Explore All Events The Caring Kitchen sets opening date in Orangevale For months, my colleague Jake Abbott has been following The Caring Kitchen's plans to open an Orangevale location. It will be the second site for the locally owned vegan bakery, which currently has a Rancho Cordova store. Update: The Caring Kitchen's Orangevale location will hold a grand opening June 21, according to a social media announcement from the business. The Orangevale bakery is at 9372 Madison Ave., Suite 1, in a spot previously occupied by Paisley Cafe. The Caring Kitchen's menu changes weekly and includes gluten-free and vegan items, such as cookies, cupcakes and brownies. Delaney Polidori owns the bakery. Analysis forecasts thousands of Railyards jobs An analysis released Thursday projects thousands of jobs and billions in economic impact from the Railyards development. Released ahead of a critical Sacramento City Council vote on financing infrastructure improvements for the infill site, the analysis by Stantec Inc. found the one-time economic impact from construction in the Railyards would top $8.2 billion. Across Sacramento County, Railyards development will support nearly 24,000 jobs, including 13,563 within the project footprint, according to the report. Vietnamese sandwich chain adds Davis location A Vietnamese sandwich chain is the latest tenant to join the newly redeveloped Davis Collection center, which is starting to see businesses open their doors. The center, formerly University Mall at the northwest corner of Russell Boulevard and Anderson Road in Davis, has been undergoing a redevelopment by New York-based Brixmor Property Group Inc. for the past few years. A site plan was recently updated for the Davis Collection indicating Paris Banh Mi will fill a 2,000-square-foot space next to the recently opened Nordstrom Rack. Midtown site, entitled for 296 apartments, is for sale A Midtown Sacramento site with entitlements for nearly 300 apartments is on the market. Turton Commercial Real Estate is marketing the 32,000-square-foot site on the northeast corner of K and 21st streets under the name "21K." Three years ago, current owner D&S Development got entitlements for a project on the site with 296 apartments with 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, in an eight-story building. Surgical Care Associates renews lease in South Natomas Surgical Care Associates, a national network of ambulatory surgery centers, has renewed its lease at Citygate Plaza in South Natomas, according to MKD Citygate LLC, the building's owner. The five-story office building at 2450 Venture Oaks Way will continue to house a 3,379-square-foot administrative office for the company. The South Natomas location is not a clinical site but supports non-clinical operations tied to surgical care coordination and patient logistics. Explore All Events The Grazing Goose opens in Rocklin Last year, my colleague Jake Abbott told you that The Grazing Goose, a local catering and charcuterie board business, was joining the Rocklin Crossings retail center. Update:The business opened Wednesday at 5410 Crossings Drive, Suite 102, according to a social media announcement. The new location is called The Grazing Goose Bakery + Cafe. In addition to charcuterie boards, it offers items such as sandwiches, salads and coffee. Ava Kivley owns the business. In Rocklin, The Grazing Goose fills a spot previously occupied by Jon and Bon's Yogurt Shoppe. New plans for Sac Republic FC stadium released Sacramento Republic FC has filed new plans for a stadium in Sacramento's Railyards development, with some notable differences from previous iterations. The stadium would have a capacity of 12,000 with the ability to expand to up to 20,000 in a second phase, according to the application. The last stadium concept, intended for the soccer club's move to Major League Soccer, would've had a maximum capacity of 25,000, but never began construction after an investor pulled out of joining team ownership. UPS to cut shifts, hundreds of jobs in West Sac United Parcel Service Inc. plans to end two of three shifts at its longtime warehouse in West Sacramento, with a permanent layoff of up to 355 employees, according to a filing with state employment officials. Atlanta-based UPS filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification of a pending permanent layoff at the UPS center at 1380 Shore St. in West Sacramento. Major construction project at SMF nears halfway mark Sacramento International Airport's $390 million Terminal B parking garage is in the early vertical construction phase and remains on track for completion in fall 2026, according to airport officials. "We're in the early phases, probably the first 30% of construction,' said Sheri Thompson-Duarte, deputy director of airport operations for SMF, in an interview. 