Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 13 Taillon steps up
Right-hander Edwardo Melendez was promoted to Low-A Myrtle Beach from the ACL Cubs. Iowa Cubs The Iowa Cubs tore a hole in the Worcester Red Sox, 1-0. Jameson Taillon turned in a dominating rehab appearance, allowing just two hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Results in rehab appearances don't mean much, but the fact that Taillon threw 84 pitches (51 strikes) does indicate that there is no reason that he shouldn't make his next start in the majors. Keegan Thompson pitched the next 1.2 innings and got the win. Thompson didn't allow any hits, but he did walk two while striking out two. Porter Hodge took over for Thompson and pitched a strong eighth inning, but got into trouble in the ninth with two, one-walks. So Luke Little came into the game with runners on first and second and one out and got a pop out to first and a grounder to second to end the game and get the save. The final line on Hodge was 1.1 innings, allowing no hits but three walks. He struck out three. The only run of this game came when second baseman James Triantos and third baseman Chase Strumpf hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning. Triantos was 1 for 3 with a walk and Strumpf went 1 for 4. Catcher Carlos Pérez was 2 for 4. Iowa only had four hits in this game. Worcester only had two. The only run of the game: Knoxville Smokies The Knoxville Smokies were blasted by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 5-0. Starter Antonio Santos took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits over five innings. One of the three runs was unearned, Santos struck out five and walked three. The Smokies had five hits. Shortstop Jefferson Rojas was 1 for 2 with a double and two walks. South Bend Cubs The South Bend Cubs took down the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins), 12-1. With the win, South Bend moves into a first-place tie with Beloit in the second half. Erian Rodriguez cruised to his sixth win after allowing no runs and just one hit over five innings. Rodriguez struck out nine and walked two. He also hit one batter. Caleb Kilian gave up a run on one hit in one inning in a rehab assignment. He didn't walk nor strike anyone out. Second baseman Drew Bowser hit a three-run triple in the top of the eighth. He also walked with the bases loaded and had a sacrifice fly, giving him five RBI on the night. Bowser went 2 for 3 with the walk. He scored once. Right fielder Rafael Morel was the big bat tonight as he went 4 for 5 with a walk. Morel scored three times and drove in three. First baseman Brian Kalmer was 3 for 5 with a triple and a walk. He scored twice. Catcher Ariel Armas was 2 for 6. An RBI single for Morel. Bowser's triple. Myrtle Beach Pelicans The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were blinded by the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 7-6 in ten innings. Hector Camacho turned in another excellent start, allowing just one run on one hit over five innings. Camacho struck out six, walked one and hit one batter. The Pelicans had a 5-1 lead going to the bottom of the ninth, but Dawson Netz (in his fourth inning of work) and Brayden Spears combined to give up four runs in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extras. After the Pelicans scored once in the top of the inning, Ethan Bell allowed two runs in the bottom of the tenth to take the loss. The final line on Bell was two runs, one earned, on one hit over two-thirds of an inning. Bell walked two and struck out no one. Cubs second-round pick Kane Kepley may be too good for Low-A, as tonight he was 3 for 5 with a triple and a stolen base. Kepley had three RBI and scored once. Kepley is hitting .409 in the first six games of his professional career. Catcher Jairo Diaz doubled twice in a 2 for 4 game. He also walked once and scored once. Left fielder Miguel Olivo was 2 for 4. He scored twice and had one RBI. Kepley shows off his speed with an infield single. And he shows off his speed with a two-run triple.

Cubs Urged to Acquire Division Rival's $5M Starter Amid Rotation Uncertainty
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Just how desperate are the Chicago Cubs for starting pitching right now? A rotation upgrade was one of the most obvious needs the Cubs had at the trade deadline, but the best they could find was the oft-injured Mike Soroka, who only lasted two innings in Chicago before heading back to the injured list. Between Colin Rea, Javier Assad and Jameson Taillon, the Cubs are hoping they can patch together the back half of their rotation before the playoffs arrive. But there may be a chance they could find more reinforcements this month. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - MAY 14: A detailed view of a Chicago Cubs hat in the dugout against the Atlanta Braves in the seventh inning at Truist Park on May 14, 2024 in Atlanta, the waiver deadline looming on Aug. 31, one Cubs writer sees a division rival's starter as an ideal pickup for Chicago -- if he's available. On Tuesday, Lior Lampert of FanSided nudged the Cubs to grab Pittsburgh Pirates starter Andrew Heaney, who is in the middle of a down year even after a hot start, assuming the last-place Pirates put him on waivers. "Hard-throwing rookie Cade Horton's ascension has helped the stabilize their rotation beyond the dynamic one-two punch of All-Star Matthew Boyd and ace Shota Imanaga," Lampert wrote. "However, Heaney could instantly surpass Ben Brown (and Jameson Taillon when healthy) as Chicago's fifth fiddle if the Pirates let him go. "Heaney has gone 5-10 with a 4.99 ERA, 1.319 WHIP and 83 strikeouts across 119 innings of work with the Pirates this year. What the veteran southpaw lacks in swing-and-miss stuff, he makes up for with valuable playoff experience. His efforts in 2023 contributed to the Texas Rangers' improbable World Series victory, which should pique the interest of the championship-contending Cubs." The market for Heaney must have been horrible at the deadline, because there's no reason for the Pirates to keep him around. If he were to hit waivers, the only thing standing between him and the Cubs might be Chicago's record, because every team with a worse record would get first dibs. The ability to put the lefty in a swingman role in the playoffs might be attractive, and paying down the remainder of his $5.25 million salary is of little consequence. Still, the slumping Cubs can't count on a waiver pickup to solve their many problems. More MLB: Yankees Ripped For Keeping Aaron Boone Over 3-Time Manager Of The Year

