GWM makes it official: New turbodiesel V6 arriving in 2027
No technical details have been revealed, however, speculation has alleged similar outputs to Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok V6' 184kW/600Nm. Shanhai Cannon, or GWM P500 in South Africa, will be one of the first models to get the new V6 in 2027. Image: GWM Great Wall Motors (GWM) has confirmed the broadening of its current diesel engine portfolio with the introduction of a new V6 unit in 2027. Three models earmarked Announced to Australian media outlets on the sidelines of the Shanghai International Motor Show this past week, the new oil-burner will reportedly displace 3.0-litres and go into service in the Tank 500, 700 and the Shanhai Cannon bakkie known locally as the P500. Surprisingly not earmarked for the Tank 300 or the smaller Poer bakkie, known until now as the P Series and before year-end, as the facelift P300 in South Africa, the V6 will slot-in above GWM's existing 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre engines with substantially more grunt than the latter's 135kW/480Nm. Conversely, the bent-six will be a first for the Tank 500, which currently makes do with a series of petrol engines only, with and without electric assistance in the form of hybrid and plug-in hybrid hardware. ALSO READ: Surprise: GWM debuts new PHEV V8 alongside hardcore Tank 300 'We have already 2.0-litre and 2.4 diesel engines in many countries. These two engines are designed on the same platform but now we are developing the 3.0-litre diesel,' GWM Chairman, Jack Wei, was quoted by as saying. 'The performance of this engine will be even better, with better fuel economy and also lower emissions'. Petrol-only for now Tank 500 will also get the diesel option come 2027. Picture: GWM In a related article, GWM boss for right-hand-drive markets, James Yang, told 'I think we also have some products [we will] wait [before] launching in Australia because some powertrain, especially the high-end SUV, off-road SUV you need the high torque. 'In China or other markets, we have 2.4-litre diesel. Especially in Thailand, for the customer, the driving experience is okay, but I think in Australia we need high torque, the big engine. 'So [for] some products we will wait [for] this engine to launch [before introducing them] in Australia,' he concluded. V8 and now V6 Announced days after debuting its new 4.0-litre plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V8, the V6 is anticipated to produce roughly the same or more power and torque than the 184kW/600Nm made by the 3.0-litre Lion unit in the Ford Ranger and its twin, the Volkswagen Amarok. Tank 700 will add the V6's portfolio currently consisting of the 2.4-litre diesel and the plug-in hybrid 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 in Hi4-T variants. Picture: Tank SUV China At present, GWM's only other V6 engine, the 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol, comes in three outputs: 265kW/500Nm in Tank 500, and the same outputs but with mild-hybrid assistance in the Shanhai Cannon/P500 and China-only Tank 330. In the Tank 700, the V6 is supplemented by a 37.1-kWh battery and electric motor for a plug-in hybrid configuration outputting a combined 385kW/800Nm. Stay tuned For the moment, details are unknown, as is the possibility of the V6 diesel featuring any form of electrification, as the V8 petrol will incorporate. GWM's EV brand could launch hybrids and finally bring out an SUV
Great Wall Motor's Ora brand – which sells just one model in Australia, the GWM Ora electric hatch – has only ever offered battery-electric vehicles (EVs), but it's weighing a change. However, the company isn't looking at straying too far from Ora's mission statement in the process. 'After the studying of how consumers use [EVs], it's mainly daily city driving. And so with that sort of opportunity, the current Ora is kind of where the sweet spot is, and potentially something slightly bigger as well,' GWM International vice president James Yang told Australian media through an interpreter at the recent Shanghai motor show. 'They don't particularly need long range. And so that's where we believe the opportunity is. 'Within BEV we are looking at doing more in this area and in this segment, and in particular improvements for the Good Cat as well as a small SUV, and not only that but potentially even moving into hybrid in the Ora brand.' Ora Ballet Cat Credit: CarExpert An SUV would finally give Ora a direct rival to electric SUVs from brands like BYD, Chery and MG, among others. GWM doesn't offer EVs across any of its other brands, including the namesake brand under which it sells all of its vehicles in Australia. However, it sells plug-in hybrid GWM, Tank and Wey models. The introduction of Ora hybrids wouldn't be the first time in recent history a Chinese EV brand has made plans to offer vehicles that utilise an internal combustion engine. Geely-owned Zeekr, for example, revealed its first hybrid model at last week's Shanghai show. Ora Lightning Cat Travel Edition Credit: CarExpert Other Chinese brands that don't sell traditional combustion-powered vehicles, such as Deepal and Leapmotor, offer extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in addition to EVs, with a petrol engine used as a