'But it's very visible now. We're going vertical, and passengers can see that work is clearly underway." Reporter Chris Campbell has the latest on the new Terminal B parking garage at SMF. Murphy Austin picks up practice group from Downey Brand Sacramento-based commercial law firm Murphy Austin Adams Schoenfeld LLP has added a new specialty to its offerings following the addition of a family law group previously with Downey Brand LLP. Murphy Austin, which was founded in 1999, specializes in practice areas focused around corporate, tax, and real estate transactions, construction, business and commercial litigation, labor and employment, health care, nonprofits and estate planning. Explore All Events Little Whale Swim School opens on Broadway In 2023, my colleague Jake Abbott told you that locally owned Little Whale Swim School would fill a former bank building at 1331 Broadway in Sacramento. Update: The swim school is now open on Broadway, according to a social media announcement from the business. This is the second location for the indoor swim school, which also has a site at 4106 El Camino Ave. in Arden-Arcade. Anya Hall owns the business. The Broadway swim school was a $2 million project, according to the Business Journal's recent Redefining the Core coverage. Railyards development finally coming to life In the works for decades, the Railyards project north of Sacramento is now showing tangible results. The AJ — a 345-unit, mixed-income project in the Railyards — began leasing in late April. A half-mile west of AJ, dozens of construction worker cars are parked across Railyards Boulevard from the other big project underway in that area — Kaiser Permanente's $1 billion, 18-acre medical center campus. Two more projects are on deck: a new 12,000-seat soccer stadium for Sacramento Republic FC, and adaptive reuse of an existing building to create Paint Shop, a venue for live events. In our latest cover story, Senior Reporter Ben van der Meer has an update on the Railyards project. Entertainment chain replacing former Rite Aid A former Rite Aid space in Roseville is being converted into a new entertainment facility by a chain breaking into the California market. The building at 990 Pleasant Grove Blvd. in Roseville's Veterans Plaza has been vacant since Rite Aid shuttered the site in 2022. Winnipeg, Manitoba-based entertainment company Activate Games, which operates facilities globally that merge technology and physical activity to create live-action gaming experiences, is seeking a permit to remodel a portion of the building. Local company closes after failing to raise capital Ag-tech company California Safe Soil LLC has shut down its operations and is liquidating its products and planning to auction off its equipment. The 2012 startup developed a process to convert leftover expired food from supermarkets into a low-cost, nutrient-rich soil amendment for farmers. 'We ran out of money. We were making great progress,' said founder Dan Morash. The company ceased operations May 2. Reporter Mark Anderson has details about California Safe Soil's closure. 2 local nonprofits combining to expand services TKMomentum Inc., a Sacramento-based nonprofit providing employment services for people with barriers to work, is being acquired by Odyssey Learning Center Inc., an Orangevale nonprofit known for its programs for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. All 80 TKMomentum employees will join Odyssey Learning Center when the acquisition is completed July 1, leaders from both organizations said. Explore All Events Big Day of Giving is underway Today is the Big Day of Giving, an annual fundraising push that has raised more than $104 million for nonprofit organizations in the Sacramento area since 2013. Organized by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, the Big Day of Giving includes hundreds of nonprofits serving El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties. Donation information is available online. You can make donations until 11:59 p.m. tonight. As of 8 a.m., today's effort had raised $4.4 million. Sacramento Zoo cancels Elk Grove move A planned new zoo in Elk Grove will not be moving forward, the Sacramento Zoological Society announced Wednesday. Citing rising costs and concerns a new zoo would house far fewer species than the existing zoo in Sacramento's Land Park, the decision was made not to proceed, the society announced in a statement on its website. Though the Sacramento Zoo is accredited through 2029, the planned move to Elk Grove was sparked by concerns that the aging, landlocked facility in Land Park would eventually fail to meet modern standards for zoos. Habit Burger plans 2 new Sacramento County sites Habit Burger & Grill, known for its charbroiled hamburgers, has submitted plans for two new locations in Sacramento County. The Irvine-based restaurant chain, which has more than a dozen locations throughout the greater Sacramento market, is seeking major design reviews for projects at 8861 Greenback Lane in Orangevale and 6150 Florin Road in the Florin area of Sacramento County. Rancho Cordova industrial property sold A fully leased industrial property of three buildings in Rancho Cordova has sold in an off-market deal, Before the property at 2643-2647 Mercantile Drive officially came on the market, broker Peter Winterling said he had three to four good offers to buy. "The number of offers shows how strong the Sacramento industrial market still is," said Winterling, a senior vice president and shareholder with Kidder Mathews. "It's almost as straightforward a purchase as you can find." Senior Reporter Ben van der Meer has details about the industrial property sold in Rancho Cordova. Amazon's vendor change spurs nearly 300 layoffs Nearly 300 jobs at Amazon locations in the Central Valley are being eliminated as the online shopping giant is switching maintenance vendors. The layoffs are effective June 14 for employees of Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. (NYSE: JLL) subsidiary Jones Lang LaSalle Americas Inc. The job cuts are a total of 298 people. They include 77 people at SMF1, an Amazon fulfillment center in Metro Air Park, at 4900 West Elkhorn Blvd. in Sacramento.