Cub Tracks' outFoxed
The going is weird. Cub Tracks™ turned pro a long time ago. Cub Tracks™. Where the great ones run AWAY. The Cubs blew the first game of the series, as their bats were still sick. Ryan Brasier, who has been decent at times, looks like one of the walking dead right now as Javier Assad and Jameson Taillon ride recent successful outings toward the Show and they'll need roster room if and when they arrive. The nine-year vet has no minor-league options. I quite enjoyed the long silences Jason Benetti engineered, and Smoltz didn't indulge his sesquipedalian side. The Cubs were looking to atone for, if not avenge, the previous night's ugly loss, and one would suppose that simple dumb luck favored more safely-batted balls from Cub bats on this day, but then how many 0-fers tip the scales, exactly? Inquiring minds want to know. Colin Rea (8-5, 4.23) took the ball for the blue as Andre Pallante (6-8, 4.57) hurled for the red. Rea has been as advertised as a Cub and Pallante has been. The Cubs jumped out to a quick lead on an rbi single [VIDEO] and a 'steal of home' by Kyle Tucker on a bonehead play by the Cardinals. View Link Rea continued to hit his spots and the Cubs got that old-time game up and running, exposing some sloppy defense as they put the pressure on. Michael Busch supplied a big slash, his 22nd [VIDEO]. View Link More runs were coming. Matt Shaw had a busy day with seven total bases [VIDEO], [VIDEO]. A quality start for Rea, quality work from Caleb Thielbar, Taylor Rogers, and Drew Pomeranz. The Cardinals rallied for a run but failed to bury the lead. MLB rumors: Cubs facing new obstacles in trade pursuit of Pirates star
The post MLB rumors: Cubs facing new obstacles in trade pursuit of Pirates star appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Chicago Cubs have been actively pursuing pitching talent, ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Chicago has particularly had their eye on Pittsburgh Pirates starter Mitch Keller. While the Cubs have been talking with Pittsburgh for some time about Keller, those talks appear to be hitting some obstacles. Advertisement 'They continue to purse Pirates starter Mitch Keller, but his price-tag is soaring with Keller yielding a 2.40 ERA in his last five starts, including seven shutout innings against the St. Louis Cardinals,' Bob Nightengale wrote for USA Today. The Cubs are looking for pitching for several reasons. One is that Cubs hurler Jameson Taillon is out hurt, with a calf strain. Another reason is that the team is in first in the National League Central, with a solid chance to make the postseason. The MLB trade deadline is July 31. Cubs, Pirates are two teams going in different directions this year Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images While Chicago is sitting in first, the Pirates are dead last in the NL Central this year. One of the team's bright spots is their pitching staff. The highlights of that staff are Keller and ace Paul Skenes. Advertisement While Skenes is not going to be traded, it appears the Pirates may part ways with Keller. This season, the hurler is having a great year. Keller holds a 3.64 ERA this season, despite posting just three victories so far. The Pirates have done well in recent weeks, after the parting of manager Derek Shelton. Interim manager Don Kelly has the team hovering around .500 since he took over. Pittsburgh also had a six-game winning streak going, before losing on Friday to Seattle. 'Executives wonder if the Pirates will now be reluctant to trade some of their most valuable chips now that the team is performing well under interim manager Don Kelly (26-25), which would further alienate their fanbase,' Nightengale added. The Cubs are in need of some starting pitching. Chicago is just 14th in MLB in team ERA, per league stats. The Cubs hurlers have a 3.82 earned run average collectively. Advertisement Chicago plays Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs are 53-36 on the season. Pittsburgh meanwhile is in Seattle to play the Mariners. Cubs Planning to Show Interest in Every Pitcher Available, Per Insider
Cubs Planning to Show Interest in Every Pitcher Available, Per Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Nearly every report suggests that the Chicago Cubs will be aggressive at the trade deadline. Whether it's due to the team needing to keep Kyle Tucker happy, being in first place with an impressive 54-36 record, or many other factors, the Cubs have every reason to buy right now. Advertisement Chicago has a real opportunity to win a World Series, and if the front office doesn't take advantage of that, it'll be tough to continue allowing them to run the organization. However, another report has indicated that the Cubs will be aggressive at the deadline. Patrick Mooney of The Athletic recently suggested that even before Jameson Taillon went down, Chicago was in the market for a starter. Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer talks to the media after introducing pitcher Shota Imanaga (not pictured) during a press conference at Loews Chicago Krzaczynski-Imagn Images "Even when Taillon was healthy, the Cubs were already planning to inquire about virtually every major-league pitcher who might get traded this month," wrote Mooney. "Jed Hoyer's front office is in a strong position to buy at the trade deadline, largely through an explosive offense, an elite defense and a revamped bullpen that has highlighted the club's creativity." Advertisement It's positive to hear that the Cubs have reached out to many, as they must find a way to get creative at the deadline. With numerous teams in the National and American Leagues playing at a high level, there are expected to be many buyers around the league. That doesn't help teams like the Cubs, but it's also important to note that they arguably have the best farm system in baseball. If the Cubs want to get a deal done, they can realistically outbid many teams around the league. It remains uncertain if Hoyer would be willing to move on from some of those guys, but it's something that everybody has to keep in the back of their minds.
