Key dates to know for the Detroit Lions on the 2025-26 NFL calendar

Key dates to know for the Detroit Lions on the 2025-26 NFL calendar The NFL has released the official league calendar of key dates for the coming season. There are quite a few that are pertinent for the Detroit Lions as the team heads into its late-spring hiatus. July 15: Franchise tag deadline The Lions didn't use the franchise or transition tags on any free agents in 2025, so this doesn't really apply to Detroit. Late July: Training camp dates Teams are allowed to begin training camp 47 days prior to the date of their first regular-season game. The Lions get an exemption for this because they are playing in the Hall of Fame Game. The Lions will release the exact training camp dates to the public soon. July 31: Hall of Fame Game: Lions vs. Chargers in Canton, OH Detroit opens the preseason with an extra exhibition game, which is why the Lions' training camp report date is earlier than for all other teams besides the Chargers. More: Detroit Lions preseason schedule for 2025: Dates, times and opponents now set August 21-23: The final game of the preseason for all teams Detroit hosts the Houston Texans on August 23rd at 1 p.m. Aug 26: Roster cutdown deadline Rosters must be cut to 53 players by 4 p.m. August 27: Practice squad starts Waiver claims from the prior day's cuts are processed, and teams can form a 16-player practice squad (17 if a qualifying international player) once the waiver claims are completed. Aug 31: Final day of preseason training camp for all clubs The league officially shifts into regular-season mode on September 1st. September 23: Waiver claim changes The NFL waiver claim order changes from the final 2024 standings to the current NFL records, following the completion of Week 3 games. The current order is the same as the 2025 NFL Draft order (without trades), so Detroit is 28th. Post-Week 4: Injured players can return Players who began the season on the I.R. list or the NFI/PIP lists are eligible to be activated. November 4: NFL Trade Deadline The Lions were active at the 2024 deadline, acquiring Za'Darius Smith from the Browns. November 5th: Veteran waiver changes Following the trade deadline, all veterans with at least four accrued NFL seasons are subject to waiver claims if their team releases them. Before this time, those players are free to sign anywhere without restriction. January 5: Fifth-year option period begins For the Lions, this pertains to RB Jahmyr Gibbs and LB Jack Campbell. Note that the Lions can sign either player to an extension without exercising the fifth-year option. January 5th is also the deadline for underclassmen to declare their entrance into the 2026 NFL Draft class. Jan 10-12: Wild Card Weekend Jan 17-18: Divisional Playoffs Jan 25: AFC and NFC Championship Games February 8: Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium (Santa Clara, California) Here's hoping the Lions earn their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. February 17: Franchise tag period begins Business moves forward to the offseason, and teams become eligible to place the franchise tag on pending free agents. For Detroit, that (currently) includes players like Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams and Amik Robertson. February 23-March 2: NFL Scouting Combine The annual scouting extravaganza in Indianapolis is also typically the first chance to meet with GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell following the end of the Lions season. March 11: Free agency begins The legal tampering period begins on March 9th, with teams eligible to sign free agents beginning at 4 p.m. ET on the 11th. March 29-April 1: NFL league meeting This is the meeting where rule changes are voted upon, among other functions of the annual meeting in Phoenix. April 20: Offseason programs begin for teams with returning head coaches Barring something completely unforeseen on the coaching front, the Lions and Dan Campbell are permitted to begin the 2026 offseason program on April 20th. April 23-25: The 2026 NFL Draft Next year's draft is in Pittsburgh.

With NFL players allowed to play in 2028 Olympics, who would make the USA's flag football Dream Team?

