Class 5A Division I as a senior. In his standout 2020 season, he posted 64 tackles, four interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and three fumble recoveries. Bailey chose Prairie View A&M, the only HBCU he attended, to be closer to his family. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. – Zeta Beta Chapter. Jackson Bailey was known for his brotherhood, positive energy, and deep sense of purpose. His football IQ, natural speed, and infectious personality earned him the respect of teammates and coaches alike. He dreamed of playing in the NFL or pursuing a career in physical therapy to help others heal through sports. Off the field, Bailey had a passion for cooking, music, and spending time with family, especially during the holidays. He also enjoyed playing video games and the piano, a lesser-known talent. Bailey often credited his mother, Debbie Bailey, as his greatest inspiration. He is also survived by his father, Bryon, and siblings Taylor and Kebron.
