UAE places human rights as top priority at 2026 Water Conference
8 July 2025 21:39 GENEVA (WAM)The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to human rights - particularly the right to safe drinking water and sanitation - during a high-level discussion panel at the 59th session of the Human Rights a co-host of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, alongside the Republic of Senegal, the UAE emphasised that ensuring equitable access to water is not only a development priority but a fundamental human right central to its national and international Jama Al Musharakh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations and Other International Organisations in Geneva, participated in a discussion panel, which was convened in accordance with Human Rights Council Resolution 57/13, adopted on 10th October session focused on integrating human rights into the preparatory process for the 2026 United Nations Water this regard, Al Musharakh said: 'This important discussion reaffirms the UAE's commitment to advancing human rights to water and sanitation, both locally and globally. We believe empowering people through access to safe water and sanitation is essential to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and building sustainable, inclusive communities.'Al Musharakh underscored the importance of inclusivity in shaping the themes and outcomes of the 2026 further highlighted the UAE's leadership in expanding access to clean water through both national strategies and international development initiatives, including the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, and the UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia), which have provided clean water to over 15 million people in 37 countries around the UAE is championing a transparent, collaborative, and inclusive process that centers human rights, gender equality , and support for marginalised communities across all six proposed interactive dialogues. The country is also actively preparing for the upcoming preparatory meeting convened by the President of the General Assembly in New York on July 9, where the themes of the interactive dialogues will be formally adopted.

UAE reaffirms unwavering commitment to principled humanitarian action at ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment
26 June 2025 15:13 GENEVA (WAM)The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to principled humanitarian action during the 2025 ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment (HAS), which was held at the Palais des Nations in Jama Al Musharakh, UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva, emphasised the importance of upholding the core humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality, and called for a fundamental shift in the humanitarian system from reactive responses to anticipatory action, and stressed the need for 'greater investment in early warning systems and anticipatory financing, particularly for climate-related crises'.Al Musharakh also underscored the critical importance of protecting civilians in conflict zones and ensuring unimpeded humanitarian access, with a specific reference to the situation in said, 'We strongly condemn Israel's continued violations and underline the need to support efforts and endeavors to ensure the immediate, safe, unhindered, and sustainable delivery of aid on a wide scale, through all possible means.'Al Musharakh also participated in a high-level panel titled 'Reimagining the Humanitarian System: Innovative Models to Save Lives, Reduce Suffering, and Promote People's Resilience and Livelihoods'. The panel featured the participation of representatives from key international organisations, including Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at OCHA, and representatives from UNHCR, UNDRR, FAO, WFP, UNICEF, Women for Change South Sudan, and The International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA).In his remarks, Al Musharakh stressed the importance of innovation in humanitarian response. 'Innovation is no longer optional — it is essential,' he stated, calling for improved delivery mechanisms of humanitarian aid aligning with the needs of the impacted populations. He also underscored the need for 'political courage' to drive systemic reform and ensure the humanitarian system remains fit for an ever-evolving 2025 ECOSOC HAS convened global leaders, humanitarian experts, and diplomats to discuss the evolving challenges and various opportunities facing the international humanitarian system. Key themes included innovation, resilience-building, and strengthening multilateral cooperation in the face of growing global crises such as armed conflict, climate change, and forced displacement. The UAE's active participation reflects its ongoing dedication to fostering innovative, collaborative, and principled approaches to humanitarian responses to the world's most pressing crises.