generator. GWM's Ora brand offers just three models: the Good Cat, sold here as the GWM Ora; the Ballet Cat; and the Lightning Cat. Two of these are small electric hatchbacks, with the Lightning Cat being a mid-size electric sedan. At the Shanghai show, the brand also revealed a 'Travel Edition' of its Lightning Cat, the latest in a flurry of wagon reveals by Chinese brands. Established in 2018, Ora has predominantly sold only electric hatchbacks such as the White Cat and Black Cat, though its debut vehicle was an unusual, high-riding sedan called the iQ. Sar/Ora Mecha Dragon Credit: CarExpert The Cat theme is a reference to quote by former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, who said: 'No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat.' This feline theme also goes hand-in-hand with the styling of Ora vehicles, which have traditionally been, for lack of a better word, cute. The wild Mecha Dragon was planned to be offered under the Ora brand after GWM scrapped plans to establish another brand to sell the full-size electric sports sedan. However, it's unclear just how many were sold, and it no longer appears within the showroom on Ora's Chinese-market website. GWM Ora GT Credit: CarExpert Ora sold 63,272 vehicles globally in 2024, which saw it beat only the more premium Wey brand (54,728 sales) among the marques in GWM's stable. For context, data from EV Volumes shows BYD sold 160,594 examples of its Dolphin alone, just in the Chinese market. The Ora Good Cat, known here as the GWM Ora, hasn't sold as well as Chinese rivals locally. In 2024, GWM delivered 1225 examples of the electric hatchback in Australia. In contrast, BYD shifted 2116 Dolphins and MG delivered 6934 MG 4s. MORE: Everything GWM Ora

Surprise: GWM debuts new PHEV V8 alongside hardcore Tank 300
New V8 won't be exclusive to China and reportedly, not to left-hand-drive-only markets either. GWM's new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 will be limited to certain Tank brand models initially, and have at least one electric motor and battery pack for a plug-in hybrid configuration. Image: GWM In one of the biggest surprises of the Shanghai International Motor Show, Great Wall Motors (GWM) showcased its first-ever V8 engine destined for certain Tank models only. New engine not just for China Unveiled alongside an ultra hardcore off-road version of the Tank 300, called the Hooke Trail after a well-known off-road track in the western region of the People's Republic, the twin-turbo bent-eight displaces 4.0-litres, and will be augmented by an electric motor and battery pack for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configuration. ALSO READ: WATCH: Battle-hardened GWM Tank 300 shows its softer side While no further details were divulged, the powertrain has been mentioned as possibly making its way into export markets regardless of where the respective Tank model is steered from. This, according to GWM executive James Yang, who told Australia's on the sidelines of the engines' unveiling, 'this [V8] is something that is definitely under consideration, and for right-hand-drive markets, it's definitely something we are still considering'. V8 vs Hi4-T and Hi4-Z Once in production, the V8 will complete GWM's augmenting of electric hardware with various cylinder count combustion engines currently consisting of four and six under the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid banners. At present, the former consists of two units; the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol combined with a 37.1-kWh battery pack for a total system out if 300kW/750Nm in the Tank 400, and the V6, which pairs a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol with the same size battery pack for a total of 385kW/800Nm in the Tank 700. GWM/Haval 4.0l Twin-turbo V8 – details to follow😭 — Setshaba Mashigo (@SetshabaMashigo) April 23, 2025 Introduced towards the end of last year in the Chinese-market Tank 500, the Hi4-Z, which has been confirmed for South Africa, uses a dual electric motor setup in combination with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 59-kWh battery pack for a final output of 654kW/1 195Nm. As it stands, speculation has alleged that while the V8 will produce more power and torque than any of the Hi4-T units, its stacking up against the Hi4-Z could yield even more grunt depending on the number of electric motors used. Tank 300 Hooke Trail Equally shrouded in mystery, the exhibited Tank 300 Hooke Trail, which reportedly sported the engine despite no confirmation by GWM, featured a longer bonnet and a series of chassis changes the Baoding-based brand also didn't elaborate on. Tank 300 Hooke Trail will go on-sale later this year in China as the reported first GWM brand product to offer the new plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain. Image: GWM Noticeable though is the live front axle in place of the standard model's independent setup, chunkier alloy wheels wrapped in Cooper all-terrain tyres, different wheel arch extensions, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and reportedly, a significantly strengthened chassis. Set to go on-sale in China within the coming months, expect more details about the Hooke Trail to be known, as well as of the new engine.
