We will preview every player on the Cardinals roster leading up to training camp. This is about S Jalen Thompson. The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team. Next up is safety Jalen Thompson. Jalen Thompson background, 2024 season Consistently playing in the shadow of safety-mate Budda Baker, Thompson is nonetheless a key component in one of the best tandems in the NFL. Selected in the supplemental draft in 2019 with a fifth-round choice, Thompson has been a consistent producer during his six seasons with the Cardinals. He has started 59 of a possible 68 games over the last four seasons and played a percentage of 91-plus defensive snaps in those years: 91, 99, 95, 98. Last season, Thompson played 15 games and was third on the team with 98 tackles (61 solo with three for loss). He also had two fumble recoveries, three passes defensed and two quarterback hits. Jalen Thompson 2025 contract details, cap hit Thompson's base salary is $7.56 million and his salary-cap charge is $13.7 million. He was paid a $2 million roster bonus in March. 2025 questions, roster outlook There has been speculation throughout the offseason that Thompson might be a roster casualty this year because of his cap figure. However, because his contract includes a void year in 2026, a release at this point would result in $6 million of dead money against the cap this year and another $4 million in 2026. The Cardinals are grooming Dadrion Taylor-Demerson for a larger role, but depth would be severely tested if they would move on from the reliable Thompson prior to the season. His salary is excellent value for the leadership and production he provides. NFL supplemental draft: League not holding event for second straight year
The NFL has decided not to hold a supplemental draft ahead of its 2025 season, according to The Athletic's Dane Brugler. The NFL's decision marks the second consecutive year it decided not to host the offseason event. The supplemental draft was originally created in 1977 to give players who did not enter the main NFL draft but had circumstances affect their college eligibility a chance to play professionally. Teams making selections in the seven-round supplemental draft would sacrifice draft capital from the ensuing year's common draft. For example, if a club chose a player in the fourth round of the supplemental draft, it would surrender its fourth-round pick in the next year's draft. No player has been selected in the NFL's supplemental draft since 2019. The Arizona Cardinals made the lone selection in that event, spending a 2020 fifth-round pick to acquire Washington State safety Jalen Thompson. A total of 46 players have been selected in the supplemental draft during the event's 48-year history. Cris Carter is the lone among the crowd to become a Pro Football Hall of Famer; Bernie Kosar, Brian Bosworth, Jamal Williams, Terrelle Pryor and Josh Gordon comprise some of the other notable supplemental draft selections. It isn't clear whether any players were intending to declare for the 2025 supplemental draft. It also isn't clear the NFL is planning to bring back the supplemental draft in 2026.

NFL will not hold Supplemental Draft in 2025: Sources
The NFL informed teams that for the second consecutive year, there won't be a Supplemental Draft this summer, sources informed on the decision confirmed to The Athletic on Friday. The Supplemental Draft is an option for draft-eligible players who did not declare for the regular NFL Draft for various reasons. In most cases, that's due to a player having unexpected eligibility issues in college (academic or otherwise). Advertisement A player seeking to enter the Supplemental Draft must apply and be approved by the league office for eligibility. If there are players ruled eligible for a Supplemental Draft, then the league will conduct one. The last Supplemental Draft was held in 2023 with two eligible prospects, though neither was selected. A player hasn't been selected in the Supplemental Draft since 2019 — the longest drought since its inception in 1977 — when the Arizona Cardinals selected defensive back Jalen Thompson. In total, 46 players have been selected in the Supplemental Draft. Notable selections include quarterback Bernie Kosar (1985), receiver Cris Carter (1987) and receiver Josh Gordon (2012).
