Congress and BJP locked in copycat campaign clash, cadres worried
Bengaluru: Cadres of both governing Congress and opposition BJP in Karnataka are in a quandary as their parties are increasingly mirroring each other in political messaging. From OBC welfare to farmers' rights, both parties are deploying similar strategies in what is now being seen as a 'battle of borrowed themes'. On Wednesday, Congress organised a national OBC convention in Bengaluru, pushing for inclusion of data on social and educational backwardness in the upcoming nationwide caste census. The party also passed a resolution urging the Centre to lift the 50% cap on reservation. In April, BJP-led Centre announced a nationwide caste census — set to begin in Oct in northeastern states and March 2026 elsewhere — and launched an awareness drive on its benefits for OBCs, including in Karnataka. From price rise protests to campaigns for farmers and constitutional protection, both parties appear to be shadowing each other in tone and tactics. Just a day before Congress' convention, chief minister Siddaramaiah announced the scrapping of a govt notification to acquire 1,777 acres near Devanahalli for an aerospace park — an issue raised by protesting farmers. This strategy convergence has frustrated party workers on both sides, who worry that their outreach campaigns are becoming indistinguishable from the opposition's. The result: A fresh round of allegations over who is copying whom. "The way Congress is structuring its programmes to reach out to people shows a bankruptcy of ideas," said N Ravikumar, BJP chief whip in the legislative council. "Since it has nothing new to present before people, it is mirroring our initiatives. For instance, their OBC campaign comes after the Centre announced the caste census. We are attacking Congress for posing a threat to the Constitution by imposing an Emergency on the country, but they are responding to it by launching a campaign on saving the Constitution. And it is ridiculous that the Congress held public rallies on price rise after BJP held a series of Janakrosha Yatre rallies as the state govt has hiked prices of as many as 52 items including milk and alcohol." But senior Congress functionaries insist that their strategies are rooted in conviction, not imitation. "It may look like the two parties are echoing each other on issues related to people's problems but Congress has a completely different approach," said KPCC vice-president BL Shankar. "We are genuinely committed to issues such as upholding social justice. BJP has no moral right to talk about caste census and welfare of OBCs. It had categorically stated that it opposes caste census, while RSS functionaries had even insisted on scrapping reservation of OBCs." Congress chief whip in the legislative council Saleem Ahmed added, "People have noticed that BJP was forced to announce caste census only after our leader Rahul Gandhi insisted on it. We pioneered a caste census in Karnataka and Telangana. It is BJP which is copying us. The difference is their moves are pretentiousness, while Congress is genuinely committed to the cause."

BJP-JDS conspiring to topple Cong govt in Karnataka: alleges Dy CM
Bengaluru, Apr 28 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar on Monday accused the BJP and the JDS of allegedly conspiring to overthrow the Congress government in the state but asserted that their attempts would not succeed. "The BJP and the JD(S) are trying to topple the Congress government in Karnataka, but Congress will return to power in the 2028 Assembly election," Shivakumar told reporters. Highlighting the government's achievements, he said the administration had presented a budget exceeding Rs 4 lakh crore and was working with the motto of "equal rights and equal life for all." The Deputy CM criticised the BJP and JD(S) for their "jealousy" and questioned their contributions to the welfare of women, farmers, youth, and job creation. The remarks come close on the heels of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge alleging that the BJP was attempting to destabilise the Karnataka government through backdoor methods and cautioning Congress leaders to remain united. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah refuted BJP's claims that the state's treasury had been emptied due to the guarantee schemes, pointing to the inauguration and foundation-laying of projects worth over ₹1,000 crore on Sunday as evidence of financial stability. "There is no truth in BJP's allegations. If the treasury was empty, how could we undertake projects of this scale?" Siddaramaiah asked, addressing a separate gathering. The Chief Minister also dismissed the BJP's 'Janakrosha Yatre' campaign against the Congress government as "baseless" and "full of lies," accusing the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being responsible for the steep rise in prices of essential commodities over the past eleven years. He asserted that the Congress government in Karnataka, unlike the BJP at the Centre, was committed to developmental works and welfare schemes, and accused the BJP of habitually using "backdoor" methods to come to power without public support. The Karnataka BJP's 'Janakrosha Yatre' has been aimed at highlighting alleged price rise, Muslim appeasement, and misappropriation of funds meant for Dalit welfare under the Congress government. The BJP is spreading lies," he alleged, addressing a gathering. Dubbing the BJP's 'Janakrosha Yatre' as "baseless" and "full of lies," Siddaramaiah claimed the BJP-led government at the Centre has raised the prices of essential commodities over the last eleven years. "Despite crude oil prices coming down in the international market, the Centre has raised the prices of gas, petrol, and diesel. The central government and PM Narendra Modi are responsible for the price rise in the country. Meanwhile, the Congress government led by me in the state has not only implemented developmental works but also guaranteed schemes," he claimed. The Karnataka BJP is holding the 'Janakrosha Yatre,' a statewide campaign against the Congress government in the state, over the hike in the price of essential commodities, alleged Muslim appeasement, and the alleged diversion of funds meant for Dalit welfare. The CM claimed that the BJP has always come to power through backdoor methods, without the support of the people.

My expulsion has affected BJP, says Yatnal
'My suspension has affected the State BJP. Its Janakrosha Yatre against the Congress government are not attracting the crowds,' suspended party MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal said in Vijayapura on Tuesday. He was responding to party State unit president B.Y. Vijayendra's claim that Mr. Yatnal's suspension from the BJP has helped it organise itself better, though it may not have benefited from it. 'Mr. Vijayendra does not want to admit it, but my suspension has negatively impacted the party's prospects. The Janakrosha Yatre in Vijayapura did not attract a large crowd. There were very few people in the protest venue when Mr. Vijayendra began speaking. Party MP Basavaraj Bommai did not attend the protest rally in Haveri. Similar was the situation in Davangere. The rally supposed to be a protest against the Congress government is in reality a movement to save Mr. Vijayendra's chair as the State party president,' Mr. Yatnal said. He said that he has written a letter to the Chief Minister and the Police Department to place strict conditions to allow a protest by some Muslim organisations against him in Vijayapura, planned for April 28. The protest has been announced by a forum against the alleged insults to Prophet Mohammad by Mr. Yatnal. Mr. Yatnal has clarified that he wrongly said Mohammad when he wanted to comment about Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He has repeatedly refused to apologise. 'Every one has a right to protest peacefully in a democracy. But the protests must be peaceful and non-violent. If the protest turns violent, then the State government should arrest the protestors. If it causes loss to property of Hindus, then the government should recover the loss from the leaders of the protests. I have asked the State government to obtain bonds of good behaviour by the organisers after depositing money in police stations. If the protestors damage property or injure anyone, then I will organise a Hindutva rally in Vijayapura to counter it later,' Mr. Yatnal said. Mr. Yatnal denied as false and baseless allegations by some local Muslim leaders that he had committed gross irregularities in setting up a Goshala in the Siddeshwar Trust in Vijayapura. 'The trust members have decided to file defamation cases against all those leaders who have made the allegations. We are issuing notices to them to apologise. If they do not do so, then I will press charges,' Mr. Yatnal said.
