Peoria County Sheriff looks to public for help in solving a cold homicide case

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Peoria County Sheriff is asking for help in an unsolved homicide from 2016. The investigation began on June 12, 2017, after deputies recovered a skull that washed up on the shore of the Illinois River in Kingston Mines. The skull's DNA matched the DNA of a torso that was recovered from the Illinois River on Nov. 12, 2016, in Schuyler County, according to a post on the sheriff's Facebook page. Since obtaining this information, the skull and torso were sent to two separate forensic anthropologists, at the University of Illinois and the University of New Hampshire, which were both able to process the remains in attempts to help identify the unknown man. Deputies worked with the DNA Doe Project , and they were able to give detectives a strong candidate through forensic genealogy. After using dental records from Hawaii, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood was able to identify the man as John Frisch, who had never been reported as missing. Frisch had used addresses in both Peoria and Hawaii throughout his life. Harwood determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, and he was dismembered after death. Frisch's parents are dead, and he had very limited family in the area. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
