Our predicted starting XI for Carabao Cup tie

OXFORD United face off against Colchester United in the first match of their Carabao Cup campaign on Tuesday night. Following Saturday's defeat to Portsmouth and ahead of Sunday's league clash against Hull City, expect Gary Rowett to rest most of those who started against Pompey. Here's who we think will be the names featured in Rowett's starting XI. READ ALSO: Key talking points as U's begin season with home defeat GOALKEEPER Expect to see Matt Ingram between the sticks. This will give Jamie Cumming a rest ahead of the weekend after his efforts against Pompey. Ingram's last appearance for the U's was against Swansea City in May. DEFENCE Peter Kioso might make an appearance at right back having not even featured in the matchday squad against Pompey. Colchester could be a good opportunity to give Jack Currie another chance to prove himself after an impressive season on loan at Leyton Orient. The left back came on with just over 20 minutes left against Pompey and showed plenty of promise. Starting him against Colchester gives him another opportunity to impress as he looks to make a case to put himself into the starting XI for the league campaign. Sam Long seems an obvious choice for centre half after not getting minutes on Saturday. Michal Helik appears to be the only other option to play alongside Long, with Elliott Moore going off injured on Saturday and Ciaron Brown still recovering from a knee ligament injury. We expect the midfielder to start in a flat two alongside Will Vaulks, who played the majority of the game on Saturday. We believe Rowett will play a 4-4-2 against Colchester, with Siriki Dembele playing on the left of the midfield four. Dembele came on for the last quarter of the game on Saturday and proved to be a real handful for defenders at times last season. Matt Phillips is our guess for who will be playing on the right side of this midfield. STRIKERS It would make sense for Gatlin O'Donkor to start up front for United alongside Tom Bradshaw, with Mark Harris and Will Lankshear likely to be rested following their starts on Saturday. SUBSTITUTES There is likely to be an opportunity for exciting academy prospect Leo Snowden on the bench. Jamie Cumming and Hidde ter Avest, plus the aforementioned Moore and Leigh will be good reinforcements at the back. Brannagan, Stan Mills, Tyler Goodrham and Lankshear will also likely appear in the squad.

John Mousinho hails impact of Portsmouth debutant Adrian Segecic

Australian Segecic, a summer signing from FC Sydney, struck in the 38th minute of his debut with a sharp follow-up finish after Jamie Cumming saved from Colby Bishop. Mousinho said: 'I thought it was a really good performance for 60 minutes. 'We controlled the game in the first half and I thought we deserved the lead. We created by far the better chances of the game. 'Naturally towards the back end of the game there was a lot of pressure on our goal with the corners and long throws, which we dealt with largely pretty well. 'There were just a couple of mistakes we made which led to a build-up of pressure. 'But overall I'm extremely pleased. We're not going to be the finished article by any means on August 9 but it's something to build on, and a clean sheet as well. 'Segecic was great not just to get the winning goal but his workrate was superb as well. 'His pressing was great and he picked himself up into some very nice pockets at times, so I was really impressed with him on his debut. Oxford head coach Gary Rowett did not blame Cameron Brannagan, whose mistake started the attack that led to Segecic's goal. Rowett said: 'It was one mistake and that was the main factor in the game. 'Other than that Portsmouth edged the game without creating a lot of moments, but one mistake gives them that little bit of impetus to hold on to, and they defended well. 'Michael Helik could maybe have dropped just a little bit deeper when Cammy made that mistake – he wouldn't normally make that pass, but he's been brilliant for us previously and it is what it is, just one mistake, probably a lack of concentration. 'It was a physical encounter. Probably for most of the first half and a little bit of the second half we were a little off it and couldn't quite connect possession together well enough. 'We had some moments but couldn't move quickly enough to not allow them some moments in the final third, and we allowed them to dictate some of those moments. 'There wasn't much football or fluidity in the game, every chance seemed to come from a mistake. 'But I thought the last 20 minutes was exactly what you would hope – there was more of an edge to us and more quality, there were some great balls in the box and more shots. 'We really should punish one of those – of course Nicolas Schmid made a couple of very good saves, and Jamie made one for us in the first half. 'But from that last 20 minutes I thought we deserved something from the game.'

Adrian Segecic scores in winning English Championship debut for Portsmouth

Reigning A-League Golden Boot Adrian Segecic has made an immediate impression for Portsmouth, scoring the only goal in his new club's opening game of the English Championship season. The former Sydney FC star, who shared Golden Boot honours last season with Adelaide United's Archie Goodwin, hit the target on Sunday morning (AEST) in Pompey's 1-0 away win over Oxford United. 'I scored a goal and the team picked up all three points – I couldn't really ask for a better debut than that,' a delighted Segecic told his club's website. Segecic produced a composed finish in the 38th minute when the ball fell for him on the edge of the penalty area after a shot from teammate Colby Bishop had been saved by Oxford goalkeeper Jamie Cumming. 'I thought Colby was going to put the ball in the back of the net, but it fell for me perfectly on my left foot,' he said. 'That's the area where I'm most clinical.' Debut DELIGHT. ✨ — Portsmouth FC (@Pompey) August 9, 2025 Segecic felt 'pretty relaxed' before the game. 'I know that if I work hard when I'm on the pitch, then the rest will take care of itself,' he said. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho was thrilled with Segecic's display. 'I thought Adrian was great,' Mousinho said. 'Not only did he get the winning goal, but the workrate was absolutely superb. The pressing as a number 10 was great and he was able to find those pockets. 'I was impressed with his debut.' Segecic was replaced in stoppage time by another Australian attacker, former Brisbane Roar striker Thomas Waddingham, while Socceroos defender Hayden Matthews was an unused substitute for Pompey. However, while it was good news for Segecic, former A-League prodigy Nestory Irankunda tasted defeat in his official debut for Watford. Irankunda, who moved last month from Bayern Munich to the Hornets, was a second-half substitute in the English Championship club's 1-0 away loss to Charlton Athletic. With the score at 0-0 deep into the contest, 19-year-old Irankunda seemed to be brought down in the penalty area by Charlton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski. However, the referee waved play on, with Charlton soon after securing all three points with a stoppage-time goal from Harvey Knibbs. Meanwhile, Socceroos pair Sam Silvera and Cameron Burgess went head-to-head at Riverside Stadium, and it was former Central Coast Mariners star Silvera that came out on top as part of a Middlesbrough side that beat Burgess' Swansea outfit 1-0. Elsewhere on the opening weekend of the English Championship season, Australian midfielder Massimo Luongo came off the bench in his Millwall side's 2-1 away win over Norwich City, while Socceroos right-back Lewis Miller was also a second-half substitute in his debut for a Blackburn Rovers side that suffered a 1-0 away loss to West Bromwich Albion.
