Oman set to be premier destination for thrill seekers
Muscat – Oman is setting its sights on becoming the Middle East's premier adventure tourism destination, leveraging its rugged landscapes and natural wonders to offer world-class experiences. Omran Group has initiated an expression of interest (EOI) process, inviting experienced companies to develop eco-conscious attractions at key sites, including Majlis al Jinn, Wadi Shab and Ras al Shajar Nature Reserve. Majlis al Jinn, one of the world's largest cave chambers, is at the heart of these plans. Proposed developments include an auto belay or fan descent jump system for a controlled 150m drop into the cave. Two glass bridges will span its entrance, allowing visitors to engage in a daring walk 42m above ground with panoramic views. The site will also feature bungee and sky jumping platforms, as well as automated ascent and descent systems to transport small groups safely. Additionally, projection mapping will showcase the cave's geological history, and an interactive experience will be designed for younger visitors. Wadi Shab At Wadi Shab, known for its deep canyons and clear pools, adventure activities will enhance the visitor experience. A 350m zip line will provide a high-speed ride across the gorge, while a 500m via ferrata climbing route will offer a challenging ascent with built-in safety features. Plans also include a 120m gorge swing spanning 200m between cliffs, new hiking trails, cliff-jumping platforms at various heights, and scenic bridges and walkways to enrich the adventure experience. Ras al Shajar Nature Reserve will combine adventure with conservation. A 41m high sky tower viewing platform will offer panoramic views of the reserve, while an interactive indoor centre spread over 250sqm will educate visitors on environmental preservation through engaging exhibits. Omran Group is actively seeking partnerships with companies that have proven expertise in adventure tourism development. The EOI process includes planning and design services for the Janaen project in Salalah, requiring comprehensive master planning and detailed designs. As part of its broader agritourism strategy, Omran's joint venture Agritourism Development Company (Janaen) plans to expand the Rummana agritourism initiative to Iteen in Salalah. Janaen has signed a usufruct contract for a 2,000sqm agricultural plot that will serve as a nursery for local and non-local seedlings, with agritourism services also planned for the site. Through these groundbreaking projects, Oman aims to captivate thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts from across the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, offering unforgettable experiences that harmoniously blend natural beauty with exhilarating adventure.
