Cantwell named Max Preps national male athlete of the year
NIXA, Mo–Nixa Eagle and future Miami Hurricane offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell was named the Max Preps male athlete of the year. Cantwell is the number one football recruit in the country for the class of 2026. And last month he committed to play for the Miami Hurricanes. Cantwell also won the state discus and shot put competition last weekend in Jefferson City. Jackson Cantwell picked Miami because he feels that the Hurricane coaching staff can prepare him for the next level, the National Football League. In his social media account, the 6-foot-8 junior said he was blessed and humbled by this award. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ten programs that won May in recruiting
The month of June is always one of the biggest in the recruiting calendar but many teams across the Power Four conferences loaded up in one way or another in May. Here is a look at 10 that won the month: MORE: USC flexing its muscle again after stealing TE Mark Bowman from UGA Advertisement CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info GEORGIA It was not a dream month for Georgia, actually frustrating in some ways, as the Bulldogs led for five-star Jackson Cantwell and four-star tight end Mark Bowman and they picked Miami and USC, respectively. But this is Georgia so there are inevitably going to be many big recruiting wins and five-star quarterback Jared Curtis leads the way. He re-committed to Georgia over Oregon and that was crucial. Athlete Ryan Mosley and offensive lineman Graham Houston are big additions and then four-star defensive back Jordan Smith has star potential. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH GEORGIA FANS AT MIAMI There were only two commitments for Miami in March but there was no bigger pledge in this entire recruiting class than No. 1 overall prospect Jackson Cantwell picking the Hurricanes. Miami beat out Georgia and many others for the five-star offensive tackle and his pledge only further adds to some elite players along the offensive line. Three-star offensive lineman Rhys Woodrow adds depth as the real celebration this month was Cantwell's pledge as Miami ponied up late and landed him. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MIAMI FANS AT NORTHWESTERN Jeff McCulloch/ Advertisement Northwestern entered May with only two commitments. The Wildcats are leaving the month with nine pledges and have some momentum heading into the summer. There were no four-stars but powerful three-star running back Sean Morris out of Los Angeles Loyola and three-star linebacker Jacob Curry out of Ponte Vedra (Fla.) Nease were two big victories. More could be coming as Northwestern has a strong group of prospects on campus this weekend. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH NORTHWESTERN FANS AT NOTRE DAME The future of Notre Dame's backfield might have been figured out in May as the Irish landed commitments from four-stars Javian Osborne and Jonaz Walton. Those were two top targets and Notre Dame landed both as the Irish have shown over the years they can run the ball with the best of them. Notre Dame also loaded up on the defensive line as well with four-star defensive tackle Tiki Hola out of Texas and four-star edge Ja'Kobe Clapper out of Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier are two other major pickups in May as the Irish have the second-best class nationally. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH NOTRE DAME FANS AT OLE MISS Coach Lane Kiffin and his staff only landed three commitments in May but all three are four-stars and could make an immediate impact in Oxford. Four-star running back Damarius Yates had been committed to Mississippi State so landing him was big. Four-star receiver Corey Barber has had a great offseason, loaded up on offers and is one of the top offensive players in Georgia. And then there is four-star linebacker Izayia Williams, as Ole Miss was his fifth pledge this cycle. Many others are trying to flip him so the Rebels will have some work to keep him until signing day. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OLE MISS FANS AT PENN STATE Will Garlick Advertisement Penn State is up to 17 commitments and the Nittany Lions have the fifth-best class in 2026 as May was really helpful to get there. Landing four-star receiver Davion Brown over Michigan and Georgia was the biggest win of the month but Penn State also did great work in recruiting strongholds Pennsylvania and Virginia. Three-star athlete Jaziel Hart, who picked the Nittany Lions over the Wolverines and many others, could be a sleeper in this group. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH PENN STATE FANS AT SMU SMU tied Northwestern with the most commitments in May with seven as the Mustangs loaded up with quantity but also quality. Two four-star receivers came aboard in Aljour Miles, who had Oklahoma and others high on the list, and Jakai Anderson, who flipped from LSU. Adding massive four-star offensive lineman Pupungatoa Katoa was another major win for coach Rhett Lashlee and his staff. Picking up former Texas A&M commit and three-star defensive back Ryan Gilbert was another major recruiting victory as SMU is coming off a run to the College Football Playoff. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH SMU FANS AT TEXAS Half of Texas' recruiting class committed in May and it was an impressive haul for the Longhorns. Getting four-star defensive back Hayward Howard from New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr away from LSU was important. Essentially flipping high three-star defensive back Yaheim Riley from Houston was crucial since he's an Austin kid. But the biggest commitment of the month came from four-star athlete Jermaine Bishop Jr. since he's such a phenomenal athlete. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH TEXAS FANS AT UCLA UCLA went local, regional and national in the month of May to fill out half its recruiting class. Washington once led for four-star defensive lineman Anthony Jones but the Bruins not only closed the gap but got him to commit. UCLA went to powerhouse Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco for three-star linebacker Matthew Muasau. Massive three-star tight end Camden Jensen from Littleton (Colo.) Heritage picked the Bruins. And then former SMU pledge Yahya Gaad, a three-star defensive end out of tiny Medina (Tenn.) South Gibson jumped on board, too. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH UCLA FANS AT USC USC has 27 commitments, the No. 1 class in the country and maybe no team had a better May than the Trojans. It was capped off by beating Georgia for four-star tight end Mark Bowman from Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei. Five-star cornerback Elbert Hill, tops at the position nationally, chose the Trojans over Ohio State and others. Those were the two biggest but other big additions included four-star offensive lineman Keenyi Pepe, four-star edge rusher Shaun Scott, receiver Luc Weaver and linebacker Taylor Johnson. Nation's No. 1 Player Calls Out ‘False Narrative' After Miami Commitment
