5 takeaways from Day 1 of Broncos training camp

After a pair of acclimation days on Wednesday and Thursday, the Denver Broncos kicked off the first official day of training camp on Friday with about 800 fans in attendance (capacity has been reduced due to construction). Here are five quick takeaways following Day 1 of camp as we head into the weekend. 1. injury report: Wide receiver A.T. Perry (ankle; PUP) remains sidelined, and right tackle Mike McGlinchey was absent for the second straight day on Friday. Denver coach Sean Payton seemingly indicated that it's nothing to be concerned about. "He should be returning, I'm going to say, either tomorrow or Monday," Payton said. "We'll keep you posted. No announcements.' 2. Cornerback rotation: After getting reps as an outside cornerback earlier in the week, first-round draft pick Jahdae Barron lined up in the slot on Friday. Barron's versatility will be a great addition to Vance Joseph's secondary, and it improves depth at multiple positions because he's even capable of filling in at safety. "[T]here are a handful of guys that are going to dual train and there's a handful that would be outside," Payton said. "Every once in a while, you have a corner that can go to safety. There's a vision with each player relative to where we see him at. The flexibility certainly helps, especially on third down.' Payton noted that the team envisions Barron "starting off competing inside," but he's clearly capable of playing outside, too. 3. Troy Franklin's trending up: Multiple reporters after Friday's practice noted that Franklin had an impressive day. Payton also praised Franklin this spring, but after the first day of camp, the coach pushed back on potential Day 1 overreactions. 'We just started," Payton said when asked if Franklin's taking a step up in Year 2. "But do I think he has a chance to? [Yes.] I felt like we began to see that towards the latter part of last season. I'm looking forward to seeing him. He's had a real good offseason. It's just a little early to make headlines, 'Troy Franklin's making steps up.' He had a good day.' A good day. Just hold off on the headlines -- for now. 4. Que Robinson has also impressed: Robinson, the team's fourth-round pick in April's draft, is projected to begin his pro career primarily as a special teams player because the Broncos are so deep at outside linebacker. Robinson impressed this spring, though, and that seems to have carried over into training camp. "Que is coming on for sure," veteran Jonathon Cooper said Friday. "Definitely a big talent for us. I think he's going to be a great addition to the team." If Robinson continues this trend, the rookie pass rusher might end up getting more snaps on defense than initially expected. 5. Stay tuned for Monday: The pads aren't on yet, so it's hard to judge the running backs (and the trenches). Everything's different when players are wearing shorts and shirts. That will change when the pads arrive on Monday. "It's difficult for those guys, honestly," Payton said of the running backs taking reps without pads. "It's difficult for the offense and defensive lines. They're trying to do their jobs and to keep it safe. It becomes a little bit easier when we're in pads. I think up until then, it's difficult.' Denver is set to practice again on Saturday before a day off on Sunday. The team will have 13 total practices open to fans this summer (but tickets are required due to the limited capacity). Next week, the Broncos will have six straight days of practice as camp heats up. Stay tuned. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Broncos have two major items to cross off checklist before start of training camp

Less than two weeks out from the start of training camp, the Denver Broncos have yet to sign either of their top two draft picks to contracts. The Broncos will kick off training camp ahead of the 2025 season on Friday, July 25. To this point, first-round pick Jahdae Barron and second-round pick RJ Harvey remain unsigned. While several teams have yet to sign their second-round picks to a deal, the Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals are the only teams in the league to have gotten a new deal done with neither. Advertisement Though the situation between the Broncos and Barron is nowhere near as contentious as the one between the Bengals and their first-round pick, Shemar Stewart, it would still be in the best interest of the team to get a deal done soon. It would not be ideal to open camp without Barron and Harvey under contract, as every rep is precious, but that goes double for rookies. Guaranteed money — and how much of it — seems to be the hangup with these contracts. While there is nothing to suggest that the Broncos won't get these deals done before the start of camp, it has to be considered at least slightly concerning that it hasn't happened yet. Barron is expected to be a huge part of the Denver defense in year two. While he wasn't on the radar for the Broncos by many within the draft community, he fell to the team with the No. 20 overall pick in the draft and George Paton and Sean Payton couldn't turn that down. Advertisement In the second round, the Broncos selected Harvey despite many running backs who were rated higher still being on the board. That pick was made because Payton sees something in him that he feels many other front offices are overlooking. The point is, the team was excited to get these two players on the roster, so hammer out the details, work with them on good deals in guaranteed money and get signatures on those contracts. If that doesn't happen within the next two weeks, the Broncos will open camp without them. 10 NFL rookies you need to watch this season

