Saints quarterback on whether or not the team should sign a veteran

Saints quarterback on whether or not the team should sign a veteran Jake Haener argues the Saints don't need another QB The New Orleans Saints will have a new opening day starter at quarterback in 2025. With the retirement of Derek Carr, it's likely that either rookie Tyler Shough or second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler will be the starter when New Orleans opens their 2025 season at home against the Arizona Cardinals in September. Third-year signal caller Jake Haener and undrafted rookie Hunter Dekkers are also in the mix. The four New Orleans quarterbacks have a collective total of 11 games of NFL experience and just seven starts. Those were divided up by Rattler and Haener last season, as they went a collective 0-7 in those games. Combined, Rattler and Haener have completed just 55.4% of their throws for an average of only 140 yards per game with 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. The inexperience at the position has led many to believe that the Saints will sign a veteran quarterback before training camp. Count Jake Haener as one that doesn't believe the Saints will, or should, make such a move. In an interview with last week, Haener gave some strong thoughts when asked if New Orleans should add a veteran backup. ''I mean, what are you going to get from that? Those guys (new coaches on the staff) are veterans, man. They've done it. They've been through it. … You've got everything you need in terms of what to look for, what to ask, what to see. They've seen it all. They've been around it.'' "If there's anything we're missing, that we don't have all the answers to the test — we're still young, we have a lot to learn — they're great resources to have. It allows you to see different perspectives,' Haener continued. "The coaches understand that, 'Hey, every quarterback is different.' And my footwork at times may be different from Spencer's and Tyler's. And we're going to build this thing up to the point where, 'Hey, you do whatever's comfortable if you're throwing the ball on time and on rhythm." Haener was referring to the new coaches on the New Orleans offensive staff. Head coach Kellen Moore, offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, and quarterback coach Scott Tolzien were all NFL quarterbacks. Moore was a backups with the Lions and Cowboys for six years and played in five games. Nussmeier was a backup with the Saints for four years, Colts for one, and played one year in the CFL. He played in five games with New Orleans. Tolzien played in 10 games over seven years with the 49ers, Packers, and Colts. Perhaps Haener is right, and the combined playing/coaching experience of Moore, Nussmeier, and Tolzien is enough. To his point, the Saints have not explored bringing in a veteran quarterback at this stage. The most notable veterans available in free agency are Carson Wentz and former Saint Teddy Bridgewater. New Orleans has also been rumored to potentially go after Jameis Winston (Giants) or Kenny Pickett (Browns) in a trade. While it's unlikely that the Saints trade for a veteran quarterback, it is worth watching the situations in New York and Cleveland if the New Orleans quarterbacks don't perform well through this week's minicamp or early in training camp. Haener won't be throwing many passes in minicamp and could possibly miss the early portion of training camp. He is dealing with an oblique injury suffered in practice last month. Haener appeared in four games last season, making one start. He completed 46% of his throws for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Rattler made six starts and relieved Haener in another game. He had a 57% completion percentage with 1,317 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. New Orleans drafted Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the 40th overall choice, the eighth pick of the second round. It seems clear that the starting quarterback competition will be between Shough and Rattler. Whether the Saints explore the option of adding a veteran will depend on how well these two perform through minicamp and early training camp practices.

Report: Saints QB Jake Haener (oblique) out 'couple of weeks'

May 22 - New Orleans Saints quarterback Jake Haener will miss "a couple of weeks" after sustaining an oblique strain, ESPN reported Thursday. Haener suffered the injury while throwing extra passes during Wednesday's OTA practice. Per ESPN, an MRI revealed a strain but no tear of the oblique for Haener, who is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. He likely will be involved in a three-way competition with rookie Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler for the starter's role. Shough was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft last month, while Rattler was a fifth-round pick in 2024. Derek Carr, the team's starting quarterback the last two seasons, announced his retirement on May 10 due to a right shoulder injury. Haener, 26, completed 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception in eight games (one start) last season. He was selected by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media

Jake Haener suffers oblique strain, likely out until training camp

There has been a development in New Orleans' quarterback competition. Jake Haener is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the offseason program by an oblique strain, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Part of the three-way competition that also includes Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough, Haener suffered the injury after Wednesday's OTA practice while throwing extra passes. An MRI revealed that Haener had a strain but did not suffer a tear, which means he does not need surgery. He is expected to miss a couple of weeks, but should be ready for the start of training camp. A fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft, Haener appeared in eight games with one start last season. He completed 18-of-39 passes for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

New Orleans Saints reveal bizarre plan to replace retiring quarterback Derek Carr

The Saints will be holding a three-way quarterback competition to replace Derek Carr, head coach Kellen Moore has revealed. Carr, the team's starter for the last two seasons, suddenly announced his retirement on Saturday. According to the team, medical scans earlier this year showed he he had 'significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.' And with the four-time Pro Bowler no longer with the team, the Saints will be giving Tyler Shough, Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler each a chance to win the starting job. 'We're going to let all three of these guys roll,' Moore told reporters. 'They've all earned these opportunities.' Moore, who believes 'one of these guys will rise [to the starting job]' by the beginning of the preseason, added that Shough was 'excellent' during the team's recent rookie minicamp. The former Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville passer represents the highest draft investment in the Saints' quarterback room, as the team used the No. 40 pick to land him last month. Haener was a fourth-rounder in 2023 while Rattler was a fifth-rounder last year. Though Carr began last season as starter, both Haener and Rattler got chances to impress after New Orleans' QB1 missed a total of seven games with oblique and hand injuries. Rattler earned most of the reps in Carr's absence, as he started six games, averaging 188.1 yards per contest and throwing four touchdowns against five interceptions. Haener appeared in eight games but started just one, throwing for 226 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception. Following his shock retirement, Carr released a statement on his decision. 'Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with [his wife] Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League,' said Carr. 'For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. 'It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.' Following Carr's shoulder injury being diagnosed in March, surgery was an option, though it would've put his entire 2025 season in jeopardy and didn't ensure a return to full strength. So, after discussing with his wife, Heather, as well as team and outside medical personnel, Carr decided to end his NFL career after 11 seasons. The No. 36 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Carr retires with 41,245 passing yards and 257 touchdowns against 112 interceptions.
