Raiders need Elandon Roberts to help lead the way at LB

Jamal Adams on what Pete Carroll told him signing to the #Raiders:'He told me, 'You going to be in the linebacker room so get over it.' I said, 'Alright s**t, let's do it.'' The Las Vegas Raiders made sweeping, and we do mean sweeping, changes to the linebacker position this offseason. Linebackers Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo combined to play more than 1,700 snaps for the defense in 2024. Both were allowed to leave the organization this offseason. With new head coach Pete Carroll collaborating with returning DC Patrick Graham, the linebacker spot will look drastically different. GM John Spytek signed no fewer than four veteran linebackers in free agency this offseason. With so much change and projection, the Raiders must count on experienced LB Elandon Roberts to help show the way forward. The Raiders are gambling at linebacker. Jamal Adams is making the transition from safety to linebacker. It's gone swimmingly so far, but there's still an acclimation period. Devin White is a reclamation project after struggling for the Eagles and Texans in 2024. Veteran Germaine Pratt was also signed after a career-worst year in Cincinnati last season. Roberts feels like the surest thing. The 10-year pro played nearly 500 snaps for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. Pro Football Focus assigned him an elite run-stopping grade of 90.4, though he struggled in coverage (50.9). Adams, Pratt, and White feel like unknowns at the position. Meanwhile Roberts has been the definition of consistency in recent seasons with a clearly defined skill set. The Raiders need Roberts to establish himself as the leader in a position room loaded with experience.

Jamal Adams embracing move to weakside linebacker

Jamal Adams was a Pro Bowl safety for Pete Carroll in Seattle, but when Adams signed with Carroll's Raiders in July, the head coach had some news for Adams. "He straight up told me, 'You're going to be in the linebacker room, so get over it,'" Adams said with a laugh, via Levi Edwards of the team website. "So I was just like, 'Alright, shit, let's do it.'" Adams had never been a full-time linebacker, not even in Pop Warner, before joining the Raiders. The transition hasn't been a problem. "Obviously I'm just a football player, man," Adams said. "See ball, get ball." Adams is listed as the backup weakside linebacker to Germaine Pratt, so he is fighting for not only a roster spot but playing time. He played 15 snaps in the preseason opener against the Seahawks. "He's always been so instinctive and so aggressive and such a run-through guy, been a fantastic blitzer over his time," Carroll said. "So, I want to put him in position to do that. He's jumped right into the WILL spot, and that gives us some flexibility that we're going to grow with. He looks really good." Adams has played only 15 games the past three seasons, missing time with a torn labrum, torn quad tendon and a hip injury.

Jamal Adams humbled by long injury recovery 'grateful just to get the call' from Raiders

Four years ago Jamal Adams was at the top of the NFL world. Coming off three straight Pro Bowls and an energetic leader on a tough Seattle defense. Then in the first game of the 2022 season, he suffered a serious injury, one that lingered and threatened to end his career. 'Tore my quad tendon off my kneecap. That's a two and a half year recovery they say," Adams said of his injury. "Mentality wise as a competitor, I was like 'I'm gonna get back in a year, which I did in 2023, but obviously I just couldn't be myself. I couldn't really practice the way I wanted to. But mentally it was definitely draining. Having to sit down when I didn't want to sit down. . . "Man, so many times just driving to the games, knowing that I'm not going to be able to be myself and mentally you check out as a competitor. It's tough because the other team knows that you're kind of beat up or injured and you can't put your best foot forward. Again, I'm just grateful for the opportunity.' Last season, he had fallen to appearing in just a handful of games for two different clubs. And with days until the start of NFL training camps, was still unsigned. A forgotten man. Then his old head coach gave him a call with an offer. Carroll wanted him to join the Raiders. And he wanted him to switch to linebacker. Something Adams may not have been keen on a few years ago. But if it meant a chance to salvage his career, he was absolutely open to it. Just to get a shot to play football again after the rest of the league had given him up for dead. 'Honestly, I'm grateful just to get the call," Adams said of his shot with the Raiders. "Any opportunity that's thrown at me in life, I'm going to take advantage of it. You find out a lot about yourself when your back is against the wall, you know what I mean? For me having to sit down for a whole year to really scan my whole career, scan life, relationships with my family, my friends, so much I had to go through mentally to sharpen my iron. Again, I'm just grateful to be back out there on the grass and to do what I do. It's been a long time coming. You guys got a glimpse of it this past game.' Adams added that he is "definitely back to who I am" and it showed in Thursday night's preseason opener in Seattle. He played about a quarter, making several big tackles and flying to the ball, which made a strong impression on Pete Carroll. And after he left the game, there was no one more excited and having more fun being part of a team than he is. "I'm having a lot more fun than what I was in previous years just due to injuries," Adams continued. it was obvious just how happy he was to be back and feeling good again. He said the long journey was "humbling" and helped him gain perspective. All of which ultimately led to this moment and has him all the more appreciative of it. 'Through life everybody's going to face adversity and opposition," Adams added. "It's gonna come, no matter who you are, no matter how much money you make, it's eventually going to come. You're never prepared for it. It's not how you start, it's how you finish. When you learn through situations of life, it's trial and error. Again, I'm super, super grateful just to be back in the NFL doing what I do."

Pete Carroll plans to play Raiders starters vs Seahawks in preseason debut

The Seattle Seahawks play a football game this week, and it's against none other than Pete Carroll's Las Vegas Raiders. The NFL scheduling wizards are pitting the Seahawks against their former head coach to kick off the preseason at Lumen Field. Although this game is ultimately "meaningless" in the grand scheme of things, it should come to the surprise of absolutely nobody that Carroll is in it to win it. Preseason or not, Carroll obviously wants to defeat his former team, and he's not alone as he has a pair of former Seahawks with him in Geno Smith and Jamal Adams. It's clear this trio wants to claim one more win at Lumen Field, as Carroll has already announced the starters will play in the preseason debut. Seattle's current head coach, Mike Macdonald, has already announced the Seahawks will not be playing their starters. This will surely make for an unusually fascinating preseason opener, as narratives (like mentioned in the tweet above) will surely be flying and the takes will be scorching hot. It will be an interesting opportunity to see how well Seattle has built its depth. With a squad of mainly second and third string players taking the field, we'll get a first glimpse at how well they stack up against starters from an opponent. One of the hallmarks of the Seahawks' success in the early years of the Carroll/Schneider era was how deep the roster was. After an impressive haul in the 2025 NFL draft, Seattle is trying to emulate that success, and we'll get a chance to see how well it's working so far. Raiders starters are suited up for the game Pete Carroll chopping it up with his former players pregame in Seattle Carroll hasn't said for certain whether the Raiders starters will play in the game, saying they will be "live" and "ready to go". Which means they should at very least all suit up. And I would expect at least a few expected starters to take the field. If the Raiders starters do play, they would likely only see one drive. After that, it's all about the depth players and roster hopefuls.
