Three people killed after a small airplane crashed off California coast
Three people were killed – and their bodies have been recovered – after a small airplane crashed in the ocean off the central California coast, authorities and local media said. Emergency crews responded late on Saturday after reports of a plane down about 300 yards (275 meters) off Point Pinos in Monterey county, the US Coast Guard said in a statement on Sunday. The coast guard later told California's KSBW news station that it recovered the bodies of three local residents who had been on the downed plane. They were identified as Steve Clatterbuck, 60, of Salinas; James Vincent, 36, of Monterey; and Jamie Tabscott, 44, of Monterey. Witnesses reported hearing an aircraft engine revving and a splash in the water, KSBW reported. People on shore reported seeing debris wash up from the crashed plane. Clatterbuck, Vincent and Tabscott were all on the twin-engine Beech 95-B55 Baron when it took off from the San Carlos airport at 10.11pm local time and was last seen at 10.37pm near Monterey, according to flight tracking data from Coast guard boat and helicopter crews were launched to search for the crash victims, with assistance from local law enforcement and fire agencies. Three people aboard a small airplane were killed over the weekend when the aircraft crashed in the Pacific Ocean off the central California coast, authorities said. Emergency crews responded just before 11 p.m. Saturday to reports of a twin-engine Beechcraft carrying three people that went down about 300 yards off Point Pinos in Monterey County, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office Coroner Unit identified the occupants as Steve Eugene Clatterbuck, 60, of Salinas, James Vincent, 36, of Monterey, and Jamie Lee Tabscott, 44, of Monterey. The Beechcraft B-95-B55 aircraft had taken off from the San Carlos airport at 10:11 p.m. and was last seen at 10:36 p.m. near Monterey, according to flight tracking data from A witness told AIO Filmz that he heard the plane circling at a low altitude for about 30 seconds before hearing a "thump." Video footage from the scene shows debris from the aircraft scattered along the shoreline. Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews, local law enforcement and fire agencies launched a search for the victims. The operation lasted for a combined 13 hours, covering 346 miles of trackline over an area of approximately 100 square miles, USCG said. A fire boat crew recovered the first body just after 3 a.m. Sunday. Divers found the two other victims inside the fuselage of the aircraft between 6:30 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the victims' families have asked for privacy during this time. "The family and friends of the deceased have expressed that they wish to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community," the sheriff's office said.

July 27 (UPI) -- U.S. Coast Guardsmen on Sunday recovered three bodies from the Pacific Ocean after a small plane crashed off the California coast the night prior. The twin-engine Beechcraft airplane with three people on board crashed at about 10:55 p.m. PDT Saturday between 200 and 300 yards off of Point Pinos, Monterey, Calif. It had departed from San Carlos Airport on the San Francisco Bay. A search-and-rescue operation was launched involving local and state law enforcement assets and Coast Guard boats and helicopters, resulting in the body of one occupant being recovered at about 3 a.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard said in a statement. The plane's fuselage was then located shortly before 6 a.m. by a Cal Fire drone, with U.S. Coast Guardsmen recovering the bodies of the two remaining occupants of the plane at 6:31 a.m and 9:08 a.m. The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search later Sunday. The operation lasted a combined 13 hours with 346 miles of trackline searched over a search area of about 100 square miles, it said.