The 2025 NFL Draft class is loaded with unique talent and potential stars. From prospects who play both sides of the ball to one of the most hyped running back prospects in recent history, these are the 10 first-year players who could make an immediate impact this season. Check Out: 10. Linebacker Jihaad Campbell: Philadelphia Eagles After undergoing shoulder surgery in the spring, many teams passed on the elite linebacker out of Alabama as he fell to the 31st pick. If Jihaad Campbell can stay healthy, he could be the steal of the draft for the Philadelphia Eagles. For a linebacker of his frame at around 240 pounds, he moves well from sideline to sideline and is a talented downhill threat. 9. Running back TreVeyon Henderson: New England Patriots Drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round, TreVeyon Henderson has a level of speed that could result in a house call every time he touches the ball. He will pair with Rhamondre Stevenson out of the backfield, but Stevenson struggled last season, and the rookie Henderson is the more versatile runner. He could emerge as a solid RB1 early in the season. Related: 8. Cornerback Jahdae Barron: Denver Broncos Jahdae Barron is an elite cornerback out of Texas. The Denver Broncos' 2025 first-round pick will be paired with the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Patrick Surtain II. This pick could turn into one of the best cornerback duos in the entire league, and their impact on the Broncos' secondary will be exciting to witness. 7. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka: Tampa Bay Buccaneers A proven slot receiver at Ohio State, Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Emeka Egbuka will fit right in behind veterans Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Egbuka holds the most receptions in Buckeyes football history with 205 career catches. He is a proven, reliable receiver with great hands and can turn into a consistent, high-volume NFL wideout. Read More: 6. Running back Omarion Hampton: Los Angeles Chargers Omarion Hampton's upside is limitless as he's a physical runner at 221 pounds, but also possesses explosive ability, running a 4.46 40 at the combine. Although he's currently listed as RB2 for the Los Angeles Chargers, it's believable he could become the franchise running back, given they selected him in the first round. 5. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan: Carolina Panthers The highest-ranked wide receiver in the draft, Tetairoa McMillan is a huge target for Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, and his 6-foot-4 frame should cause matchup problems for opposing defenses. McMillan is a perfect fit for Carolina's offense and will dominate 50/50 balls. He will be one of the most exciting rookies to watch. Read More: 4. Edge rusher Abdul Carter: New York Giants The best defensive player in the draft, Abdul Carter is a game-changer for the New York Giants. He's drawn comparisons to Micah Parsons with his ability to effectively pass rush or drop into coverage. 3. Running back Ashton Jeanty: Las Vegas Raiders One of the most hyped and accomplished running backs coming out of college in recent memory, Ashton Jeanty's 2,601 rushing yards in 2024 ranked second in NCAA history behind Barry Sanders for the most in a single season. Expectations for the Las Vegas Raiders rookie are sky high, and with his upside, Jeanty will be a must-watch player for fans throughout the league. Read More: 2. Wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter: Jacksonville Jaguars If there is any takeaway from Travis Hunter's time at Colorado, it's that he's an electric player to watch. The most versatile prospect in years, Hunter has All-Pro upside on both sides of the ball. Whether as a lockdown corner, slot receiver, or deep threat, his explosiveness ensures he will have an instant impact for the Jacksonville Jaguars. 1. Quarterback Cam Ward: Tennessee Titans Cam Ward's exceptional arm talent and mobility ensure that he will be a successful modern NFL quarterback. He led an electric offense at Miami and has the opportunity to turn the Tennessee Titans franchise around. His development will be one of the main storylines this upcoming season.
