25 editor-approved summer bags with a city-to-beach appeal

Time to swap your leather totes for chic city-to-beach summer bags that are equal parts vacation-ready and everyday-appropriate. It's a versatile hero piece that deserves a permanent place in your rotation this season. Make the most of your investment purchase this summer with a sculptural bag that effortlessly blends a beachy, artisanal mood with a polished, city-chic sensibility. Think hand-woven details, earthy materials, artisanal craftsmanship, sculptural hardware, elevated finishes, and refined shapes that transition seamlessly from poolside lounging to city strolling. Don't shy away from unique silhouettes and unexpected materials. Think canvas and mesh trimmed with leather, bold shapes softened by natural weaves, and bags that offer both aesthetic appeal and practical prowess. Case in point: Savette's mesh reinterpretation of the 'Symmetry Pochette,' a minimal yet modern nod to summer texture, and Jacquemus' 'Rond Carré' bag, a playful but polished piece featuring wooden accents and sculptural curves. Opt for fabrics that feel synonymous with summer—raffia, crochet, mesh, or canvas—and style them with everything from breezy co-ords, lightweight tailoring, statement summer dresses, or even the classic jeans-and-white-tee ensemble. Look for designs that strike the perfect balance between form and function: roomy enough with hidden compartments and wide interiors to stow your daily and getaway essentials, yet elegant enough to complement your day-to-day wardrobe, making these the perfect companions for your airport sprints, office days, and leisurely afternoons by the sea. Jacquemus unveils takeover at Monte-Carlo Beach Club

French fashion house Jacquemus has teamed up with the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer for a seasonal collaboration with the Monte-Carlo Beach Club. Running through October 7, the activation marks Jacquemus' first full-scale hospitality integration in Monte-Carlo. At the centre of the collaboration is a reimagining of the Beach Club's historic pier and Pool Café, now styled in Jacquemus' signature palette of banana yellow, coconut milk white, and graphic black stripes. The visual identity, drawn directly from the brand's 'La Croisière' collection presented in January 2025, is applied to sunbeds, parasols, beach towels, and café furnishings, creating a cohesive and highly Instagrammable guest experience. In addition to the design transformation, two exclusive Jacquemus boutiques have opened within the Beach Club. The boutique interiors feature a drawing by Renoir, another by Matisse, complemented by furniture and books that evoke the Provence region so beloved by the designer. The activation is part of a broader evolution at Monte-Carlo Beach, which has recently undergone several strategic upgrades, including the Michelin-star recognition of its Elsa restaurant, the launch of new padel courts, and upcoming restaurant openings.

True couture doesn't need stage: Designer Gaurav Gupta after Halle Berry skips his gown owing to new Cannes rule

We remain proud of the vision we created together, says celebrated Indian designer Gaurav Gupta after Cannes jury member Halle Berry had to pass over wearing his gown at the film gala's opening ceremony owing to updated dress code regulations. At the opening presser of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday (May 14, 2025), Ms. Berry said she was supposed to wear a dress designed by Mr. Gupta but couldn't opt for it because "the train is too big." The festival updated its dress policy on the eve of its 2025 edition, stating "nudity" and "voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train" are prohibited on the red carpet. Mr. Gupta said his teams had been working closely with Ms. Berry and her stylist to bring "a special moment to life at Cannes." "While the gown couldn't be worn due to updated regulations around long trains, we remain proud of the vision we created together. True couture doesn't always need a stage; sometimes, just the intention is enough to ignite the imagination," Mr. Gupta told PTI when reached out for a comment on Ms. Berry skipping to wear his designs. The designer also shared a video of Ms. Berry's comments on his Instagram Story on Tuesday (May 14). "I had an amazing dress to wear tonight by Mr. Gupta, and I cannot wear it because the train is too big. I'm not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule," Ms. Berry says in the clip. She eventually appeared on the red carpet in a sleeveless dress with vertical black and white stripes from French fashion brand Jacquemus' summer-spring 2025 ready-to-wear collection. Mr. Gupta has previously designed Cannes looks for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mindy Kaling, and Aditi Rao Hydari. Last week, he dressed Bollywood actor Kiara Advani for her Met Gala debut.
