Param Sundari trailer: UAE creators react as Bollywood stereotypes Keralites yet again
Bollywood has come under fire yet again for a stereotypical representation, as Param Sundari, starring Siddharth Malhotra and Jahnvi Kapoor, dropped its trailer. The trailer showcases what seems to be a typical love story — one that crosses borders in a South Indian girl, North Indian guy narrative. Forty seconds into the trailer, and the stereotypes begin. If you didn't know any better, you may think Bollywood was trying to rage-bait its viewers (this might still be a possibility). Many commenters also drew parallels of the poor representation, with the character Shalini Unnikrishnan in The Kerala Story. Janhvi introduces herself as Thekappatil Sundari Damodaran Pillai - a long-winded name, which couples the place with the name of the person. Such names that begin with the place marks an era that ended with our grandparents' generation. But Bollywood seems to be still stuck in those times. As Sundari introduces herself, she is seen dancing Mohiniyattam, a classical Indian dance originating from Kerala. A montage of boat racing, climbing coconut trees, and Param (Siddharth's character) learning Kalaripayattu (a Kerala-origin martial art) is what follows. While these are popular in Kerala, the trailer seems to suggest Malayalees are always doing one of these activities at any given time. But while these can perhaps be forgiven, what really hurts is Sundari's random insertion of the Malayalam term Manunni (which roughly translates to a naive person, depending on the context). The trailer ends in what seems to be, ironically, an attempt to correct stereotypes. Sundari is seen explaining the difference between South Indian states by mentioning their languages and a famous actor of each state. After explaining that every South Indian is not Madrasi, she goes on to speak a sentence in what is supposed to be Malayalam; no matter how many times it was replayed, this writer could not make head or tail of it, and nor could several other Malayalee creators. Noora Al Helali, an Emirati creator famous for speaking Malayalam fluently along with her sister, called out the lack of effort on the part of the movie crew to learn the language. She acknowledged that while there are words that are difficult to pronounce for those not native to Kerala, the cast could have sat down with a dubbing artist for a better command of Malayalam, or to fix certain phrases. Ahmed AlKaashekh, a UAE-based influencer who hails from Kerala, called on Bollywood to do better if they are attempting to showcase diverse cultures. "It is 2025, and we are done with the lungi dance, the mullapoo (jasmine flowers), the Rajnikanth references." Pavithra Menon, a singer and television presenter from Kerala, questioned why the makers of such movies refuse to cast an actual Malayalee actress who has a strong command of the language. There also seems to be censorship of backlash against Param Sundari, which is landing in theatres on August 29. Menon reuploaded her video after the original rant was removed by Instagram.

Man's Post On Migrant Workers Amid Stray Dog Debate Viral: Why Internet Rounded Up 'Elites'
Several actors including Jahnvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan who have spoken in favour of stray dogs have been trolled online for their "privileged" opinions. If you have just logged in to the Internet, welcome. A lot has unfolded in the past 24 hours. The Supreme Court ordered the removal of stray dogs from the streets of the capital city while hearing a suo motu case against the canines attacking children. This has led to a national debate that doesn't seem to cease any time soon. One camp believes that SC's order to round up stray dogs is a short-sighted and inhumane decision, one that is impractical. Where will the stray dogs go? Questioned a large number of netizens who strongly believe that lack of shelter and space would eventually deplete their population in this 'cruel" and enforced crackdown on the canines. The other side argued that the stray dogs were a menace to society and the rising case of dog bites, some even leading to horrific deaths, put especially the vulnerable, kids and the elderly, at most risk. The human lives trumped the animal lives, they said. But what about the migrant workers, delivery drivers, or BPO employees who return home late regularly? A man's post on X, extending his empathy towards workers toiling on the streets at night, has resonated with many. 