Low-key celebrations mark International Day of the World Indigenous Peoples

Ranchi: The city witnessed mixed scenes on International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples on Saturday. While rallies and cultural processions hit the streets to flaunt cultural heritage, a sombre mood hung heavy over the memorial of Birsa Munda as many observed the day to honour deceased former CM Shibu Soren. In a symbolic tribute, 151 earthen lamps were lit and floral garlands were placed on Birsa Munda's statue, followed by prayers for all tribal martyrs. "This year is different. Instead of dancing and singing, we are pledging to protect the dreams our ancestors had for this land. The vision that created Jharkhand is being overshadowed. Our forests, water, and land are still under threat," said Bablu Munda, president of Kendriya Sarna Samiti. At the site, community leaders voiced concerns over land grabbing despite protective laws, the erosion of traditional practices, and the lack of access to higher education. "We must stand united against those who exploit our resources while our people live in poverty," said Premshahi Munda, a tribal leader. There was a lively atmosphere at Gossner College as the day was celebrated with music and traditional cuisines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Europe Travel Hack That Saves You Hundreds on Trips! Undo Stalls served millet bread, bamboo shoot curry, alongside bead jewellery, handwoven shawls, and bamboo crafts. The beats of mandar and nagara drums set the pace for energetic folk dances, with performers calling their art "a living textbook" of ancestral stories. Visitors browsed wood carvings, paintings, and bamboo lamps, with many saying they were "taking home a piece of history. " However, statewide celebrations were low-key this year following Shibu's death on August 4. Grand celebrations were planned across the districts and were to be held till August 11, but were called off. "This year's celebration was themed on Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures, focusing on tribal self-reliance and cultural pride. It was planned to organise in a grand way, including various performances by artists showcasing Jharkhand's rich cultural heritage. But due to the death of Shibu Soren and ailing health of the education minister Ramdas Soren, the event was called off," said a source in the IPRD department. Chief minister Hemant Soren paid homage to his father and other tribal heroes on the occasion,. "Although Baba is not physically with us, his struggle, his thoughts, and his ideals will always continue to inspire us. He was not only my father but also the soul of Jharkhand, a symbol of struggle, and the most vocal protector of Jal, Jangal, Jameen. The indigenous communities have shown the world the path to living a happy life in harmony with nature. The life philosophy of the indigenous community begins with nature and ends with nature," Soren wrote on X. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Honour Shibu ji with Bharat Ratna, say political leaders

Ranchi: Many political leaders attending the last rites of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch Shibu Soren on Tuesday called for conferring the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, to one of the tribal stalwarts of Indian politics. Leaders across the political spectrum, including both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner and the INDIA bloc parties, echoed similar sentiments. Jharkhand Congress leader and state health minister Irfan Ansari said that conferring Bharat Ratna to Shibu Soren will not only be a true tribute to Jharkhand but to the entire tribal society of the country. "Shibu Soren ji is not just a politician but a revolutionary, a people's hero, who advocated for tribals' rights and dedicated his life to protect their rights over Jal, Jangal and Jameen. Honouring him with the Bharat Ratna will be the truest tribute to his legacy," said Ansari. He appealed to the Centre to confer Soren with the Bharat Ratna, paying floral tribute to the tribal leader. Congress MP from Bihar's Purnia constituency, Pappu Yadav too sought Bharat Ratna for the former chief minister, in recognition to his contributions for the upliftment of tribals. "There has been no tribal leader like Soren in the country's history," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally Undo Meanwhile, Union ministers Annapurna Devi, Jual Oram and Sanjay Seth, who attended Soren's last rites representing the Centre, have not clearly commented on conferring Soren the Bharat Ratna. The Devil Is A Lie...and Is Also In Eggs: Get Into These Mamas And Their Deviled Eggs

The Devil Is A Is Also In Eggs: Get Into These Mamas And Their Deviled Eggs Today, we're gonna see three Black contestants step up to the plate and see if they will have their Black card removed or kept intact as we're testing deviled eggs on 'Food Swap.' Jameen, Stephanie, and Eugenia are in-studio ready to taste each other's deviled eggs and from the looks of it, something tells me these three ladies can throw down. But, as we've seen in previous episodes, looks can be deceiving. Stephanie opened up the competition letting our audiences know and reminding them that Black people are innovative, creative, and have the power to turn something simple into something magical. Now, let's start with Eugenia. So she serves a taco-styled version of a deviled egg. Hmm, unique, different, but intrigued. She has the yolk out, of course, and adds onion, garlic, smoked paprika, mayo, a little bit of mustard, topped with a dorito and french onion. Now, this is a bold move. Let's see what the ladies have to say. Stephanie leads with how 'interesting' it looks, before sharing she doesn't think the yolk has been fully cooked while Jameen says it's 'very different.' Stephanie kept up her shade, ending her sentiments with calling the submission 'raggedy.' Oh honey. That was nasty shade (laughs). They both agreed it's a kid friendly snack (shady boots) but they aren't mad at it. Final score: 12 Next, we have Miss Shady Queen herself, Stephanie. You know I always say, the ones with the most mouths, their food tends to go south but let's see what her opponents have to say. She made her opponents her Sofrito deviled eggs – some dijon mayonnaise, mustard, chopped pickles, onions, and added rosemary for a decorative touch. Okay, let's see. Jameen called Stephanie's submission 'fancy' and a holiday vibe while Eugenia doesn't seem phased nor impressed, especially with the rosemary touch Stephanie added. After their first bites, Jameen tastes the onions but shares how the salt was heavy while Eugenia says the crunch in the egg is 'overpowering' the flavor. Whew, see what happens when you talk too much. Anywho, the final score is in. Final score: 10 Jameen's submission stuck to the original recipe with her deviled eggs having some pickled relish, paprika, mayonnaise, dijon mustard, and salt. It's a nice, simple traditional deviled egg. Stephanie is still in her shady bag pre-judging the deviled egg, calling it 'mushy,' while Eugenia said they look 'appetizing.' First bites are in and Eugenia is rocking with the egg while Stephanie, still grasping at straws with her opinions chile (haha). Verdict is in and Jameen scored at 11. Eugenia takes home the gold and it was a close one between her and Jameen. I'll definitely be going to their cookouts for deviled eggs – Jameen, hit my line girl so I can get one this summer. As for Stephanie, maybe you can make the salad and add some rosemary in it. Anyways, I'm gonna go find Jameen's number but ya'll go ahead and see the shade of it all in the video below.
