Independence Day: JI Karachi urges nation to renew its commitment

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan has urged the nation to renew its commitment on Independence Day to building Pakistan on the foundation of Kalema-e-Taiba. He made the appeal on Wednesday while inaugurating Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Park and a newly paved street in Union Council 4 of Nazimabad Town. Earlier, he hoisted the national flag at Hyderi Market alongside members of the market committee and later opened a section of Altaf Ali Barelvi Road and the Dr Pervez Mahmood Green Belt in Liaquatabad. Addressing the gathering in Nazimabad, Monem Zafar Khan stressed the role of education in national progress, citing the JI's Bano Qabil programme, which has trained over 50,000 students despite limited resources. He said the party had restored 72 parks in Karachi over the past two years, including 42 in Nazimabad Town, and renovated 45 government schools, resulting in higher student enrolment. He pointed out that Karachi contributed Rs3,256 billion in taxes to the federal exchequer this year and accounted for 95 percent of Sindh's budget, yet remained plagued by civic problems. He blamed the Pakistan Peoples Party, which has governed the city for 17 years, and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for neglecting Karachi's development, saying no ruling party had genuinely worked for the city, treating it instead as a source of revenue. JI Karachi links school dropouts to corruption in Sindh

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan has blamed widespread corruption and flawed government policies for keeping more than 7.8 million children out of school in Sindh alone, out of a total of 26 million nationwide. Speaking at a book and schoolbag distribution ceremony organized on Thursday by JI's New Karachi Town chapter, Monem Zafar Khan said the public education sector had once produced exceptional individuals such as the late nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. He lamented that the same institutions have now been devastated due to mismanagement and corrupt practices by successive governments and an incompetent administration. He pointed out that despite the Sindh government allocating over Rs613 billion for education, the sector continues to deteriorate. He said the public schooling system had been on a sharp decline for the last two decades, giving rise to an unchecked boom in private schools and creating a wider gap between social classes. Monem Zafar Khan also highlighted the role of vested interests and elite indifference in worsening the situation. He said that it was not just a matter of budget mismanagement, but also a deliberate neglect by those in power that has driven children away from educational institutions. He asserted that JI has remained committed to the cause of education. Despite limited resources, the party had successfully restored over 45 public schools in nine towns of Karachi during the past two years. He announced JI's next target is to upgrade all public schools in these areas and improve student enrolment while also encouraging youth participation in sports for better physical and mental health. The JI leader also participated in the party's 'Make Karachi Green' drive by planting a tree during the event. Reflecting on the significance of the month of August, he called on the nation to honour Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's vision by striving for a future where every child has access to quality and uniform education. He reiterated that education remains the only sustainable path to national progress and revival. New Karachi Town Chairman Muhammad Yousuf and JI leader Tariq Mujtiba also addressed the ceremony. Alkhidmat opens 70th water filtration plant in Karachi

KARACHI: Alkhidmat Karachi has inaugurated its 70th water filtration plant in the megacity under its WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program, marking another step toward providing clean drinking water to underserved communities. The latest facility was opened in Model Colony, an area that now hosts four filtration plants operated by the organisation. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi General Secretary Taufiquddin Siddiqui, District Airport Ameer Muhammad Ashraf, WASH Program Director Gohar-ul-Islam, and other officials. A large number of locals were also present. Speaking on the occasion, Siddiqui praised Alkhidmat's consistent efforts to provide safe and accessible drinking water, highlighting that the organisation has also completed over 1,100 bore projects in underserved neighbourhoods. Mobile water vans are additionally deployed across Karachi to distribute water at public spots, including outside hospitals and government offices. Siddiqui also called for better water conservation practices, particularly the reuse of grey-water from households and mosques for gardening or replenishing groundwater through wells and boreholes. He urged mosque committees and the public to play a proactive role in conserving water. District Ameer Muhammad Ashraf commended the initiative but stressed that the provision of clean water is a fundamental government responsibility. 'While Alkhidmat's service is exemplary, access to clean water, healthcare, and education should be guaranteed by the state,' he said. Gohar-ul-Islam, head of the WASH program, shared insights into the organization's broader water initiatives. He noted that Alkhidmat runs its own water testing laboratory to ensure quality control and said clean water provision remains central to its public health mission. He appealed to philanthropists and donors to support the scaling up of such life-saving projects across Karachi. Alkhidmat's expanding network of water projects continues to serve thousands of families in Karachi, filling critical gaps where municipal supply systems fall short. Pre-launch ceremony of ‘Mera Brand Pakistan' held

KARACHI: The Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) held a pre-launch ceremony on Thursday at a local hotel in Karachi, ahead of its third consecutive mega exhibition titled 'Mera Brand Pakistan', scheduled for January 3 and 4, 2026. Organizers announced that the upcoming event will be the largest of its kind, quadrupling in scale compared to previous editions. Speaking at the ceremony, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief, Monem Zafar Khan linked the initiative to a broader national and humanitarian cause. He described Mera Brand Pakistan as a response to Israel's ongoing brutalities in Gaza, condemning the Zionist regime for using starvation as a weapon of war against innocent civilians. 'You cannot slaughter our women and children with one hand and sell us your products with the other,' Monem Zafar stated, urging a nationwide boycott of Israeli goods and calling on all stakeholders to support locally produced alternatives. Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) President Junaid Naqi echoed the call for strengthening domestic industries. He emphasized the need to enhance the quality and branding of Pakistani products and pledged full support to the Mera Brand Pakistan campaign. 'The nation must unite to prefer 'Made in Pakistan' over imported products, especially those linked to regimes engaged in oppression,' he said. PBF Acting President Amir Rafi shared the journey of the exhibition's growth, noting that the first event was organized within just 21 days in a single hall at the Karachi Expo Centre. The second expanded to two halls, and the upcoming third edition will be four times larger. He expressed gratitude to both exhibitors and the public—particularly Karachi's women—for their enthusiastic response. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
