Romano: Arsenal contact Ligue 1 club over potential late defensive deal
Arsenal Make Initial Contact for Jeremy Jacquet Amid Centre-Back Planning French defender on Arsenal radar Arsenal are exploring defensive reinforcements, with French youth international Jeremy Jacquet now emerging as a potential long-term option. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners have made 'initial contact to show interest in French 19 year old centre back Jeremy Jacquet.' The player is, in fact, 20, and has just signed a contract extension with Rennes until June 2029. Jacquet, a product of Rennes' youth system, is the latest in a line of high-level talents to progress through the Ligue 1 club's academy, following in the footsteps of Eduardo Camavinga, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue. He featured 11 times in Ligue 1 last season, most of those appearances coming as starts in the second half of the campaign. Photo IMAGO Timing dependent on Emirates outgoings While Arsenal admire Jacquet's profile, the move is not believed to be imminent. Romano adds, 'He's on the list as option in case of exits this month… or eventually for 2026.' Photo IMAGO The club are monitoring the defender's development closely, but the next step could hinge on departures from the Emirates. Jakub Kiwior is one name attracting interest elsewhere, with the Poland international understood to be seeking more consistent minutes. Should Kiwior depart before the end of the window, it may accelerate Jacquet's potential arrival. Photo IMAGO Reinforcements continue across the pitch This summer has already seen an aggressive recruitment drive from Arsenal. First-team additions include Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera and Christian Norgaard. Talks are also ongoing for Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, with personal terms reportedly not an issue. The North London club are now aiming to negotiate Palace's valuation, which had stood at £68 million prior to the expiry of his release clause. Photo IMAGO If completed, Eze would mark signing number seven. Jacquet could follow, either now or in the medium term, as Arsenal continue to blend squad depth with long-term planning. Our View – EPL Index Analysis There is plenty to admire about Arsenal's ambition this summer, but the link to Jeremy Jacquet leaves questions. Not because the talent is in doubt, Rennes have a strong track record, but because it once again suggests reactive planning based on potential exits, rather than clear positional prioritisation. Jakub Kiwior deserves more minutes, and if he leaves, it would be logical to bring in a replacement. But Jacquet, with just 11 Ligue 1 appearances, feels like a player for development rather than immediate cover. Arsenal are still fighting on multiple fronts and cannot afford to be light at the back if injuries hit. It also raises a recurring concern among fans: are Arsenal collecting talent or building a squad that can push Liverpool and City to the wire? The signing of Mosquera already adds a raw, youthful option in defence. If Jacquet arrives too, will either of them be ready when it matters? Until outgoings are confirmed, this feels more like groundwork for the future. And while that has its place, clarity in the present is what will define this season.

Jeremy Jacquet responds to Arsenal transfer approach
Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet has turned down the chance to join Arsenal, according to reports in France. Arsenal have made clear their intentions after going another season without any silverware, spending in the region of £200million on six new signings across a busy summer transfer window. But the Gunners' hierarchy, spearheaded by new sporting director Andrea Berta, are determined to further bolster Mikel Arteta's squad by capturing Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, as well as a central defender, before the deadline. Though Valencia centre-half Cristhian Mosquera completed a £13m switch to the Emirates last month, club bosses set their sights on Rennes' Jacquet amid growing uncertainty over Jakub Kiwior's future. But French publication Foot Mercato claim Arsenal's pursuit has come to nothing, with Jacquet opting to decline a proposed transfer to north London in order to continue his development at Roazhan Park. Rennes also have no intention of losing Jacquet, who is tied into a contract until June 2029. Widely regarded to be among the most promising young defenders in French football, Jacquet completed a loan move to Ligue 2 outfit Clermont last summer with a view to securing guaranteed first-team minutes. However, Jacquet earned a recall to Rennes midway through last term and went on to establish himself as regular starter at the heart of Habib Beye's defence, making 11 league appearances for the club in the second half of the campaign. Jacquet caught the eye playing in both a three-man and a four-man defence for Rennes. He also provided cover at full-back towards the back-end of the season. After signing a contract extension earlier this summer, the versatile France Under-21 international said he was 'very happy' to continue his journey with Rennes and 'achieve better results' next season. 'I'm very happy to be extending my contract with my club,' he said. 'The season went by very quickly, I played quickly after my return from loan in the winter and I think I played some good games. More Trending 'The aim now is to get back to work and achieve better results next season.' Meanwhile, Rennes' sporting director, Loic Desire, told the club's official website: 'Jeremy perfectly embodies the club's desire to build its project around Rennes' training. 'He was present at the Gambardella final this weekend, proof of his attachment to the Rouge et Noir academy. 'He has great qualities, particularly athleticism, and exudes a great deal of confidence and strength for his age. We hope that he will go very far and continue to progress with Rennes.' Arsenal in talks for seventh summer signing to replace £17.6m star
