Calgary Stampeders in CFL's Week 10: QB Vernon Adams Jr. returns, as do Bombers
Article content Clutch receiver Clark Barnes (ankle) — an underrated player in the passing game — is back practising fully with the offence. Article content And fellow pass-catchers Jalen Philpot (hamstring) and Damien Alford (hamstring) have both been limited participants in sessions. Article content Also limited in practice has been veteran receiver Tevin Jones, another important key to the offensive cog, after he left last week's affair with a hip injury. Article content If any two of the above are unable to return to face the Blue Bombers, the Stamps are likely to return to CFL rookies Daylen Baldwin and Vyshonne Janusas, who caught three and two passes respectively, in their debuts last week. Article content 'Yeah, adversity builds character, and it shows character,' said Adams, when asked about the performance of the two newbies in the nation's capital. 'A lot of these young guys stepped up, and they did what they can do to help the team out. Article content 'And so we've just got to keep taking those steps, little by little. We've got to keep bringing these young guys along with us to make sure they're ready for anything in the future and things like that. Article content Article content Also back practising fully for the Stamps are RB Eno Benjamin (load management), LB Kelechi Anyalebechi (foot) and DB Jackson Sombach (hamstring). Article content 'Yeah, I'd say we had a good chunk of the guys back practising — it looked like — full (Monday),' added Dickenson. 'Now, how do they respond after that? We'll see. Some guys we've held out, as well, that we think can play, but we'll have a better beat on that (throughout the week), and we'll see how they react.' Article content What do the Bombers bring to McMahon? Article content After starting out of the blocks 3-0, the Blue Bombers were stunned twice in three weeks by the upstart Stampeders — 37-16 in the Stampede Bowl, and 41-20 in the rematch in Manitoba. Article content Those losses made up the majority of a three-game skid for the defending West Division champions, which they halted last week in a 40-31 takedown of the visiting Toronto Argonauts (2-6). Article content That victory came without QB Zach Collaros in the lineup, as veteran backup Chris Streveler managed the day with 17-of-21 for 173 yards — despite throwing three INTs — in what was a run-heavy effort by the victors. Article content Article content But Collaros is expected to return to run the show for the Bombers against the Stampeders, with head coach Mike O'Shea telling reporters in Winnipeg the future hall-of-famer is 'trending towards playing.' Article content Remember that the QB was knocked out of the second game against the Stampeders in mid-July on a heavy hit laid on him by defensive lineman Clarence Hicks. Article content Eight-time CFL all-star offensive lineman Stanley Bryant is possible after missing the last few games with an ankle injury. Article content Article content Regardless of who lines up Saturday for the Bombers, the Stamps insist they'll be ready. Article content Not only does Week 10 offer a few more days between games compared to previous weeks, allowing the Red and White a longer rest after their first two-loss run of the schedule, but the extra time off gave them an added day of practice to prepare for the affair. Article content 'We've played Winnipeg twice already,' Dickenson said. 'Not to say that we don't need to do different things and do some things to scheme them, but (the extra day) was more about ourselves and work on ourselves — and not even really about plays. It was about techniques and trying to get better at little, small skills.

Costly win for Calgary Stampeders against Toronto Argos
Toronto Argos quarterback Nick Arbuckle is sacked by Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman Folarin Orimolade in Toronto on June 14, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jon Blacker The good news for the Calgary Stampeders is they're off to a 2-0 start this season. The bad news is the injuries are starting to pile up. Saturday's game against the Argos was a tough one, as receiver Reggie Begelton suffered a knee injury and is on crutches. So is long snapper Aaron Crawford. Linebacker Marquel Lee suffered a bicep injury. Head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson says Saturday's game was a tough one. 'We're definitely going to be down some guys,' said Dickenson. 'We're going to see how it plays out. We still are getting information on everybody, but we won and it came at a cost. It does give us an opportunity for other guys, but definitely some serious injuries, so we're going to have to adjust.' Philpot has his best game in CFL Dickenson admits some of the injured players could be done for the season. But as with anything in sports, it's all about the next man up. Receiver Jalen Philpot certainly stepped up. He had his best statistical game in the CFL, breaking the 100-yard mark in receiving. He says it's going to give him a lot of confidence. 'It's awesome to be able to break that 100-yard mark, especially at the pro level. It's huge,' said the 24-year-old. 'It's kind of a weight off the shoulders, and I definitely wanted it. I'm just thankful that the team put me in situations to make those plays. I know they expect me to make those plays. That's why they brought me in here, so (I'm) just happy to do that.' Roberts learning from roommate Jacob Roberts took over for Lee when he went down with his injury. They're great friends on and off the field and are roommates. Roberts takes advice from Lee and says it's time for him to step up. 'We lost the engine to our defence,' said the 23-year-old. 'But we've got his back and I'm going to step in there. We've got guys like (Micah) Teitz and some younger guys that are coming up getting ready for the game, and we're going to step in. It's a big role, but we're going to fill his shoes.' Jason MacGougan was signed by the Stamps on Tuesday after Crawford was injured. MacGougan was here for training camp and played in both pre-season games for the Stamps. He says he's ready for this opportunity. 'It's unfortunate what happened, especially to a guy that's as good as Crawford is,' said the 22-year-old. 'He's a great guy in the room and just a good person overall. But at the end of the day, it's a contact sport and injuries happen, and it's the next-man-up mentality.' The Stamps' next game is on Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium against the Ottawa Redblacks.
