Orioles' Gary Sanchez exits with apparent injury vs. Braves

The post Orioles' Gary Sanchez exits with apparent injury vs. Braves appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Baltimore Orioles have been trying to climb back into relevance in the American League East after a brutal start to the season. However, injuries behind the plate may prevent the team from coming all the way back and approaching the .500 mark. Advertisement Gary Sanchez, who had been forced into the Orioles lineup after injuries to Adley Rutschman (oblique), Maverick Handley (concussion) and Chadwick Tromp (back) , was forced to leave Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves after making a tag play at the plate. Sanchez was replaced by Jacob Stallings after experiencing knee pain. Sanchez has been known for his ability to hit with power throughout his career. He is hitting .236 this season with 4 home runs and 25 runs batted in while playing in a backup role for the Orioles. However, he has struggled defensively throughout his career. He has played in 11 major league seasons — including 7 with the New York Yankees — and he has often struggled to catch the ball or keep low pitches in front of him. While he has demonstrated a strong arm on occasion, his defensive play has been a major liability. Orioles are dependent on Rutschman Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images The Orioles have been in last place in the American League East throughout the season. They have been a playoff team in each of the past two seasons, and they appeared to be solid contenders before the start of the season. Advertisement However, the team struggled badly out of the gate and they found themselves buried in the division. Recent injuries at the catching position have robbed them of Rutschman, who has been an All-Star twice in his career and has also won a Silver Slugger. Rutschman was not having a productive season before he went on the Injured List. Rustschman is slashing .227/.319/.372 with 8 home runs and just 20 runs batted in during his 68 games in the Baltimore lineup. The Orioles need a healthy and productive Rutschman to serve as an anchor in their lineup if the team is going to come close to reaching its potential. Orioles acquire Alex Jackson from Yankees after Gary Sánchez becomes their 4th catcher on IL

ATLANTA — The Baltimore Orioles acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday after Gary Sánchez became their fourth catcher on the injured list. Sánchez left Saturday night's game against Atlanta with right knee pain and an MRI revealed a sprain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Baltimore, which has 14 players on the IL, sent the Yankees international signing bonus pool allocation and a player to be named or cash. Two-time All-Star Adley Rutschman has not played since June 19 because of a left oblique strain, Maverick Handley has been on the concussion IL since a collision at the plate with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. on June 22 and Chadwick Tromp hasn't played since June 30 because of a lower back strain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Jacob Stallings, who replaced Sánchez in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Braves in 10 innings, and Jackson, who was with the team for Sunday's game in Atlanta, will form the restructured depth chart at catcher. Stallings' contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. Mansolino said he is confident Jackson and Stallings, who started on Sunday, have the experience needed 'to quickly catch up and make themselves an asset.' Jackson, 29, hit .226 with 10 homers in 44 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He made his major league debut with Atlanta in 2019 and also has played for Miami and Milwaukee. 'Obviously you have a whole lot of time in the big leagues now with multiple teams,' Mansolino said, adding the Yankees are a 'very forward-thinking organization.' Infielder Jorge Mateo, who last played June 6 due to left elbow inflammation, was transferred to the 60-day IL to clear a roster spot for Jackson. ___ AP MLB:

Back-to-back RBI doubles lift Orioles over Braves in 10 innings

July 5 - Ramon Laureano and Jacob Stallings delivered run-scoring doubles in the 10th inning to help the visiting Baltimore Orioles rally for three runs and defeat the Atlanta Braves 9-6 on Saturday. Laureano, who finished last season with the Braves, broke the tie with a double against reliever Rafael Montero (0-1) that scored automatic runner Jordan Westburg. After Ryan O'Hearn was intentionally walked, Stallings drove in both runners with a double to left. Felix Bautista (1-1) earned the win and Yennier Cano threw a perfect 10th to earn his first save. The Orioles improved to 3-3 in extra innings this season while Atlanta dropped to 6-3. Neither starter registered a decision. Atlanta's Aaron Bummer made the first start of his major league career, lasting 2 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on two hits -- both homers -- while striking out five. Baltimore starter Dean Kremer pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while fanning three. The game saw four lead changes and three ties. The Braves scored in the first when Austin Riley clubbed a 429-foot homer to center, his 13th home run of the season. Baltimore smacked two homers in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Tyler O'Neill crushed a 445-foot solo shot, his third of the year and first since April 13, and Jordan Westburg followed with a 461-foot two-run shot for his ninth of the season. Atlanta tied the game in the third on Matt Olson's 17th home run of the year. The Orioles took a 5-3 lead in the fourth when Colton Cowser hit a 426-foot two-run homer off left-hander Dylan Dodd. It was Cowser's eighth homer and first against a southpaw. The Braves tied the game with two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Olson and a run-scoring double by Riley. Olson was thrown out at the plate, but Baltimore catcher Gary Sanchez was injured and left the game the next inning with right knee pain. Atlanta loaded the bases against Scott Blewett in the sixth but only managed one run on Jurickson Profar's infield grounder to take a 6-5 lead. The Orioles tied the game in the seventh against Austin Cox on Jackson Holliday's RBI single. --Field Level Media
