Denzel Washington: ‘I'm Not That Interested' in Winning Oscars
Denzel Washington has adopted a post-Oscars mentality after spending decades in the Hollywood machine. The two-time Academy Award winner said during a recent appearance 'Jake's Takes' while promoting his latest film 'Highest 2 Lowest' that awards don't mean that much to him. 'I've been at this a long time, and there's times when I've won, shouldn't have won, didn't win, should have won,' Washington said in the below video. 'Man gives the award, God gives the reward. I'm not that interested in Oscars.' I say, 'Next to the other one,'' he said of his pair of Oscars. 'I'm not bragging. I'm just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, it ain't going to do me a bit of good.' Washington won Best Supporting Actor for 'Glory' in 1990 and Best Actor for 'Training Day' in 2002. He has also been nominated for his work in 'Cry Freedom' (1987), 'Malcolm X' (1992), 'The Hurricane' (1999), 'Flight' (2012), 'Fences' (2016), 'Roman J. Israel, Esq.' (2017), and 'The Tragedy of Macbeth' (2021). He was notably snubbed in 2024 for 'Gladiator II.' Washington's 'Malcolm X' lose has since been deemed by many as one of the biggest Academy snubs of all-time (Al Pacino won the Best Actor award for 'Scent of a Woman' instead in 1993). Washington previously told Esquire that, after losing for 'Malcolm X,' he asked his wife Pauletta Washington to start voting in his place for the Academy Awards. 'I went through a time then when [my wife] Pauletta would watch all the Oscar movies — I told her, I don't care about that,' he said. ''They don't care about me? I don't care. You vote. You watch them. I ain't watching that.' I gave up. I got bitter. My pity party.' Washington has also been outspoken about his 'Gladiator II' and 'American Gangster' auteur Ridley Scott never having won Best Director. 'Ridley is overdue,' Washington told The Hollywood Reporter. 'How can he not have won an Oscar? That doesn't even make sense. I don't believe it, actually.' Washington also told 'BBC Radio 1' that Scott not having an Oscar is proof that the Academy can't do their 'job' recognizing deserving talent. 'Would you tell somebody how can this man not have an Academy Award? Do your job,' he said. 'I mean seriously, though. … Believe me, and I'm not talking out a turn, he doesn't give a…' Washington's frequent collaborator Spike Lee, who directed the actor in both 'Malcolm X' and 'Highest 2 Lowest' among many other films, previously said, 'We don't do our work for awards, which are nice, but it's the work that is going to stand above all awards.' Denzel Washington gives his brutally honest take on Oscars after Gladiator II snub
Denzel Washington doesn't care about those shiny gold trophies. The Fences actor, 70, recently explained why winning an Oscar isn't important to him in his career. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' he said on Jake's Takes while promoting his new film, Highest 2 Lowest. 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won,' Washington added, per the New York Post. 'Man gives the award. God gives the reward.' Despite being nominated nine times and taking home two wins at the award ceremony, Washington noted: 'I'm not that interested in Oscars.' 'People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it,' he said. 'On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Washington won Oscars in 1990 for Glory and in 2002 for Training Day. He was also nominated for his performances in Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, The Hurricane, Flight, Fences, Roman J. Israel, Esq. and The Tragedy of Macbeth. Earlier this year, Washington was snubbed by the Academy for his performance in Gladiator II. He was expected to get into the Best Supporting Actor race, especially after scoring nominations at the 2025 Golden Globes and 2025 Critics Choice Awards. When asked how he felt about the snub in February, Washington sarcastically told the New York Times: 'Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I'm so upset.' 'Listen, I've been around too long. I've got — I don't wanna say other fish to fry, but there's a reality at this age,' he added. 'The beginning of wisdom is understanding. I'm getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that's exciting.' Three months after the Oscars snub, Washington failed to get nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in Othello, which generated controversy for its high ticket costs. Last year, Washington made headlines for saying he plans to retire after his slew of upcoming acting projects, including Black Panther 3. 'I don't know how many more films I'm going to make. Probably not that many,' he said during an interview with Australia's Today show. 'I want to do things I haven't done,' Washington added.

However, the actor places no value on such career milestones, reported Variety. While speaking to Jake's Takes on his Highest 2 Lowest press tour, as quoted by Variety, Washington said no acting decision he makes has to do with winning awards, including the Oscars. Earlier this year, Washington was considered a major Oscar snub after he failed to land a best supporting actor nomination for Gladiator II. I'm happy for all that did, and I'm happy with what I'm doing." Not getting caught up in awards has long been Washington's mantra. His Training Day co-star Ethan Hawke appeared on Max's Who's Talking to Chris Wallace? last year and remembered how Washington leaned over to him when Hawke lost best supporting actor on Oscar night to tell him, "It's better that you didn't win. Losing was better." "You don't want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award's status. That's the way he thinks," Hawke said about Washington's advice in the moment. "That's what I'm talking about, playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power because Denzel has a couple. It didn't elevate who he was," was quoted as saying by Variety.
