Police increase traffic enforcement in Rio Rancho school zones
RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Drivers without seat belts, using the phone and going too fast, those are just some of the problems police in Rio Rancho now said they're cracking down on by cranking up enforcement at school zones. Officers swarmed Cielo Azul Elementary School on Tuesday, where neighbors and parents said drivers are getting out of control near hundreds of school kids. 'This is not a problem with one school, this is not a problem with one school district, this is across the board, everybody is in such a hurry these days that we're forgetting let's bring it down to the basics,' said Captain Jacquelynn Reedy, Rio Rancho Police Department. The operation started just last week at Cielo Azul Elementary school, where officers caught a parent speeding at 52 miles per hour, well over the limit of 15 miles per hour in a school zone. Crossing guards agree speed is a major problem. 'About 50 percent of people will see me and take that into consideration and they do slow down, unfortunately the other 50 are in too much of hurry to care,' said Amanda Lacey, crossing guard for Cielo Azul and Colinas Del Norte Elementary. 'Unfortunately, a lot of the parents are in a rush to drop off their kids, rush to get to work,' said Lacey. Aside from speeding, police said they've also seen a lot of kids who aren't buckled up and drivers distracted on their phones. 'We counted 36 unrestrained children, and we were standing in these medians right here,' said Reedy. For now, officers are giving out warnings, which they said have been effective so far, but Rio Rancho police said it will start issuing hefty tickets in the coming weeks. While officers were watching at Cielo Azul Elementary on Tuesday, police said they'll be rotating around to other elementary, middle, and high schools in the coming weeks. The minimum fine for violating the speed limit in a school crossing zone is $150. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
