Raiders thrash Newcastle to continue first place charge

Matthew Timoko has provided the game-defining presence to lead Canberra to a 44-18 win against Newcastle, building a four point buffer over the second-placed Melbourne Storm. With six rounds left before the finals, the Raiders don't have to play any current top four opponents and have a bye in hand. If the Green Machine are able to win the minor premiership, it would be their first since 1990, when coach Ricky Stuart was halfback. However, Canterbury could cut Canberra's two-win lead to one if they beat Manly later on Sunday. The victory at GIO Stadium was the Raiders' ninth on the trot, the first time they have achieved that feat since 1994. Timoko provided the stability, weaving and winding through Newcastle's defence and earning two tries. He also broke through Newcastle's defence three times and ran 138 metres. Savage strikes right before half-time! ⏰ — NRL (@NRL) July 27, 2025 Joe Tapine (139m) led the Raiders up the middle, with Jamal Fogarty providing circling kicks and two try assists. The Knights produced a courageous first half performance with Dane Gagai (16 runs) and Tyson Frizell (145m) creating a see sawing contest. Big names Kayln Ponga, Bradman Best and Fletcher Sharpe were all out, and as the game continued their creative presence was missed as the Knights were unable to break down a solid Canberra defence. Newcastle's season is also now all but over as they sit well adrift of the top eight, tied on 16 points with last-placed South Sydney. Both teams went try-for-try in the first half. Kaeo Weekes strolled over first after Jed Stuart broke free down the left edge and passed to Hudson Young, who laid it off to the Raiders' No.1. The Knights were able to level the scores when Phoenix Crossland drew the Raiders out before passing to Leo Thompson, who provided a short ball to Kai Pearce-Paul. Canberra shrugged off the Knights' try, going on the offensive and finding their second when Simi Sasagi broke free of a Tyson Gamble tackle and crashed over. Newcastle had been sniffing around the Raiders' right edge all game and earned their second try when Gagai found Greg Marzhew, who strolled over untouched. But on the stroke of half time Xavier Savage was able to put Canberra back in front when Timoko broke free on the right edge and found his winger. The second half was a different story, with the Raiders scoring four unanswered tries, including two for Timoko. Substitute Noah Martin was able to score his first NRL try when he pounced on a Jamal Fogarty kick.

Raiders star's crybaby taunt amid ‘grub' antics in win over Warriors

New Zealand Warriors fans were left cursing Joseph Tapine for his antics in Canberra's fiery 16-10 win in Auckland on Sunday. In a clash between two top four teams, there was no shortage of disciplinary errors with referee Adam Gee giving out three sin bins in the game — to Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad of the Warriors and to Canberra's Corey Horsburgh and Tom Starling. A try to Jamal Fogarty in the 62nd minute broke the deadlock and the Raiders survived the dying stages with 12 players to hold on for the win, which broke the Warriors' five-game winning streak and moved Canberra into second on the NRL ladder. Gee had his work cut out as both teams looked to delay the play the ball with plenty of ruck infringements, and Tapine was lucky not to be sin binned in the first half. The Raiders captain gave away a penalty for an illegal crusher tackle on and got a talking to from the referee, but was allowed to stay on the field. Hearing the boos of Warriors fans, Tapine mocked them by giving a crybaby gesture to the crowd, which you can watch in the video above. Late in the game, he assisted a teammate in a tackle and his shoulder made contact with Leka Halasima of the Warriors. Tapine is set to be come under scrutiny from the Match Review Committee and NRL fans couldn't believe he wasn't sin binned during the game. Jamie Wall wrote on X: 'Joseph Tapine putting in one of the all time heel gold performances tonight.' One fan said: 'Why is Tapine playing like this, why is he a grub all of a sudden lmao.' Tapine and hooker Starling face nervous waits after being placed on report. For Tapine, two incidents will come under scrutiny after earning the ire of referee Adam Gee for a crusher tackle on Marata Niukore early on and a shoulder charge on Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in the final five minutes. Tom Starling made matters worse for the Raiders with the game on the line, after he was sin-binned for a high-flying charge at the head of a kicking Chanel Harris-Tavita. Raiders young gun Savelio Tamale could also be seen screaming expletives at the Warriors faithful as the fulltime siren sounded. Despite all this, as well as a first half riddled with ill-discipline, the Raiders did enough to hang on against a desperate Warriors in a frantic final two minutes. The game looked lost to the Raiders early with the Warriors hellbent on joining the Bulldogs atop the NRL ladder, but the green machine would do enough to wrestle back the advantage. Jamal Fogarty's runaway try in the 64th minute coincided with a Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad sin-bin and proved the difference by game's end. Ricky Stuart leapt to the defence of his 'aggressive' Raiders team despite two late brain snaps almost costing them a vital win over the Warriors. Stuart warned the game would be treading a fine line if they were to hand out suspensions in the aftermath of a brutal contest that was impacted by torrential conditions. 'We can't discipline aggression. Our game and our broadcasters promote aggression. We must be real careful that we don't scrutinise aggressive actions in a game that is moulded on pure aggression and passion,' Stuart said. 'I'm not promoting foul play, I'm dead against it. But there were a lot of accidental high shots and that's all part of it, they're penalties, but the match review committee can't go out there and bash players for aggression because we need it in our game to maintain the entertainment.'

Manly miss DCE in shock loss to Eels

Daly Cherry-Evans' value to Manly has been laid bare, with the Sea Eagles succumbing to a shock 30-10 loss to Parramatta without their departing No.7. In a game devoid of both teams' first-choice halfbacks due to State of Origin, it was Manly who missed their playmaker more at CommBank Stadium. Eels debutant Joash Papalii scored a try and set up another, while Parramatta's forwards dominated Manly's middles in the win. Even with their top players on the park Manly are a side of wild extremes, able to beat the NRL's best teams one week before failing to go with cellar-dwellers the next. But in the Sea Eagles' first game without Cherry-Evans since he announced he was leaving the club at season's end, his absence was clearly felt. Iongi zips through💥 #NRLEelsManly — NRL (@NRL) May 23, 2025 With Luke Brooks and Jake Arthur in the halves Manly's attack lacked any real flow or strike, with Cherry-Evans' usual dangerous right edge falling silent. Overlooked NSW star Tom Trbojevic had a hand in two Lehi Hopoate tries down the left edge in the first half, but that constituted all of Manly's scoring as they slipped to ninth on the ladder. Manly barely looked like throwing a punch in the second half, with their best chance coming when Hopoate was pushed out before grounding a ball in the corner. The Sea Eagles have signed Canberra's Jamal Fogarty for next season on a three-year deal worth close to $2.1 million. But it was clear on Friday night that for now they still need the club's most-capped halfback, after the contract drama that has overshadowed the first half of their year. Parramatta, in contrast, still played with great flow without their halfback Mitch Moses. Stand-in halfback Dean Hawkins did an admirable job, putting Jack Williams over for one try when he set up to go deep and instead went short to the forward. Papalii had a debut to dream of, throwing the last pass for a Jordan Samrani pass after coming on for a concussed Will Penisini early. Samrani casually scoring a try behind his head 🤯 #NRLEelsManly — NRL (@NRL) May 23, 2025 The 20-year-old Papalii then scored in the corner on the next set after a Dylan Walker break as the Eels went from 4-0 down to 10-4 up in the blink of an eye. Isaiah Iongi also looked good again at fullback, and put the Eels 12 points up after halftime when he dummied and slid past Luke Brooks to score. J'maine Hopgood also bagged a try for Parramatta in a win that took them off the bottom of the table and set them up to finish the weekend above the loser of Penrith and Newcastle.
