Sharks vs Bulls: Siya Kolisi fired up for Loftus showdown

Based on the heavy criticism directed their way, you could be forgiven for thinking the Sharks have had a poor season in the United Rugby Championship, but Springbok skipper Siya Kolisi said all that matters is putting in a strong performance in their semi-final at Loftus Versfeld, in Pretoria, on Saturday. The Sharks finished the regular season third on the 16-team table, behind only the Bulls and Leinster. The Sharks scraped through their quarter-final against Munster, winning in a rare penalty shootout. One of the reasons there's been much criticism of the Sharks is that they have no fewer than 12 Springboks in their squad. Though regular captain Eben Etzebeth has been ruled out for the semi, it's not much of a disruption for Kolisi to take the captaincy reins. His first point of order was batting aside unwarranted jabs at his side. "I know this is a massive topic, there are many reasons why we haven't played to our full potential. A lot of people are looking at the results and the way we play,' Kolisi told "The most important thing is we are winning, and we know there will be a day where we will play well. We have a lot of confidence [in beating the Bulls] as our team has done this before. We have beaten the Bulls three times this season, but we know all of that means nothing and it will be a new fixture this weekend. We have a lot of confidence heading into the match.' During the penalty shootout with Munster, Sharks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrickse mysteriously lay prone on the field with apparent cramp after taking his kick. He was then seen winking at Munster's Jack Crowley in a clear act of gamesmanship, which sparked outrage from the visitors and on social media. Kolisi, though, gave his full backing to Hendrickse following the incident. "There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Jaden did there. These things happen in rugby, and other teams have done similar things before. Sometimes people also say things to me in a game, and the onus is on the person and what they do when they are provoked." "There are players in Jack's team [Munster] who also do the exact same thing to other players from the opposition. It's just that this time on the day, it was heard from the referee's mic. We stand with Jaden!" @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

‘Nice to help people out': CEO of EMS company empowers local EMT's to provide basic needs

EMTs and paramedics are trained to respond to medical emergencies. In nine communities along Rt. 495 in the Merrimac Valley, they're now empowered to help people with a much wider range of problems. David Daly, the CEO of Pridestar Trinity EMS, created a program called 'The Give.' 'We met people in really difficult circumstances and a lot of them didn't actually need medical treatment,' he said. 'They were in a challenging situation. We'd notice they didn't have a jacket, or they haven't eaten in a couple of days, or they needed a new pair of shoes.' As someone who started his career as an EMT, Daly knows his workers don't have a lot of extra money. 'So we started 'The Give' and it's a program that we give our staff the ability to go out and buy a meal for a person that needs it, who hasn't eaten, or a buy new pair of shoes. . . ultimately, it's at the discretion of the employees to choose what fits and they're allowed to do it without even being questioned.' Jaden Maldonado, a 4th grader from Dracut, was surprised when two EMT's presented him with a new bike. 'I was like, oh yea!' he said. EMT Kevin Gustafson said, 'We got called to an auto-pedestrian accident, car versus bike. So, we got to the scene, and it was obvious he had had a little accident. He was all bumped up, little bumps and bruises, nothing major. He was more shaken up and scared that it had happened and his bike was ruined.' Gustafson and his partner Billy Krikoris knew a bike was a big deal for a 4th grader and that Jaden's family would be hard pressed to replace his mangled set of wheels. So that's when they decided to use The Give and buy Jaden a new bike. 'Obvious, we primarily focus on the medical aspect first, but if we, while we're doing everything, notice hey, like they could use something like this, that's just something we keep it in the back of our minds. After they're out of the hospital and whatever, we can see if we can help them out with it,' explained Krikoris. This program comes at a time when the EMTs say they're seeing more people in need. 'The city is definitely busy,' said Sam Coutu as he cruised the streets of Lowell. For example, they buy a lot of tents for homeless people. 'Pillows, just stuff they need to be more comfortable in the elements.' Coutu also said they aid many senior citizens in the area. 'So, like an old woman, her house is really hot and she's lethargic and we notice it's hot in the house, we'll try to buy her an air conditioner. We notice someone's fridge isn't working, we can try to do something about that.' Krikoris added, 'It's nice to help people out, especially when they're already in a bad place.' Daly believes this program has a positive impact on his staff. He says they see many troubling situations in the course of their work, and this empowers them to step in and help – no questions asked. Siya Kolisi addresses ‘winkgate': It's all part of rugby's entertainment

Siya Kolisi says it is time to get over the wink of Jaden Hendrikse after it caused quite the debate in the aftermath of the Sharks' victory over Munster this past Saturday. Image: BackpagePix Let's get over it. It's rugby, it's entertainment. That is the short and sweet answer Siya Kolisi gave when asked about the Jaden Hendrikse 'Winkgate' fallout after the Sharks beat Munster in the quarter-finals of the United Rugby Championship (URC) on Saturday in Durban. Hendrikse cramped up and was treated while the place-kicking shootout was on. With the Durban side leading the kicks after Rory Scannell failed to slot one for the visitors, Hendrikse pulled out a bit of gamesmanship with Jack Crowley. While being treated by medics, he was lying on his back and looked Crowley dead in the face ahead of Crowley's kick and gave him a cheeky wink. The wink and blowout of Crowley caused quite a fallout, especially from Ireland supporters. The Sharks went on to win the place-kick contest 6-4 after the playoff ended 24-all. They will now face the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in the semi-finals on Saturday evening. 'We stand with Jaden,' Kolisi said. 'Jaden is competitive and there was banter everywhere in the game. We've seen it from players all over the world. It's a normal day, and these things happen. People can say what they like, but there was banter between two players, and that's all there is. That is who Jaden is.

Siya Kolisi comes to defence of teammate

In the aftermath of the Sharks' nail-biting URC quarter-final win over Munster, one of the unexpected fallouts has been the outcry over some so-called gamesmanship from Jaden Hendrikse. During a decisive goal-kicking 'shoot out', Hendrikse collapsed to the ground after cramping, but while lying on the ground, he gave a cheeky wink to opposing kicker Jack Crowley. In what has turned into quite a bizarre backlash, there have been numerous reactions accusing Hendrikse of bad sportsmanship and even faking his cramp despite imagery clearly showing his calf going into spasm. There have been a variety of differing opinions on the incident, and notably, captain Siya Kolisi did not hold back when asked about the incident on Tuesday. 'We stand with Jaden,' he said. 'Jaden is competitive and there had been banter throughout the game. It's normal and these things happen. People can say what they like, but there was banter between two players and that's all there is [to it]. Jaden knows that we back him all the way. You can see he cramped, there was definitely cramping. 'People must just get over it,' the Springbok skipper added. 'It's rugby, it's entertainment. That's what the fans want. Players want to celebrate, do what they do and be themselves, and we've all got our own ways of dealing with stuff on the field. 'Come on, we can't box each other and all be the same. We're not robots, we're human beings. Sometimes we will take it and sometimes we will give it.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
