Rangdajied fight back but NorthEast United salvage draw in Group E finale
Rangdajied United FC came from a goal down to lead defending champions NorthEast United FC, only for the Highlanders to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw in their final Group E match of the 134th Indian Oil Durand Cup, here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Bekey Oram's early penalty was cancelled out by Manbhakupar Iawphniaw, before Danzel Umdor put Rangdajied ahead just before halftime. A well-worked Jairo strike in the second half ensured NEUFC remained unbeaten heading into the quarterfinals, while Rangdajied signed off their campaign with a spirited display and their first point of the tournament. Having already secured a quarterfinal berth, NEUFC head coach Juan Pedro Benali made sweeping changes to his lineup, rotating ten players and retaining only Jose Nunez in midfield in a 4-3-3 formation. Parthib Gogoi led the attack in the absence of in-form striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, flanked by Thoi Singh and Spaniard Jairo. RUFC head coach Aiborlang Khongjee also rang the changes after their defeat to Malaysian Armed Forces, bringing in six new faces and setting up in a similar 4-3-3. Manbhakupar spearheaded the attack with Everson and Pasborlang on the wings, while skipper Balamlynti operated from full-back and Meshan Sumer took his place between the posts. The match began cautiously, but NEUFC soon tested Rangdajied's defence. In the 6th minute, Nunez's curling free kick was safely gathered by Sumer. The Highlanders probed regularly but were wasteful in the final third, while Rangdajied struggled to penetrate beyond midfield.

Arif Aiman vows to fight for his place in JDT starting XI
KUALA LUMPUR: The arrival of new signings at Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) this season has spurred winger Arif Aiman Hanapi to work even harder to secure his spot in the starting XI. The fleet-footed Southern Tigers star said the influx of foreign and heritage players has created healthy competition in training and given everyone the chance to lift their game. "Yes, now I have to work hard for my place. I have to fight with my teammates in training," said Arif Aiman. "I prepared seriously before the season started because every season is a new opportunity. I never treat it the same as the last. "Every new season is important. The arrival of new players has helped the team a lot and JDT are getting stronger and stronger." JDT claimed the Charity Shield for the 10th time after a 3-0 win over Selangor in the Charity Shield at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Friday. Arif Aiman was on target in the 72nd minute to complete a stylish victory for the Southern Tigers after debutant Jairo Da Silva struck in the second minute and Eddy Israfilov headed home in the 64th Arif Aiman admitted every player faces ups and downs but vowed never to give up, always giving his best on the pitch. He thanked coach Xisco Munoz for giving him freedom in training, and stressed the importance of personal preparation ahead of the league campaign. "In football there are times when you struggle and times when it's easy. But I'll keep learning and taking my chances, no matter whether the opponent is strong or weak," he said. Arif also believes Jairo brings a different dimension compared to his partnership with prolific forward Bergson da Silva. "Every player has their strengths and weaknesses. In pre-season we played a lot together, so I know how Jairo plays and he knows how I play. "With Bergson it's different, with Jairo it's different. Every minute in a match is different, and we adapt from there," he said.

JDT flex early ahead of new season with Jairo and Ibrahim signings
KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are flexing their muscles ahead of the 2025-2026 M-League season by unveiling two new signings - experienced Brazilian forward Jairo da Silva and exciting local talent Ibrahim Manusi. The teaser, released on JDT's social media platforms, shows Jairo typing his name into what appears to be a digital lineup list for the new season. Already on the list were familiar names such as Bergson da Silva, Nazmi Faiz Mansor, Afiq Fazail, Syihan Hazmi, Arif Aiman Hanapi, Natxo Insa and Shahrul Saad. After slotting in his own name, Jairo cheekily adds a line beneath it and types "???", hinting that another high-profile name may soon be joining the Southern Tigers. "From South America to Europe and now Asia, Jairo Da Silva joins the Southern Tigers!" the club posted on Instagram, alongside a silhouette of the player in his new JDT jersey. The 33-year-old, who started his professional career with Botafogo in Brazil, is no stranger to the international scene. He was scouted while playing in the Copa Amsterdam and soon moved to AS Trencin in Slovakia, where he made a name for himself. Notably, he assisted all three goals in a stunning 3-2 win over Steaua Bucharest in a UEFA Champions League qualifier during the 2012-2013 season. In 2015, Greek giants PAOK snapped him up for €400,000 (approximately RM2 million), and he scored his first league goal in a 3-1 win over PAS Giannina. Loan spells at PAS Giannina and Sheriff Tiraspol followed. But it was at Hajduk Split in Croatia, where Jairo truly flourished. During the 2018-19 season, he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions, earning a place in the league's Team of the Season. His performances earned him a three-year contract extension in 2019. Now, having played in Brazil, Slovakia, Greece, Moldova, Croatia and Azerbaijan, Jairo adds Asia to his footballing passport with this move to JDT. The Southern Tigers followed up that signing with the announcement of 24-year-old Ibrahim Manusi on Monday. A product of the club's development system, Ibrahim shot into the spotlight during the Malaysia Cup final last season when he came off the bench against Sri Pahang and dazzled with his confidence and composure on the ball. His sharp touches and fearless runs stood out on a night dominated by JDT's seasoned stars, and fans have been calling for more of him ever since.