Arsenal have made 'initial contact' with Rennes to discuss a move for highly-rated centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, according to reports. Following a subdued start to the summer transfer window, Arsenal have bolstered Mikel Arteta's squad with six key signings. The likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke have all arrived at the Emirates Stadium to strengthen a squad that has finished second in the Premier League for the past three seasons. Despite the heavy investment so far this summer, Arsenal are interested in further deals before the summer transfer deadline, most notably looking to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. Arsenal have also expressed interest in signing highly-rated defender Jacquet and made contact with French club Rennes over a deal according to Fabrizio Romano. It is claimed the Gunners have made 'initial contact' with Rennes, who finished 12th in Ligue 1 last season, to declare their interest in Jacquet. Arsenal will look to bring Jacquet to north London this month if current defenders move on, but if not they have already indicated they will move for the 20-year-old next summer. Arteta has his eyes on defensive reinforcements as his 2023 signing Jakub Kiwior continues to be linked with a move away from the club. It was reported over the weekend that 'several clubs' were keen to sign Kiwior, who made 30 appearances for the Gunners last season. While the Poland international has struggled for starts since his £17.6m move from Spezia, Arteta would prefer to keep him as he is viewed as an important back-up player. Kiwior has been heavily linked with a return to Italy and there is also a chance Oleksandr Zinchenko will leave Arsenal this summer. While only making 12 league appearances for Rennes, towering centre-back Jacquet is rated as one of the most promising defenders in France. He has represented his country throughout the youth levels and helped France's U19 side reach the final of the Euros last year by being named in the Team of the Tournament. Jacquet spent the first-half of last season on loan at Ligue 2 side Clermont before being recalled by Rennes in January. In a statement at the end of last season, Rennes said: 'Recalled from Clermont in the winter window, where he had been on loan since January 2024, Jeremy Jacquet has established himself with confidence in the Rennes defence and raised his game to the level of Ligue 1. 'Playing in a three-man or four-man defence, or even as a full-back, Jeremy has put in a number of convincing performances for SRFC, demonstrating his ability to adapt on the pitch. 'On Monday, Jeremy Jacquet signed a new contract with Stade Rennais F.C. that will run until 2029. With this extension, the club is reaffirming its confidence in a player who carries the Red and Black DNA.' Arnaud Pouille, chief executive of Rennes, added: 'We're delighted to see Jeremy extend his contract. It's a strong signal for the club, which validates a project built with its academy. 'Jeremy is a very intelligent, talented young man who is well surrounded by people. He will continue to progress with the Rouge et Noir. I'd also like to thank his family, with whom we have an excellent relationship.' Loic Desire, sporting director of the French club, said: 'Jeremy perfectly embodies the club's desire to build its project around Rennes' training. 'He was present at the Gambardella final this weekend, proof of his attachment to the Rouge et Noir academy. Chicken sandwich hotspot opening first S.F. location
Gregoire, a Berkeley favorite for French-influenced chicken sandwiches and lunch, is expanding into San Francisco this year. Owner Gregoire Jacquet confirmed to the Chronicle he is opening a franchise location at 1300 Ninth Ave., a former Jamba juice shop at the intersection with Irving Street. Inside, the menu will include favorites such as Jacquet's potato puffs, salads and more. Plans are to open in November. 'I'm very excited,' Jacquet said. 'San Francisco is where I first landed, so it's near and dear to my heart.' Jacquet has been working to franchise Gregoire for roughly three years, and has plans for more locations. To help, he has leased a commissary kitchen in Emeryville to prepare all ingredients for each future outpost. The idea is to offer items that change each quarter but to reduce cooking and labor as much as possible for operators: just assemble and serve. 'It's the best way of having consistency. You don't need chefs, and it helps keep the footprint small,' he explained. Jacquet arrived in the Bay Area from his native France in 1989 with a background in fine dining. His first local job in the industry was under famed chef Jacky Robert at his restaurant Amelio's, later cooking at the San Francisco Ritz-Carlton. (He also cooked at the luxury hotel's locations in Boston and Puerto Rico before settling down in the Bay Area.) He later opened the first Gregoire alongside his wife Tara in 2003. While some were skeptical of the fine dining chef turning to a casual model, the potato puffs and sandwiches won people over. 'I remember a guy telling me it's never going to work. But we're still here after 23 years,' Jacquet said. Jacquet has expanded in the past. The couple ran a second location in Oakland from 2006 through 2017. They chose to close the location, which served as a commissary for the two restaurants, due to burnout and to spend more time with their children. 'Now that my kids are gone, my wife and I decided we need to grow again,' he said. This isn't the Gregoire brand's first foray into the city. A Gregoire food truck serving sandwiches and potato puffs is regularly stationed outside Salesforce Tower and Levi's Plaza during the midweek lunch hour, and it often makes other appearances around the Bay Area.
