Former Wisconsin football star lands contract extension with Dallas Cowboys
Former Wisconsin star tight end Jake Ferguson agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The deal is worth $52 million, with $30 million guaranteed, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The contract also awards the Madison, Wisconsin, native with a $12 million signing bonus. Ferguson becomes the second former Badger to receive an NFL payday this offseason, joining Pittsburgh Steelers' superstar T.J. Watt. The defensive standout agreed to a historic three-year, $123 million extension with the Steelers, becoming the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Despite a moderately quiet 2024 season, Ferguson's contract reflects his fast start to his professional career. After being drafted with the No. 129 overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft, Ferguson has reeled in 149 receptions for 1,429 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons. In 2024, the Wisconsin product reeled in 59 receptions for 494 yards as Dallas' No. 2 passing threat behind star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. That performance followed a career-best 71-reception, 761-yard, five-touchdown campaign in 2023, the year he earned his lone Pro Bowl bid. During his collegiate tenure with the Badgers, the tight end corralled a pass in all 47 appearances, setting a school record. His 1,618 career receiving yards also land at No. 3 all-time among Wisconsin tight ends, behind Travis Beckum and Troy Fumagalli. Ferguson projects to lace up as the second or third offensive weapon behind Lamb and newly-acquired wide receiver George Pickens in 2025, with Dak Prescott returning from injury. The Cowboys will open their season on Sept. 4 against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. NFL superstar Jake Ferguson jokes he still hasn't washed his hands after meeting Taylor Swift
When Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson got to meet the world's biggest pop star, it's possible that he realized he'd shaken hands with someone who was a 'cowboy like me'. Ferguson, the fiancée of Miami women's basketball star Haley Cavinder, revealed that he recently met pop icon Taylor Swift at a concert earlier in the summer. Speaking to 'The Sweet Spot' on Sportsradio 96.7FM/1310 The Ticket in Texas, Ferguson revealed that he bumped into the 'Cruel Summer' star in Nashville. He was attending 'Tight End University' - the brainchild of Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce and 49ers tight end George Kittle. Swift shocked everyone in the crowd by getting on stage at what was initially billed as a Kane Brown concert and performing. 'I shook her hand,' Ferguson revealed. 'I still haven't washed my hand.' He continued: 'She's so normal. She met my fiancée, my fiancée was like, 'She's so nice!' Not that I was expecting anything different, but like, she knew football. 'She was talking like, 'We [the Chiefs] got a big game at Cowboys this year!' Swift is very right about that. The Chiefs will be traveling down to Texas to play the Cowboys in a Thanksgiving Day matchup. Ferguson - who is in Oxnard, California for training camp - just recently inked a four-year, $52million contract extension. He'll be hoping the Cowboys find a way to improve upon their poor 2024 season - when an injury to quarterback Dak Prescott led to a 7-10 finish and missing the playoffs.

Jake Ferguson's $52 million contract exposes Cowboys' draft mistake
Jake Ferguson's new contract should be a happy day for the Cowboys front office. A fourth round pick turned into Dak Prescott's security blanket for the future. But beneath the high-fives and congratulations is an underhanded admittance that Dallas whiffed on a draft pick not too long ago. A year after Ferguson was drafted, the Cowboys selected tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second round of the 2023 draft. At the time, Ferguson only had 19 receptions for 174 yards his rookie year. Dalton Schultz was the starter that season but the Cowboys moved on from him. Schoonmaker, out of the University of Michigan, was expected to be an excellent blocking and pass-catching tight end. Instead it was Ferguson who stood out as a secure target over the middle while Schoonmaker struggled. The former Wolverine only had 27 receptions for 241 yards and one touchdown last season. He hasn't proven worthy of a second round investment. The Ferguson contract shows the Cowboys front office is admitting defeat on Schoonmaker. He has two years left on his rookie deal and still has a chance to prove himself, but Ferguson has taken the mantle as the primary tight end. It will take an injury or catastrophic shift if Dallas was to ever view Schoonmaker as a good pick. It's a rare miss for a front office that has drafted some elite talent.
