CBFC Asks for Name Change in 'Janaki v/s State of Kerala' Citing Religious Significance
Film Janaki is another name for Sita, a Hindu goddess who holds religious significance for the community. Poster of the film Janaki v/s State of Kerala. New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suresh Gopi-starrer film JSK – Janaki v State of Kerala, which had earlier been asked to make 96 cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), will now be released on the condition of modifying the name Janaki. Janaki is another name for Sita, a Hindu goddess who holds religious significance for the community. While the makers had earlier been asked to make significant changes in the film, CBFC later told the Kerala high court that it would be willing to certify the film if the makers changed the name Janaki to 'Janaki V.' or 'V. Janaki'. Additionally, the board said that the name would have to be muted in two scenes where the rape survivor [Janaki] is being "aggressively" cross-examined by a lawyer from another religious community, LiveLaw reported. The filmmakers had earlier objected to the board's suggestions, arguing that promotional material for the film had already been released with the original name. The court too had orally noted that naming a character in the film was the artist's prerogative. However, the court then asked the filmmakers if it would be financially viable for the team to contest the CBFC's decision legally. The makers then agreed to move forward with the modifications. CBFC told the court that they would certify the film within three days of the requested changes being submitted to it. Justice N. Nagaresh noted the submissions made by both parties and and directed the film certification body to issue a censor certificate within three days, the report said. The matter will be heard next week for compliance. The production team of the film had moved the Kerala high court alleging financial losses due to the delay in the film's certification and that it was a violation of their rights under Article 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution. The team had submitted the film for certification through the e-cinemapramaan portal on June 12 and the censor screening of the movie was completed a week later.
