Jagadish, Shwetha Menon Among Leading Names For Key AMMA Positions
Last Updated: Jagadish and Shwetha Menon are likely contenders for AMMA president. Mohanlal is likely to skip the contest. Baburaj and Joy Mathew are vying for general secretary. With Thursday marking the last date for filing nominations for the 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), the distribution of nearly 110 nomination forms indicates an intense electoral contest ahead. AMMA currently has around 500 members. Speaking to IANS, popular comedian and character actor Jagadish confirmed that he will contest for the post of president. 'In the outgoing committee, I was one of the two vice-presidents. When the fresh elections were announced, I hoped either Kunchacko Boban or senior actor Vijayaraghavan would take over as president. But since both opted out, I decided to step in. I have already started reaching out to members for support," he said. Jagadish also noted that actor Shwetha Menon is likely to enter the race for the president's post. Meanwhile, actor Raveendran, known for his villain roles, said that incumbent president Mohanlal has clearly conveyed that he will not contest this time. 'Mohanlal has expressed his reluctance to continue, as he has been unfairly blamed for the actions of others. This has deeply hurt him," Raveendran said. He added that he, too, has collected nomination forms and that with the deadline set for 5 p.m. today, more clarity will emerge soon. Actors Baburaj and Joy Mathew are among those vying for the key post of general secretary. Unlike previous elections, there appears to be no official panel contesting as a bloc this time. Most candidates are expected to run independently. Mohanlal and his team were elected in 2024 for a three-year term. However, the explosive revelations in the Hema Committee report last year triggered a crisis in AMMA. Matters escalated when the secretary and actor Siddique resigned after being accused of misconduct by a former actress. Following Siddique's resignation, more allegations against other actors surfaced. Subsequently, Mohanlal announced his unwillingness to continue, prompting the entire 17-member executive committee to step down. An ad hoc committee led by Mohanlal has been overseeing affairs since then, until fresh elections could be scheduled. At AMMA's recently held annual general body meeting, it was decided that a new executive will be elected through a democratic process on August 15. The final list of candidates will be known by July 31, the last date for withdrawal of nominations. If multiple candidates remain in the fray, voting will be held on August 15. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 16:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. BJP MLA questioned as prime accused flees to Dubai
Bengaluru: BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraju, who has been named as the fifth accused in a rowdy sheeter murder case, appeared before the police in Bengaluru on Wednesday for a second round of questioning. The development has gained significance as sources reveal the police have found links between the main accused, Jagadish, and the BJP MLA. Basavaraju had also approached the High Court, seeking to quash the FIR filed against him. The court had declined to grant him immunity from arrest and directed him to cooperate with the investigation. He had appeared before the police last Saturday, also, when he was questioned for over three hours. Police sources further stated that the main accused, Jagadish alias Jagga, is still absconding. Investigations have revealed that he switched off his mobile phone on the day of the murder, left Bengaluru by car, reached Chennai, and then flew to Dubai. A police team from Bengaluru is en route to Dubai to gather more details. The police have already obtained relevant information from the immigration department. They suspect Jagadish may be hiding in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah. A lookout notice is being considered, pending approval from senior officials. So far, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the murder case. Byrathi Basavaraj represents the K.R. Puram Assembly constituency in Bengaluru. He was once a close associate of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah before joining the BJP through 'Operation Lotus.' His younger brother, Byrathi Suresh, is currently a close aide to CM Siddaramaiah and serves as the Minister for Urban Development and Town Planning. Basavaraj has been booked under murder charges and named as a fifth accused in connection with the killing of Shivaprakash alias Biklu Shiva, who was hacked to death in front of his residence on the night of July 15. The Bharatinagar police in Bengaluru have registered an FIR against the MLA. The complaint was filed by the victim's mother, Vijayalaxmi. The case took a new twist after the victim's mother stated that she never named the MLA in her police complaint. Speaking to the media last Thursday, Vijayalaxmi said, 'I have not given any complaint to the police against BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj. I have not named any accused persons. I was tense and overwhelmed after the murder of my son. The police themselves have added his name.' The Karnataka BJP has strongly objected to the police action against BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj in connection with the murder.

I don't know who Bikkalu Shiva is, where the property is, or any other details. But without any reason, my name has been included in the FIR and I got to know about it only through the media. I will fight against it legally, and I'll contact the home minister to explain to him my innocence. I'm not sure if it's a political conspiracy or another reason. I will appear before police if they summon me for questioning MLA Basavaraja

Devanahalli: Landlords became farm labourers after losing their lands to projects
Jagadish, a farmer from Polanahalli of Devanahalli taluk, never faced any major financial issues, though his undivided large family had just 3.5 acres. He was an enterprising and hardworking farmer who cultivated multiple crops, including vegetables and flowers on his fertile land besides rearing cows and sheep. Proximity to Bengaluru market too ensured remunerative prices for his crops. He was excited when the government set in motion the acquisition of 2 acres of his land for an Aerospace Park, as the offer was ₹1.10 crore per acre as compensation, against the then prevailing rate of ₹60 to ₹70 lakh per acre. He got the compensation amount sometime in 2018. But now, seven years later, he is a financially devastated man. From the earlier social status of being a landlord, he has been reduced to working as a farm labourer along with his wife to take care of his family. 'I finally got a pittance as the list of legal heirs to the family property grew, and I also had to pay bribes to the tune of 20%-25% to get the compensation. The prices around my land that was acquired by the government, have touched ₹8 crore per acre now. Forget buying farm land, I cannot even afford to buy a residential plot in my village now,' lamented Mr. Jagadish. The Hindu met him during the media visit organised by the protesting farmers' group to the villages in Channarayapatna hobli of Devanahalli taluk, where land is proposed to be acquired for the second phase of the Aerospace Park. Second blow Now the government is set to acquire the remaining 1.5 acres of Mr. Jagadish's land. But strongly resisting this, he declared, 'I would rather die than give up land again. This is not just land, but our livelihood and family's future.' Mr. Jagadish's story is not unique but that of many farmers who lost their lands earlier in these areas. Given the precedent of how land losers have suffered, other farmers in 13 villages of Channarayapatna hobli, where lands to the tune of 1,777 acres are set to be acquired in the second phase of the project, have decided against parting with their land. Ramesh Cheemachanahalli, whose land too is set to be acquired and who is one of the activists who played a key role in organising land losing farmers to stage a marathon protest since April 4, 2022, said, 'Unlike other areas in the State, Devanahalli has not just got fertile lands and conducive weather, but also good agri market access, with several private companies buying farmers' produce directly from the farm. Taking away these lands is nothing but taking away the livelihoods and lives of farmers.' He says lands from about 650 families are set to be acquired. Endorsing his views, young farmer Pramod of Polanahalli says his joint family earns a net profit of about ₹12 lakh a year from six acres where it grows grapes, vegetables, and flowers, besides taking up animal husbandry. Pointing towards his house, tractor, and van being used to transport flowers to the market, he wonders whether he can continue to have a similar lifestyle if his lands are taken away. His fellow villager Veeranna, a former secretary of local milk producers' co-operative society of KMF, says the milk production in the village had already reduced by nearly 50% from the earlier 600 litres a day after huge parcels of lands were acquired for the project in the first phase. Choose judiciously The farmers in these villages collectively declare that they would not part with their lands even if the government increases compensation. 'The government should judiciously choose suitable land for acquisition for industrial purpose instead of picking fertile lands like ours,' they say. These farmers are anxiously waiting to know the outcome of the State Cabinet meeting on Wednesday and the meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday to decide their future course of action.
