How James McCarthy fell off Celtic radar as teammate offers rare insight into Parkhead woes

It's fair to say that James McCarthy's time at Celtic didn't work out as planned. The lifelong fan became one of Ange Postecoglou's first signings as he was announced on the same day as Joe Hart in 2021 - much to the excitement of fans. McCarthy - who was a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace - put pen to paper on a bumper four-year deal with his boyhood heroes. A popular figure in the dressing room but a bit-part player on the park, McCarthy's Hoops career never really got up and running. The midfielder started just six of his 27 appearances for Celts, with his last outing coming as a sub away to Motherwell in October 2022. After that? He fell off the radar completely and was rarely even spotted at Lennoxtown. In fact, that night at Fir Park was the final time he kicked a ball in his professional career. A sad ending for an outstanding talent who first burst onto the scene at Hamilton Accies before enjoying an impressive career down south - famously winning the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013. Celtic's forgotten man quietly left Parkhead last summer as his profile vanished from the club's official squad page - a year before his contract was due to expire. There was no official statement confirming his departure either, nor was Brendan Rodgers ever asked. The silence baffled fans, and now, former Celts goalie Ben Siegrist has offered a rare insight into McCarthy's circumstances. In a wide-ranging interview with the Bondi Podcast, Siegrist revealed an injury left McCarthy sidelined for months as he said: "He trained and then towards the end of the first year when I was there, he was just training either on the side or with the reserves. "I think he had a really nasty injury just before we went to Australia [during the 2022 World Cup break]. I think he had a really bad hamstring tear. "The last part of his rehab I think was with the reserve team. As a player, you understand that he's frustrated but it's decisions made and you just get with it. "You spoke to him but if somebody tells you that you're not part of the plans, then there's not really anything to argue. "I don't think anyone has ever gone into the office and when the manager said you're not part of the plan, said 'No, I am, I am!'. Nothing's going to change. "Other players were closer to Macca than I was. But the Macca I experienced was bright as a button and always up for fun. "He was a good guy around the dressing room. In my two years at Celtic, there was not one player who was a bad egg." Now 34, McCarthy remains without a club and appears to have hung up his boots after a distinguished playing career. Capped 43 times by Ireland, the playmaker made 446 appearances for Hamilton, Wigan, Everton and Celtic, scoring 27 goals. And he revealed an incident where his dad gave him a fierce talking to after a club game in which he scored a goal. The Ballymun Kickhams man said: "He said 'You were an embarrassment... you were a disgrace today. You actually embarrassed me and your brother. You weren't going for the ball, you weren't tackling. You were swanning around, thought you were great.'" While it led to a temporary falling-out between the two, the five-time All-Star admitted it made him a better player down the line. He added: "I got real thick. Told him to F off. "We didn't talk for a couple months after. But he was dead right. "We had a little bit of that in the first few years but once he felt I was on the right path, probably about 21, he said 'I'll let him off and let him figure it out himself.'" The career James McCarthy forged speaks for itself. He is one of only three Dublin players to win the Sam Maguire nine times, the others being Stephen Cluxton and Michael Fitzsimons. He announced his inter-county retirement in November 2024 with an emotional statement which prompted tributes aplenty. He said: "I have decided to retire from representing Dublin GAA at intercounty level. "This decision hasn't been an easy one to make but I feel it's the right time. "I have been very fortunate to be involved in a golden period for Dublin GAA and I have played with the most incredible group of players. "It really has been some of the best days of my life and I have memories to last a lifetime. "The loyalty and friendship we have built is something I will always be thankful for. "To the Dublin fans thank you for the support of the team throughout the years. "Walking around Croke Park and passing Hill 16 is a memory that I will never forget. "To my parents John and Marian, my family, my close friends, and my wife Clodagh, thank you for supporting me throughout my football career. "Your unwavering belief in me has helped more than you will ever know."

Endumeni resident challenges municipality over pothole damage claim

Glencoe resident James McCarthy is calling for transparency and accountability from the Endumeni Municipality after his R21,000 pothole damage claim was formally denied. The claim relates to two separate incidents on Transmission Lane, where McCarthy says dangerous road conditions have plagued motorists for years. In a detailed letter to the Courier, McCarthy expressed his frustration with how the municipality handled the matter. 'From the beginning, the process was flawed,' he said, alleging delays, miscommunication, and a lack of proper documentation. The municipality reportedly justified the claim rejection by stating that damage could not have occurred at the road's 40km/h speed limit. McCarthy, however, disputes this. 'There is no signage to indicate a 40km/h limit. By national default, urban roads are set at 60km/h unless otherwise stated,' he explained. He added that most drivers travel below 15km/h on Transmission Lane due to its deteriorated state. 'There are at least 15 major potholes – some classified as severity level five. Yet, the municipality refers vaguely to one pothole, claiming it is too shallow to cause damage,' he said. McCarthy has formally requested: Proof of the claimed 40km/h limit Evidence that he exceeded it Documentation showing negligence on his part The full pothole inspection report used in the claim decision He also alleges administrative failure, noting that internal processes were said to be completed by 5 June, but email records show the claim was still being processed on June 13 – the day it expired. Despite a meeting on June 20 where it was reportedly agreed that both his 2023 and 2025 claims would be reviewed, the denial letter did not acknowledge the earlier case. 'We were promised that potholes would be repaired before the end of June. That deadline has passed, and nothing has changed,' McCarthy added. The resident has also raised concerns about missing documents in the insurance process, stating that no signed or complete forms were submitted, and personal details were omitted. 'The system failed us,' he concluded. 'This goes beyond a burst tyre – it's about the integrity of the process.' The Courier contacted the municipality, which stated that the Finance Department is addressing the matter. In another development, McCarthy was later told that the insurer had closed the claim as it falls within the client's excess and was advised to take up the issue directly with the municipality. Wilfried Zaha makes Everton transfer admission after failed £50m bid and club statement

Wilfried Zaha said he was open to joining Everton when the club moved for him back in 2019. Then at Crystal Palace, the winger was the subject of a disputed and protracted series of negotiations that saw the Blues publicly deny some of the reports surrounding their interest. Advertisement They did acknowledge a bid for the former Manchester United player - and he has now revealed the interest went both ways. Then 26, Zaha's future was up in the air six summers ago. Arsenal went into the close season favourites to sign the Ivory Coast international but ended up moving for Lille attacker Nicolas Pepe. Advertisement When reports then surfaced about a second bid of cash and players, the Blues went public to try and close them down, issuing a statement that said: "Everton Football Club categorically denies that a bid has been submitted to Crystal Palace for Wilfried Zaha that included an increased sum plus Cenk Tosun and James McCarthy. Everton and Crystal Palace have a very good relationship. "A bid was made over the weekend which was turned down. Both clubs agreed that was the end of the matter." Zaha, who is now 32 and playing in the US with Charlotte having been loaned there by Galatasaray, was asked about the saga while being interviewed on the Real Spill podcast, explaining he was interested in a move to join Marco Silva at Goodison Park. He said: 'They were in for me and I was open to it, I was open to the move but things didn't work out."
