Wisconsin starting offensive lineman makes notable preseason watch list
Wisconsin center Jake Renfro made the Rimington Trophy watch list earlier this week. Renfro was one of seven Big Ten centers on the 40-player list, along with Oregon's Iapani Laloulu, Iowa's Logan Jones, Indiana's Pat Coogan, Michigan State's Matt Gulbin, Rutgers' Gus Zilinskas and Ohio State's Carson Hinzman. He will look to join Tyler Biadasz (2019) as the only other Wisconsin Badger to win the award. The veteran center is entering his third year with the Badgers. He transferred to the program from Cincinnati after the 2022 season, following head coach Luke Fickell. After missing most of the 2023 campaign due to injury, the former first-team All-AAC center anchored the Badgers' offensive line in 2024. He is set to do the same in 2025. The biggest threat to that status is the center's health. He is currently considered week-to-week after suffering a lower-body injury during training camp practice on Thursday. While he has not been ruled out for Wisconsin's Week 1 matchup on Aug. 28, his status for that game appears in question. Wisconsin can ill afford another long-term injury along its starting offensive line, especially after projected starting left tackle Kevin Heywood suffered a season-ending knee injury during spring practice. Wisconsin's replacement at blindside tackle is one of the team's biggest questions in training camp. Given health, Renfro should be one of the Big Ten's better centers in 2025. However, with kickoff less than three weeks away, that health is already a question. Wisconsin football starting center considered week-to-week with lower body injury
Wisconsin football center Jake Renfro is considered week-to-week after suffering a lower-body injury during Thursday's practice, according to reports. Despite being helped off the field at UW-Platteville's Pioneer Stadium yesterday, UW officials noted that Renfro did not suffer any structural damage. The Illinois native has not been ruled out of Wisconsin's Aug. 28 opener against Miami (OH) at Camp Randall Stadium. Renfro, who laced up in all 12 of the Badgers' contests during the 2024 slate, enters his third year with the program after spending two seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats from 2020-21. Before missing the entire 2022 season due to injury, the 6-foot-4 center showcased his talents by anchoring a 2021 Cincinnati offensive line that helped the team to a College Football Playoff appearance. In 2024, the graduate student played a significant role for a Wisconsin offensive line that allowed just 13 sacks and 47.0 TFLs. Renfro's 68.9 PFF run blocking grade was also tied for the fifth-highest clip in the conference. Last month, Renfro accompanied cornerback Ricardo Hallman, quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. and head coach Luke Fickell in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the 2025 Big Ten Media Days. The center's leadership and connection with Fickell, whom he spent time with at Cincinnati, positions him as one of the more senior players in UW's locker room ahead of the 2025 campaign. Given starting left tackle Kevin Heywood's preseason injury, Renfro's presence in the offensive line is paramount. The addition of offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, who runs a traditional ground-and-pound scheme, puts more emphasis on a reliable line and a talented set of running backs. Cade Yacamelli, Darrion Dupree and Dilin Jones figure to receive the bulk of the workload in the backfield behind Renfro and company. The center's status is one to monitor as Wisconsin gears up for the regular season later this month. Wisconsin center Jake Renfro listed as week to week after suffering lower-body injury
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Wisconsin center Jake Renfro suffered what school officials described as a lower-body injury in practice, putting his status for the start of the season in question. School officials said Friday that Renfro is considered week to week and hasn't been ruled out for the season opener Aug. 28 against Miami (Ohio). The injury occurred Thursday during the Badgers' preseason camp in Platteville, Wisconsin, about 70 miles from the school's Madison campus. Renfro started all 12 games for Wisconsin last season and allowed only one sack. He was also a starting center on the 2021 Cincinnati team that reached the College Football Playoff. Wisconsin is trying to bounce back after going 5-7 last year, ending a string of 22 consecutive winning seasons.
