Saints quarterback on whether or not the team should sign a veteran Jake Haener argues the Saints don't need another QB
The New Orleans Saints will have a new opening day starter at quarterback in 2025. With the retirement of Derek Carr, it's likely that either rookie Tyler Shough or second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler will be the starter when New Orleans opens their 2025 season at home against the Arizona Cardinals in September. Third-year signal caller Jake Haener and undrafted rookie Hunter Dekkers are also in the mix.
The four New Orleans quarterbacks have a collective total of 11 games of NFL experience and just seven starts. Those were divided up by Rattler and Haener last season, as they went a collective 0-7 in those games. Combined, Rattler and Haener have completed just 55.4% of their throws for an average of only 140 yards per game with 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. The inexperience at the position has led many to believe that the Saints will sign a veteran quarterback before training camp.
Count Jake Haener as one that doesn't believe the Saints will, or should, make such a move. In an interview with NOLA.com last week, Haener gave some strong thoughts when asked if New Orleans should add a veteran backup.
''I mean, what are you going to get from that? Those guys (new coaches on the staff) are veterans, man. They've done it. They've been through it. … You've got everything you need in terms of what to look for, what to ask, what to see. They've seen it all. They've been around it.''
"If there's anything we're missing, that we don't have all the answers to the test — we're still young, we have a lot to learn — they're great resources to have. It allows you to see different perspectives,' Haener continued. "The coaches understand that, 'Hey, every quarterback is different.' And my footwork at times may be different from Spencer's and Tyler's. And we're going to build this thing up to the point where, 'Hey, you do whatever's comfortable if you're throwing the ball on time and on rhythm."
Haener was referring to the new coaches on the New Orleans offensive staff. Head coach Kellen Moore, offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, and quarterback coach Scott Tolzien were all NFL quarterbacks. Moore was a backups with the Lions and Cowboys for six years and played in five games. Nussmeier was a backup with the Saints for four years, Colts for one, and played one year in the CFL. He played in five games with New Orleans. Tolzien played in 10 games over seven years with the 49ers, Packers, and Colts.
Perhaps Haener is right, and the combined playing/coaching experience of Moore, Nussmeier, and Tolzien is enough. To his point, the Saints have not explored bringing in a veteran quarterback at this stage. The most notable veterans available in free agency are Carson Wentz and former Saint Teddy Bridgewater.
New Orleans has also been rumored to potentially go after Jameis Winston (Giants) or Kenny Pickett (Browns) in a trade. While it's unlikely that the Saints trade for a veteran quarterback, it is worth watching the situations in New York and Cleveland if the New Orleans quarterbacks don't perform well through this week's minicamp or early in training camp.
Haener won't be throwing many passes in minicamp and could possibly miss the early portion of training camp. He is dealing with an oblique injury suffered in practice last month. Haener appeared in four games last season, making one start. He completed 46% of his throws for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Rattler made six starts and relieved Haener in another game. He had a 57% completion percentage with 1,317 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions.
New Orleans drafted Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough with the 40th overall choice, the eighth pick of the second round. It seems clear that the starting quarterback competition will be between Shough and Rattler. Whether the Saints explore the option of adding a veteran will depend on how well these two perform through minicamp and early training camp practices.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers are official. He has signed his deal and participated with the team during mandatory minicamp. With the deal now done, the speculation has begun about what to expect from the future Hall of Fame quarterback with his new team. Rodgers is still capable of putting up big numbers, as he showed flashes of last season, but he is no longer the elite superstar that he once was. There have been some concerns about the fit between the two parties in 2025. Aller/Getty Images One NFL legend has spoken out and revealed some level of concern about the new partnership. That legend is none other than San Francisco 49ers great Steve Young. Read more: Steelers Defender Fires Off Bold Threat to Browns Young revealed his concerns about the Steelers and Rodgers during an appearance this week on the "Rich Eisen Show." "It's not a perfect match... for who he wants to be and what the Steelers are doing, even philosophically," Young said. "So they're going to have to figure out how to fit together. And you saw what happened with the Jets — didn't fit very well. And I'm worried that they might not fit perfectly with Pittsburgh." He then went on to suggest how Pittsburgh and Rodgers can get the most of their new marriage. "If your processing power is better than average, you want the ball out. So you need. So you need people that can get into space... go get people who are talented, who can get in there, find the space in the defense, and get the ball out." Those are very legitimate concerns. Rodgers played a solid season with the New York Jets in 2024, but the overall team success was lacking. He completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Rodgers could help them do just that if the right situation is in place. Rodgers is a proven winner and has shown that year in and year out. While the last two years didn't go well, he is now two years removed from the torn Achilles and is starting a fresh chapter with a long-term successful franchise. It will be interesting to see if Pittsburgh and Rodgers can make the kind of run that they're hoping to make this season. For more Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Authorities added in a statement that they 'observed signs of intoxication' from Joseph and that an investigation is underway. Joseph's incident on Saturday is not his first involvement with the police, with the cornerback being in the car of a suspected gunman in Dallas before a shooting in 2022. Police ultimately concluded Joseph was not the shooter, and he was cleared of any wrongdoing shortly after. Advertisement 'We obviously don't need our players to be involved in situations that make this come up about your character,' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said at the time. 'He needs to be a good player on and off the field and we're going to give him a chance to do that. [Our message to him is] Now get in here and be a good player, be a guy everybody depends on, and make your name in a positive way and clean it up.' Joseph played in four games for Miami before being traded to the Seahawks midway through that season. The defensive back is now on the roster of the UFL's DC Defenders after playing in nine games this season.

Clemson leads the pack with five first-round picks in this 2026 NFL Mock Draft

Clemson leads the pack with five first-round picks in this 2026 NFL Mock Draft Clemson football's roster is loaded with future NFL talent, and one recent mock draft reflects just how high the national expectations are for several Tigers. Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports released an early 2026 NFL mock draft and included five Clemson players in the first round — three of them landing in the top 10. Defensive linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods led the way, with Parker projected to go No. 3 overall to the New York Jets and Woods slotted at No. 5 to the Tennessee Titans. Wilson praised Parker's blend of athleticism and motor, comparing his frame to James Pearce Jr. 'He wins with both speed and power, is stout at the point vs. offensive tackles and is a high-motor, high-end athlete,' Wilson wrote. As for Woods, Wilson cited his strength and technique in the trenches. 'Woods plays with leverage, power and a low center of gravity,' he wrote. 'He can toss offensive linemen off-balance and shed blocks quickly to fill gaps.' Wide receiver Antonio Williams was the next Clemson standout off the board, going No. 10 overall to the Miami Dolphins. Wilson acknowledged Williams' occasional drops but praised his ability to separate and contribute across multiple roles. 'He consistently wins off the line vs. physical corners, can get open at all three levels and has legit separation ability,' he wrote. Cornerback Avieon Terrell also made Wilson's first-round cut, going No. 20 to the Minnesota Vikings. 'Avieon plays bigger than his listed size,' Wilson noted, referencing his coverage against Stanford's Elic Ayomanor. 'He has good ball skills and plays run support like a strong safety.' Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik rounded out the group at No. 27 overall to the Los Angeles Rams. 'He's not the biggest QB, but he has a big arm and is one of the best deep-ball passers in this class,' Wilson wrote. 'If he continues to progress, he'll be a first-rounder next April.' The 2026 NFL Draft is still nearly a year away, but if this projection is any indication, Clemson could be one of the most heavily represented programs in the first round.
