Buccaneers' Jamel Dean ends up with new team in PFF's 2019 NFL re-draft

The NFL Draft remains the second-biggest event in the NFL calendar behind the Super Bowl. Like it or not, it remains one of the biggest things fans and media enjoy revisiting to see "what could have been." Pro Football Focus has done a good job this offseason by starting a re-draft series that we have been tracking here on Bucs Wire. In their latest draft, they looked back on, it just so happens to be one of the more impactful ones in recent memory for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise: The 2019 NFL Draft. The Bucs' draft class in 2019 would help set in motion their Super Bowl season the following year. One of the key contributors was cornerback Jamel Dean, but in this universe, he ends up with the division rival Atlanta Falcons. Sikkema talks about Dean, saying, "Dean has quietly been one of the NFL's best cornerbacks since entering the league. Over the past six seasons, he has earned an elite 90.5 PFF coverage grade while forcing 62 incompletions. Dean is easily the most valuable cornerback from this draft class, per PFF's WAR metric — and the fourth-most-valuable cornerback in the NFL since 2019." That last part is crucial to remember for fans and media alike. Dean has been discussed as the odd man out for the team with the new faces in at cornerback, but he has clearly played his role well. Some patience could result in a big payoff when it comes to Dean in 2025.

49ers Could Bolster Secondary With Trade for Bucs Corner

49ers Could Bolster Secondary With Trade for Bucs Corner originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers lost star cornerback Charvarius Ward in free agency to the Indianapolis Colts, so they might be looking for another player to step in and take his place. Advertisement And they could get that player through the trade market. One player who has had some buzz around him this offseason is Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean. The reigning NFC South champions selected a pair of corners in the 2025 NFL Draft, so they could consider turning the page an d trading Dean ... if it's for the right price. The Niners allowed the fifth-least passing yards in the NFL this past season, so they will be hoping they can keep up that level of play in 2025. And trading for a consistent performer like Dean at the cornerback position could be in the team's best interests. The 28-year-old defensive back only played in 12 games this past season due to some knee injuries, but he still had a very solid year. He racked up 59 total tackles, 45 of them being solo, as well as forcing one fumble. He was also able to show his ball-hawk skills with an interception and seven pass deflections. Advertisement The Buccaneers have made the playoffs each of the last five seasons, with the first of those seasons ending in the team's second Super Bowl win ever. But with them drafting more corners in this year's draft, they could consider trading Dean. And if they do, the Niners are one of the teams that could take advantage of that. 49ers Trade Rumored Amid Cornerback's Bizarre Arrest

49ers Trade Rumored Amid Cornerback's Bizarre Arrest originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Francisco 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday after a strange sequence of events reportedly involving Lenoir not giving up keys to a vehicle and refusing to let peace officers conduct a search. Advertisement The investigation is ongoing, so it is unclear whether or not Lenoir, 25, will face any punishment by the NFL or the 49ers. The bizarre incident comes in awful timing as the young defensive back has turned into a reliable piece of the Niners defense. Last season, the former fifth-round draft pick broke out with a career-high 85 tackles, two interceptions, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in 15 games played. Now amid his legal troubles, the 49ers could be forced to pivot to someone else filling the starting lineup. The problem? San Francisco does not have much depth to work with at cornerback. Pro Bowler Charvarius Ward, a starter last season, left for the Indianapolis Colts in free agency. Tre Brown has just 13 starts in four seasons. And Upton Stout is entering his rookie season. The expected starter opposite of Lenoir is Renardo Green, who is entering just Year 2 of his NFL career and has only seven starts to his name. Advertisement Depending on how Lenoir's investigation unfolds, San Fran could be in the market to make a trade for a cornerback. CBS Sports names Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Jamel Dean as a possibility. "Dean's six-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers includes a Super Bowl title and big-money extension, but the veteran has been frequently mentioned as a potential cut or trade candidate due to a $15 million 2025 cap hit, almost all of which the Bucs could clear from their books by dealing Dean elsewhere," Cody Benjamin writes. Dean would become the Niners' most proven cornerback if he is required, and it doesn't seem like a daunting task to do so. San Francisco has the second-most money to spend with over $45 million in cap space and Dean also has no more guaranteed money on his contract. San Francisco could easily find room for Dean financially, but it'd have to come at the price of trading draft capital. Advertisement If we get definitive word on Lenoir's future, this trade becomes a lot more enticing as Dean would fill the void in the starting lineup left by Lenoir's suspension. But if the Niners were to pull the trigger prematurely and Lenoir isn't suspended, the lost draft picks would hurt. However, the duo of Lenoir and Dean together still profiles as a roster upgrade. The 49ers remain at a point where they are good enough to compete for a championship when fully healthy. Defensively, the team would love to have Lenoir return as the secondary is by far the weakest link on this roster. A trade could change that, but in the meantime, we'll have to wait and see what happens following his arrest. High-Priced Buccaneers Cornerback Could be Trade Bait Ahead of 2025

High-Priced Buccaneers Cornerback Could be Trade Bait Ahead of 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Just a day after we wrote about Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean possibly being a cut candidate for the team, he's being named in a suggested trade. Advertisement The reason for him being a potential cut candidate isn't because of declining skills, but two other reasons. He's entering Year 3 of a four-year, $52 million deal and carries a massive $15 million cap hit next year. The Bucs also invested heavily on two corners in Round 2 and Round 3 of the draft this season. It's because all of those factors that he could be either a cut candidate or, even better, on the trade block. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin thinks the Las Vegas Raiders would be interested in acquiring Dean in a trade. 'Dean's six-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers includes a Super Bowl title and big-money extension, but the veteran has been frequently mentioned as a potential cut or trade candidate due to a $15 million 2025 cap hit, almost all of which the Bucs could clear from their books by dealing Dean elsewhere. Even if Dean is more serviceable than special at a lofty price,' Benjamin said. 'The Bucs are trying to defend their NFC South crown, and jettisoning such an experienced corner would put immediate pressure on rookie corners like Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish to have a playoff-caliber impact.' Advertisement Dean is also scheduled for a $15.7 million cap hit in 2026. That's a lot of money for a guy who might be relegated to a backup role at some point. It's a big decision for general manager Jason Licht, and could be dictated by the performance of some of this year's rookie class. Analyst Names Buccaneers Third-Round Pick as Potential Cut Candidate

Analyst Names Buccaneers Third-Round Pick as Potential Cut Candidate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean has been a staple in the secondary since being selected No. 94 overall in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Advertisement But that could be changing soon, per Bleacher Report's Alex Kay. Kay believes Dean could be a cut candidate for the team, and it's not just for financial reasons. "Dean conceded a career-high 69.7 percent completion rate in 2024 and allowed a concerning 66.1 percent completion rate the season prior. Those marks are well above the 54.2 percent completion rate he posted over the first four years of his career, meaning it could be time for Tampa to part ways with the soon-to-be 29-year-old," Kay wrote. While the financial incentives are strong, the Buccaneers also have plenty of reason to move on from Dean after landing two potential replacements in Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish on Day 2 of the 2025 draft. Advertisement "A change of scenery could do Dean well. He's still on the right side of 30 and is just over two years removed from signing a sizable extension commensurate with his contributions. Any team lacking veteran depth should be interested in bringing Dean aboard if the Bucs part ways with the corner." Dean is scheduled for a $15.1 million cap hit in 2025 and $15.7 million in 2026 to end his four-year, $52-million deal. That's a lot of money for a guy who might be relegated to a backup role at some point. It's a big decision for general manager Jason Licht, and could be dictated by the performance of some of this year's rookie class.