'You Don't Realise The Consequences" X user, who goes by the handle @Prithvi10_, wrote: 'People who work till late into the night are majorly migrants who work at restaurants / bars who finish their job and return home from narrow lanes, food delivery boys, there are even BPO employees who walk home a lil from their dropping point (sic)." He added that these people aren't well-to-do and have to fight off the strays daily. The delivery persons put their lives at risk by speeding on their bikes to fend off the chasing strays. 'Why should they go through this. These are just hardly 2-3 examples," the user wrote before stating that there are videos of children being attacked by the animals on the loose and many of those incidents lead to deaths. He added that the workers who were at constant mercy of stray dogs did not enjoy the privilege of having secure jobs, and one unfortunate attack on them would mean someone else would replace their job, leaving them with no salary to run home. Concluding his now-viral post, the user remarked that the privileged were guarded by their cars when they stepped out to smoke late at night, and they were in no position to realise the consequences of defending the presence of strays on the streets and in society. A Reddit user, agreeing with the viral post, remarked that they had spent 20 years around pet dogs and they still took the necessary precautions, including muzzles and leashes, to safeguard others as dogs naturally possessed 'animalistic instincts". So an unsupervised stray was prone to attacking unprovoked. 'I'm a dog lover and and a I own 3 dogs. I can without any doubt say that strays are not just a problem for the society but for their own self too. They are fried up in summers, they freeze in winters, they reproduce within themselves(incest) and are born with disabilities too. Apart from feeding them no one cares for them (sic)." 'For the strays no one cares, they are a ticking time bomb always. The SC order is justified and in the benefit of all. The only concern is that the authorities actually should care for the strays once they are moved to a shelter (sic)." The Reddit commenter also urged people to refrain from calling it 'animal cruelty". They added that it did concern them what the future of these strays would be at the shelter and if they would be looked after well. 'Elites Know Nothing" Dismissing their Instagram protest as performative, many on X panned Bollywood celebrities for sharing a forwarded template in support of the stray dogs. The prevailing argument was that Bollywood celebrities, shielded and insulated, lacked a true understanding of ground-level realities. 'They call it a menace. We call it a heartbeat." Gated society elites preach "love street dogs" because they've never had a pack chase them at midnight. Dump 20 outside their villas and watch that love PR started — Wellu (@Wellutwt) August 12, 2025 'Gated society elites preach 'love street dogs" because they've never had a pack chase them at midnight. Dump 20 outside their villas and watch that love evaporate.." a user remarked. Animal Rights Activities, Dog Lovers Animal welfare advocates have emphasised that extensive sterilisation programs, regular vaccination campaigns, and community feeding centres offer more compassionate and sustainable solutions for managing stray populations. 'The real fix? Large-scale sterilisation programs, regular vaccination drives, community feeding zones, and adoption campaigns. Not punishment. Not imprisonment." John Abraham, Sanya Malhotra, and Bhumi Pednekar were among the many celebrities who have reacted strongly to the SC order. Mumbai fashion weeks need a revamp. Not Dharavi & Girgaon
It's time we adulted and acknowledged the power of same-sex passion/fashion. We keep calling it 'Bridal Week', when, in fact, it could be successfully sold as Bridegroom Week in a category of its own. This year, there was a major credibility issue seeing new p apaji Siddharth Malhotra as a showstopper with the nubile singleton Jahnvi Kapoor on his arm. They aren't a couple even in our fantasy! Akshay Kumar and his deep curtsy in that boring sherwani? If only some bold designer had hired Ranveer Singh as the ultimate bride—ghunghat, veil, mehendi, the works! He's already rocking high heels and make-up. As one uninspiring fashion week segues into the next, fashion fatigue shows up—on the ramp. Not one original idea or breakthrough silhouette can be found, as one tired collection after the other is sent out by the same old, fully thakela designers, desperately (and unsuccessfully) trying to reinvent themselves. To add an element of newness to the predictable posturing, this edition saw the addition of a celeb Panditji—a designer astrologer at the venue. Smart! Our obsession with shadis and bridal wear needs someone like him around, just in case a few rishtas happen organically during the catwalk. Lo ji… Dilli ke LG Saab also