Class of 2026 five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell is headed to Miami after committing to the Hurricanes over Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State on Tuesday. Cantwell (6-foot-7.5, 300 pounds) ranks as the nation's No. 1 player by both On3 and Rivals. He plays for Nixa (Missouri) High School, where he earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors in December. Advertisement The anticipation surrounding Cantwell's decision began to heat up in recent weeks, with the consensus belief, according to industry experts, that the elite tackle would end up at Georgia. Miami, however, wasn't counted out of the race. Head coach Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes reportedly offered Cantwell the most lucrative NIL package worth around $2 million, according to On3's Pete Nakos last week. "Sources have said that Miami has the most lucrative first-year deal on the table, sitting around the $2 million mark," Nakos wrote on May 7. After announcing his pledge to Miami, Cantwell spoke with reporters and called out the "false narrative" that money was a factor in his decision. Nixa High School offensive tackle and Miami Hurricanes commit Jackson Papes/Springfield News-Leader / USA TODAY NETWORK "Well, I think my response to it is that it's not the same narrative that people like Pete Nakos are pushing right now," Cantwell said via Dawgnation. "I think there's just a false narrative that that's why I'm choosing (Miami)." Advertisement Leading up to his commitment, Cantwell revealed that Miami was recruiting him the "hardest,"and the potential development he could receive under Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal was a key factor. Cantwell doubled-down on that belief when sharing his insight on Tuesday. "I think relationships won out with Miami," he said. "That's what kind of did it for me. They spent the most time with me – they put the most effort into recruiting me." When pressed again on the NIL situation, Cantwell pushed back on the narrative that Miami went above and beyond with its offer and acknowledge that his agent Drew Rosenhaus has been responsible in negotiating for fair compensation from each of his top schools. Advertisement "I've got a lot of skin in the game with all these schools, as far as getting represented by Drew and making sure that I'm going to be fairly compensated," he said. "And I think that every school has done a good job with being accommodating to that, and I think that anyone that would say otherwise of how I've done my recruitment has been misled." Where Georgia football's 2026 recruit class ranks
Where Georgia football's 2026 recruit class ranks The Georgia Bulldogs have been recruiting top prospects in the class of 2026 hard over the past couple of months. June is a critical time in recruiting and is when players take official visits and begin deciding where they will commit. Georgia's biggest addition in the class of 2026 came on May 5 when five-star quarterback Jared Curtis committed to Georgia. Eight other recruits have committed Georgia with four on offense and four on defense. 247Sports, On3 and Rivals all have varying opinions and rankings for the Georgia Bulldogs' 2026 recruiting class. How do all of the top recruiting sites rank the Bulldogs? 247 Sports: No. 16, 3rd in SEC This one is the lowest ranking of the bunch. Georgia has one five-star, six four-stars, and two three-stars. They're one of just four teams in the top 16 to have a five-star recruit. Ohio State has two of them (Chris Henry Jr., WR, and Blaine Bradford, S), LSU earned a commitment from Tristen Keys, and Miami recently won the Jackson Cantwell sweepstakes. 247Sports uses a two part process in scoring their recruiting classes based on both a rating and a comparison to the top recruit. On3 Industry: No. 5, 2nd in SEC Georgia leapfrogs past several teams in On3's rankings compared to 247Sports. They vault over Texas A&M and that's with Seven Cloud not included in the On3 database. On3 values the average commitment ranking more than the total number of commitments. There are no changes to the player ratings mentioned above, other than Cloud not ranked. Rivals: tied No. 11, 3rd in SEC On Rivals, Georgia has one five-star, seven four-stars, and one three-star. That is because S Kealan Jones is considered a four-star in Rivals. It results in a bump up of Georgia's score, tying the Bulldogs with the Oregon Ducks at No. 11.

No. 1 College Football Recruit Sends Clear Message After Declining Georgia
Jackson Cantwell, the nation's No. 1 overall recruit for the Class of 2026, surprised many on Tuesday when he announced his commitment to the University of Miami. In the process, he spurned heavy favorites Georgia and Oregon for what he described as 'the best situation for me to grow and develop, not only on the field as an offensive lineman but as a person'. Advertisement On3's Hayes Fawcett also noted how Cantwell credited head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line guru Alex Mirabal, whom he called the best developer of offensive linemen in college football, as the driving force behind his decision. Standing at 6-foot-8 in and weighing in around 315 pounds, Cantwell has dominated both the football field and the shot-put circle at Nixa High School in Missouri. In 2024, he set a national sophomore record with a 74.975-ft throw and earned Gatorade Missouri Player of the Year honors in both football and track & field. Rated a five-star by On3, 247Sports, and Rivals, and even carrying On3's highest 'Plus+' designation, Cantwell was the most coveted lineman in the country. Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart.© John David Mercer-Imagn Images Miami, which finished the 2024 season 10-3 under Cristobal, saw its campaign end in heartbreak fashion with a 42-41 loss to No. 18 Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Advertisement Despite that setback, the Hurricanes climbed as high as No. 4 in the polls during the regular season behind Heisman finalist quarterback Cam Ward. Cantwell's commitment marks a seismic shift in the college football landscape, signaling that Miami is back in the national title conversation.
