Ludhiana: Trader assaulted, his shop vandalised; FIR against 13
In a shocking incident of retaliation, at least 15 individuals assaulted a shopkeeper and vandalised his shop in Mahadev Nagar Market after he allegedly circulated a CCTV video capturing them robbing a cyclist. The Sahnewal police have registered an FIR against the identified accused and launched an investigation. The victim, Jai Prakash, a resident of Sheikh Colony on Pakhowal Road, runs Krishna Furniture and Electronics in Mahadev Nagar. In his police complaint, Jai Prakash stated that on May 24, a group of men was caught on his CCTV camera while assaulting and robbing a cyclist near his shop. The footage, which captured the accused snatching a silver chain from the victim, was later shared on social media and went viral. Enraged by the video's circulation, the accused allegedly launched a retaliatory attack the next day. On May 25, the group, armed with sharp-edged weapons, stormed Jai Prakash's shop, vandalised the property, and assaulted him. The shopkeeper managed to escape the assault and save his life. Sahnewal police, acting on the complaint, registered a case against Krishna Thakur, Brijesh Gupta, Shivam Yadav, Neeraj Kumar, Paramjit, Suraj alias KD, Gautam — all residents of New Azad Nagar, Peepal Chowk — and eight unidentified others. Haryana issues Covid advisory amid rise in weekly cases
Following a rise in Covid-19 cases across Haryana, the state health department has issued a fresh advisory directing all district health officials, surveillance teams, and hospitals to enhance preparedness and remain on alert. The advisory, issued under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), follows the detection of 15 new Covid-19 cases in the past week—eight from Gurugram, five from Faridabad, and one each from Yamunanagar and Karnal. Officials have been asked to ensure hospitals establish dedicated flu corners and maintain adequate isolation beds, oxygen supplies, PPE kits, N-95 masks, antibiotics, and testing kits. 'Hospitals must strictly follow infection prevention and control protocols, particularly in OPDs and emergency wards, where healthcare workers should wear masks,' said a senior health department official. The department has also called for refresher training sessions for medical staff to update them on Covid symptoms, case management, and state protocols. Civil surgeons and district surveillance officers have been instructed to resume monitoring influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) trends. According to the revised testing strategy, 100% of SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases must undergo Covid-19 testing. 'All public and private facilities must upload daily data on the IDSP-IHIP portal,' the advisory states. It also asks districts to coordinate with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to ensure preparedness. In Gurugram, where the highest number of new cases have been reported, 10 beds have been set aside at the Civil Hospital in Sector 10 for possible admissions, although no hospitalisation has been required yet. 'The district administration has intensified surveillance. Early detection and timely isolation are key,' said Dr Jai Prakash, Covid-19 nodal officer. Health officials have urged citizens to wear masks in crowded places, maintain hand hygiene, avoid public spitting, and stay home if symptomatic. 'So far, most patients are showing mild symptoms similar to the common cold,' said Dr Alka Singh, Chief Medical Officer, Gurugram. However, the exact positivity rate or number of tests conducted over the past week has not been disclosed. 'The district administration has intensified surveillance efforts. We are tracing the travel history of both individuals and identifying people they may have come in contact with recently. Early detection and timely isolation are key in preventing further transmission,' said Dr Jai Prakash, Nodal Officer for Covid-19. The health department has also issued an advisory urging citizens to seek medical testing if they develop symptoms such as a cold, cough, fever, body ache, or fatigue. Special focus has been placed on international and inter-state travellers, with district surveillance officers instructed to follow up with such individuals.

Gurgaon hospitals told to set up flu OPDs, step up Covid vigilance too
Gurgaon: In a move to bolster preparedness against seasonal respiratory illnesses, the health department has directed all govt and private hospitals in the city to set up dedicated flu OPDs and flu corners. These facilities will cater to patients reporting symptoms similar to Covid-19, such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The directive comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen early detection and treatment of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), which often mimic Covid symptoms. Hospitals have also been asked to review their preparedness and ensure that adequate infrastructure, trained staff, and protocols are in place to manage a possible surge in cases. At present, Gurgaon has five active Covid cases. All patients are in home isolation with mild symptoms, health officials said. However, experts have cautioned against letting down guard despite the low caseload. "While the numbers remain low, the virus hasn't disappeared. All hospitals and laboratories have been instructed to remain alert and adhere to government-approved testing rates," said Dr Alka Singh, Chief Medical Officer, Gurgaon. She added that the district is equipped to handle any surge and urged residents to follow basic precautions such as wearing masks in crowded places and maintaining hygiene. Residents, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, have been advised to seek medical attention in case of flu-like symptoms and avoid unnecessary exposure. "The department has asked us to train newly inducted staff for managing Covid patients, should the need arise," said Jai Prakash, district surveillance officer.