fell for the fashion bait. Vinai Kumar Saxena showed up as the chief guest at the FDCI Manifest Wedding Weekend. The evening ended on a powdery high note, where desi fashion's darlings strutted their stuff—the same old stuff—but who cares? More ornate lehengas? Check. More bling? Check. More embellished bralets? Check. Embrace the rainbow, designers Fashion needs a serious reboot in India. What we are being served is Cowardly Couture. Major designers, bloated and pompous, have run out of ideas. Fluffy-haired seniors show off their perfect blow-dry and dart around officiously. Our Red Carpet obsession is killing freshness. And our so-called couture is mainly borrowed from the West, and hopelessly derivative. Socialite celebrities ape their famous global counterparts and end up looking comical. Cadaverous Cool is not attractive, ladies. Indian heiresses (beauties, all) who starve and starve and starve, to better slide into international haute couture and pose inside grand European palaces, need to ease up. Those gowns and corsets and bustiers and whatnot are created for the likes of Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Our ladies are gorgeous, glamorous, and ummm… ridiculously wealthy. They don't need validation from the French or Italians. Just be you, babe, eat some dhansak! My admiration goes to the beautiful young Koli community ladies from a fishing village close by, confidently wearing neon Crocs with their traditional kashta nauvaris. That's style! Our khoobsurat young men in fashion are the most short-changed segment. Male models work equally hard to get those fashion week gigs. They spend as much as their female counterparts on grooming, fitness, beauty products, and make-up. It takes a lot for some of the small-town guys to get ramp-ready. But it's the starlets-as-models who walk away with the fame and fancy fees. It's always about the bride! It would translate into more business all around if India changed its position on same-sex marriages and legalised gay rishtas. There'd be a boom—and not just in fashion. The market is ripe and ready to support what is already accepted in 34 countries. What about an official Gay Fashion Week, designers? Why hide behind terms like 'gender fluidity', or tread super-cautiously around apparel specifically created for this vast and unrepresented segment of Indians? With the 79th Independence Day coming up, let's get the tricolour to embrace rainbow colours. Also read: India is becoming a Republic of RWAs. It's the most powerful elected body Dharavi from 30,000 feet Gautam Adani doesn't like looking out of the window of his PJ when he flies into Mumbai (ummm… not really HIS city, if you get the drift). Addressing students at IIM Lucknow, the billionaire expressed his distress. 'Dharavi is Asia's largest slum…Every time I fly to Mumbai, the slums below disturb my conscience, as no nation can truly rise when so many of its people live without dignity,' Adani said. Awwww. So sweet! Didn't know Gautam Seth was such a softie at heart. But hello, boss… Dharavi and the dignity of labour go together. Has India's second-richest man (I'm not saying it, Forbes is… and please don't ask who the first is) ever set foot in Dharavi to see what a dynamic and incredible 'city within a city' it is? There is no place in the world quite like Dharavi, which houses around 12,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with an estimated annual economic output of over $1 billion. Dharavi's diverse businesses span various segments from recycling to leather and pottery. It is a self-created economic zone exporting products globally. Perhaps a walk in this 'slum' after flying in the clouds is overdue, Mr Adani? Yes, Adani's redevelopment plan for these very 600 acres in the heart of Mumbai must have merit. He has called it his most 'transformative' project. Adani is 'reimagining' Asia's largest slum into 'townships', and the Dharavi Redevelopment project is estimated to cost Rs 95,790 crore. Bless Mr Adani's kind heart. So glad his view from 30,000 feet will improve by 2032. While on the subject, Mumbai's glorious and culturally vibrant Girgaon may soon go the Dharavi way under the guise of 'redevelopment'. The area is home to historic chawls—Mohan Building is 121 years old. It's where Bal Gangadhar Tilak first began the Ganeshotsav, back in 1893. Even worse, Girgaon's cultural milieu, which attracted the likes of Raja Ravi Varma, is likely to disappear altogether. The prospect of Girgaon turning into Gurugram… perish the thought, I say. I mean—Gurugram? Every Mumbaikar's worst nightmare. Noooooo! Shobhaa De is an author, columnist, social commentator, and opinion-shaper. She has written 20 books. She tweets @DeShobhaa.