And you thought the 1992 United States men's basketball team crushed the competition. The NFL's team owners approved a resolution on Tuesday that allows NFL players to participate in the 2028 Olympics in flag football. It would allow one player from each team, plus a designated international player, to play. Nothing against those international players, but USA vs. anyone in flag football would make the Dream Team vs. Angola look competitive. Advertisement The game of flag football is five on five, so let's pick the United States' 2028 Dream Team starting lineup for flag football using NFL players: Offense QB: Patrick Mahomes Lamar Jackson would have been the pick if running was allowed, but quarterbacks can't run in flag football. Jackson would still be a fine pick because he's a great passer too, but we'll go with Mahomes. Because nobody could go wrong picking Mahomes to be their quarterback. One underrated option: Jared Goff, who won last season's Pro Bowl Game's offensive MVP and a skills competition there. He's a perfect pocket distributor. But we can take only one player from each team and ... Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions runs upfield during the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl Games. (Photo by) (Perry Knotts via Getty Images) RB: Jahmyr Gibbs The quarterback can hand it off to a running back or throw, but the running back has to be an elusive threat out of the backfield with the ability to catch. Sorry Derrick Henry, you can't run over the poor defenders in this game. We've seen Gibbs absolutely dust NFL defenders in open space, and good luck to the German or French defender catching up to Gibbs. WR: Justin Jefferson We could try to get cute and make an argument like "Marvin Mims Jr. had the most separation in the NFL last season so he should be the pick," or "KaVontae Turpin would be the fastest receiver on the field" but let's be real. If nobody can cover Jefferson in the pros, nobody can cover him in the Olympics either. WR: Ja'Marr Chase See above. There could be some contrarian argument that this or that slot receiver would be better suited for flag football, or that Xavier Worthy's speed should be considered. You pick one of them, and then tell the NFL's triple crown winner he's not in the starting lineup. WR: Tyreek Hill Hill has made the NFL look like he's already playing flag football. There's some worry he didn't look like the same explosive player last season. But Hill is practically built for this game. Though it's tough to say no to players like Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr. and Nico Collins for the final starting spot. (Davis Long/Yahoo Sports) Defense Rusher: Micah Parsons In flag football, one player usually rushes, and Parsons will be just fine at that. His background as an off-ball linebacker at Penn State also helps a little bit. He gets a slight nod over T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett. An international quarterback seeing any of them bearing down might cause any of them to pass out. CB: Travis Hunter Yeah, he hasn't played an NFL game yet. But he wouldn't have any problem playing both ways in a flag football world. And his body control is already as good as anyone in the NFL already. Pity the poor defender trying to grab his flag after the catch, if he can even get any playing time as a receiver. Advertisement CB: Patrick Surtain II Perhaps we can argue that slot cornerbacks are actually better for flag football, considering the speed and space element involved. I'll assume last season's NFL Defensive Player of the Year will be fine in any environment. CB: Cooper DeJean We do have some recent tape of NFL stars playing flag football, from the Pro Bowl Games last season. Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. had three pick-6s and was the defensive MVP of that game and should be considered based on that, but we already have Justin Jefferson from the Vikings. Instead, let's go with DeJean, who had the highest Pro Football Focus grade of any cornerback as a rookie for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, and has experience playing safety, slot corner and outside corner. Besides, the Super Bowl champion Eagles have to have some representation. S: Kyle Hamilton Hamilton is the latest Swiss Army knife safety in the NFL, making plays everywhere for the Baltimore Ravens. That versatility is perfect for an Olympic flag football team. Not that it should matter much, given the rest of the starting lineup.

NFL to allow its players to compete in flag football at 2028 Olympics

NFL owners unanimously approved allowing players to participate in flag football for the 2028 Olympics. The vote at the spring meetings Tuesday authorized the league to negotiate safety provisions and scheduling logistics with the NFL Players Association and relevant international and national team governing bodies before it becomes reality during the Summer Games in Los Angeles. No more than one player per NFL club would be permitted. Olympic rosters will be selected by the national committee for each country. Wu Xiaoling/Xinhua via Getty Images Flag football is played as a five-on-five non-contact sport. The International Olympic Committee approved it as an Olympic sport back in October 2023. It was one of five sports approved for the 2028 Olympic Games, along with baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash. The NFL has made a major push in recent years to expand popularity of the sport outside of North America. Next season, seven regular-season games will be played internationally. Those will take place in Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Ireland.
